Gave up Leadoff HR in 1st inning, then retired next 14 Batters.

Maybe he should have started for the White Sox tonight instead of Peavy!

Tony butler

Would be nice to see a bounce back season from him. When he came over with Tillman a lot of people thought had more potential.

He told me he’s been topping out at 91, which is a good sign (still regaining arm strength after surgery).

quick blurb

First round grade draft prospect after sophomore year of college, had a pretty crappy junior year and his stock dropped a bit. Throws hard for a LHP, potential plus change, mediocre control, breaking ball is poor. Probably a reliever, but has the potential to be a good one. Don’t think he’s more than a back of rotation starter despite his plus fastball, needs to make too many leaps to be more than that as a starter.

by mrkupe on Apr 12, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Breaking ball

It should be noted that prior to his junior year, he had a plus curve ball. It mysteriously went away during his junior season. Finding that pitch again will be the key factor in determining his role.

by Jeff Reese on Apr 12, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, I know

But even getting that back wouldn’t guarantee him a future as a starter. He’ll need to bring along his command, which is below-average. I’m pretty skeptical that the breaking ball will show up again with any consistency, in any case . . .if anything, college pitchers struggle with their breaking balls transitioning from college to the pros due to the way the ball is constructed.

I’m heading to Frisco tonight to watch Martin pitch tonight. I’ll let you guys know if anyone else catches my attention.

You may get lucky and see Scheppers and/or Walden come in for relief. Wouldn’t mind hearing any thoughts on Marcus Lemon either.

Re:

That’s probably right. I didn’t pay too much attention to him but he was impressive in his own right. I’d feel safe in saying that he didn’t throw as many offspeed pitches as Perez. Everytime I looked at the gun after one of his pitches, it was 92 or 93…

skaggs vs. kelly

I really liked Kelly, but as a pen arm. Didn’t realize the Cards would start him. Can a Cards fan let me know if this is permanent, or more of a “work” (get all your pitches in sync) type situation?

Solid start for both

Skaggs: 5 ip, 3 h, 3bb, 1 r (solo home run), 3 K’s, WP, 6:3 GO/FO.

Kelly: 5 ip, 1 h, 2 K’s, 7:5 GO/FO.

Everything seems to indicate that he’s shown a very good feel for 2nd base and will definately stay there unless he proves he really can’t handle the position. There will be some growing pains I’m sure, but all reports have been positive (definately moreso than the Trevor Crowe experiment).

by JP_Frost on Apr 12, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

if he can stick, I could see him putting up VERY solid numbers there

Ackley-lite?, or am I being too generous?

Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson

by gore51 on Apr 12, 2010 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s funny you should say that, as he compares favorably to Ackley in terms of college numbers. However, Ackley’s tools get better reviews, so it might be too generous to really compare the two, but if Kipnis sticks at 2nd, he’s definately a top 100 prospect.

I could see him as a consistent .800+ OPS player offensively, which is obviously well above-average for 2nd base.

Not bad for a full season debut. I know some scouts thought his stuff would improve when he became a full-time pitcher, and I’ve also heard he still has some projection left in him. I’d love to hear how his stuff looked tonight.

Steve Pearce

2-4 with a HR today. He’s been hot so far…in 25 plate appearances, he has a .476 avg, .560 obp, .905 slg. 4 walks, 4 Ks. He was a decent hitting prospect a few years ago, and last year showed signs of life in AAA at least, with a .286/.372/.502 line in 317 PA. He struggled in his major league action, but I don’t think the jury is totally out on him.

I'm still not sure what makes Clement the better player

A Clement/Pearce platoon may be somewhat competent at first base.

by Jeff Reese on Apr 12, 2010 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm guessing

it’s because Clement was a big piece in the Snell/Wilson trade so he gets more rope and Pearce has to play the role of good organizational guy.

by gatling on Apr 13, 2010 7:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I should add

I say that as someone who actually likes what Huntington is doing there in Pittsburgh, but I do think sometimes you have to cater a bit to the less knowledgeable fans who know Clement was a big piece of that trade. I do agree though, I think a platoon could work out fine. I know Clement isn’t able to catch full time, but couldn’t he handle it once a week if you wanted to keep his bat in the lineup?

by gatling on Apr 13, 2010 7:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Clement's knees are shot from what I've heard

He wants to catch, but the Pirates won’t let him. I would give him a shot at catching because I don’t see his bat playing at 1B.

adjusting well to AA

a day after going 2 for 3.. 1 double 1 walk and a steal…

he goes 4 for 4 today with 3 doubles

now hitting .462 and has only struck out 1 time in his 14 PA…

also outfielder jerry sands (dodgers sleeper)… goes 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and is now hitting .474 in 19 at bats with 4 walks and 2 Ks … 2 Hrs and 2 doubles… watch out for this guy.!

Cubs

As noted, Raley had a good outing. Very pleased. Not sure what I’m expecting this year, but the Cubs obviously have some expectations to start him at High A.

Brett Jackson – 2/4, 1 RBI, 1 BB. Slow start with the bat but the 4:6 K/BB is nice to see.
DJ LeMahieu – 2/5, 1 RBI.

Vitters/Burke with 0/5 nights. Vitters CS/E.

Hak-ju Lee had the night off in Peoria, so Watkins played short.

Logan Watkins – 3/4, K.
Nick Struck: 4 ip, 6 h (1 HR), 1 bb, 1 WP, 4:4 GO/FO, 3 K’s, 3 runs (2 unearned)

Craig Muschko (slow start, settled down): 6 ip, 3, h, 2 bb, 4K’s, 2 R (2 run shot in the first), 6:8 GO/FO, 75 pitches, 61 K’s.
Starlin Castro: 2/4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 E.

Very encouraging for Jackson

on the plate discipline. I like him a good bit, Burke too. Hopefully he gets it in gear in Daytona this year.

http://bullpenbanter.com

by gatling on Apr 13, 2010 8:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Seems like the Cubs just can't hit

to start the year. The majority of key/intriguing positional players are struggling a bit. A sign of problems to come? Here’s hoping not.

I do really like the fact that the Cubs have kept Brett in the leadoff role. Long run, he’s probably not a leadoff hitter, particularly when you factor in some other options in the system. That said, I like him leading off for now, as it might get him to learn some discipline and patience, and not overswing.

Still .. BB/K is nice so far … but he’s got to keep it up … and he’s gotta hit … and with power at some point, otherwise all my late love for him will have been a bit ridiculous

by toonsterwu on Apr 13, 2010 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Putting him in the leadoff spot is a good idea to get him to see some pitches and work on that plate discipline. Maybe they should try that with Vitters, lol? I do think that Jackson will flash some power at some point, though I’m not sure he’s going to be in that 20-25 HR range I remember you mentioning during the CPL. I’m guessing 15-18 HR, which for a CF with above average D is more than enough.

http://bullpenbanter.com

by gatling on Apr 13, 2010 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

i actually don't know what to expect

the 25., i believe, was a projection that the Cubs gave him (I think Oneri Fleita gave an interview). I believe 20 HR power was a possibility that a lot of folks gave him. BA gave him the same power grade as Vitters.

I mean … I look at his body, and if he gets a bit more selective on his swings, I can envision 20 HR power.

by toonsterwu on Apr 13, 2010 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn't BA say 70 power?

In 210 AB last year, he also hit 8 HR – a 20 HR rate.
