in a millisecond...
I’d do that deal in a millisecond. You always always always take the established guy over the guys who haven’t done it yet. Everyone is so enamored with young players, and I am too, but it’s not like Howard is old and the dude is a monster. He’s money in the bank. Take that deal and don’t worry about if the young pitchers pan out or not, you’ll have the best player in the trade.
You can make that trade.
Its certainly not gonna kill you. I wouldn’t do it, though. Those three prospects are all on the verge of helping you.

I'd Take It
My first inclination is not to — but you can’t go through the season with Ortiz at 1st. And you have enough depth at SP to handle it. I’d definitely do it.
Pretty easy
Always take the established guy isn’t necessarily a rule, but in the case of Ryan Howard it is. Trading prospects (and none of those you are trading are potential world-beaters in my opinion) for a slugger like Howard is something you do every day when you have depth in your farm system.
you should be in win now mode
Considering your roster and like other people say, the prospects you would give up aren’t deal breakers so you should do it.
"I have seen the future and his name is Matt Wieters." Keith Law
Unfortunately, this guy pulled off a different deal trading Howard
He got John Danks, Casey Crosby, Kyle Drabek, James Loney, and Hak-Ju Lee for Howard.
He wanted Chris Carter, Martin Perez, Jenrry Mejia, Jhoulys Chacin, and Danny Espinosa from me.
So it looks like I’ll be keeping my minor leaguers. Sucks, but I think he wanted to much from me in the end.
that is too much
guys with Howard’s profile don’t tend to age well either. i don’t think.
baseball rules.
prolly true
You can’t sacrifice your future for a 1bagger, even if it is ryan howard. Martin perez could be a top 5 prospect this time next year and chris carter could be a good .280 20hr 90rbi guy as a floor. more power maybe less average. But he is pretty safe. So I think you made the right decision holding off. Though I voted yes you should do the deal, but that was before I knew he wanted chacin and espinosa as well. Too much.
I'm the guy who acquired Howard
I gave up a ton for him but I’m also pretty deep in talent… with adding Howard to my lineup I have the following…
Wieters, Howard, Weeks, Longoria, Andrus, Ellsbury, BJ Upton, Justin Upton, Headley, Posada, Prado, Damon, Pierre, Andy LaRoche
Haren, Josh Johnson, Billingsley, Liriano, Buerhle, Matsuzaka, Bonderman, Stauffer, Villanueva, Mijares, Kuo
LaPorta, Westmoreland, DeWitt, Rizzo, EY Jr., Dukes, Michael Saunders, Casey Kelly, Drew Storen, Lynn, Andy Oliver, Yu Darvish, Zach Stewart
And also 7 of the top 40 overall picks in next years Minor League Draft
Can you win in the next few years?
If you have a shot at winning it all, you always make your team better by dealing prospects, even if you over pay. There will always be new prospects. If you can’t win over Howards probable useful life, why bother?
