4/10 MiLB
First weekend of minor league action. Didn't have any great poll idea yet. If someone has one, let me know.

Possible poll question
Lindblom’s future role in LA?
1) Next in line closer after Broxton
2) Late inning setup guy
3) Long relief innings eater
4) #3/4 type starter
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.
first come first serve
saved me from putting up a complex poll on either “projectable collegians” or how one prefers to move players.
Rome/Kannapolis
Cameron Bayne and Brett Oberholtzer will make their 2010 debuts.
Trenton
Via Mike Ashmore: Jeremy Bleich will be the starter.
called it off
i’m going down to Virginia and Maryland tommorow so I’ll go to a game tommorow anyways. I’m going reading and portland tommorow on the way south.
2 more
Michael Kirkman in the PCL and Alexi Ogando in the TL.
"I was going to say, 'You’re gay for Elvis.' But then I realized that I, too, am gay for Elvis." ~Adam J. Morris.
can u tell me about ogando
i saw his listing for the game earlier. name didn’t ring a bell off the top and the numbers didn’t strike me off a glance.
btw, i wasn’t meaning to post every starter. i was trying to post more … interesting/intriguing starters, but that obviously is impacted by the limited information that i know. maybe i should post all the starters from now on … dunno … anyhow, i’m sure someone else will pick this up when i don’t have the time to do it
Hard thrower
He was stuck in the DR for a number of years due to visa problems. He projects to be a reliever but the Rangers are having him start in order to build up some innings. He was a late ST cut. He could be in the Rangers bullpen late this year.
Vladimir Guererro - 2010 AL MVP
C.J. Wilson - 2010 AL Cy Young
Neftali Feliz - 2011 Rolaids Relief Man Award
He's 26 but as RangerMad said
He was stuck in the DR for 5 year because of a marriage visa scandal. He has a great (and fresh) arm:
FB 93-98 (can hit 100)
Good slider
decent split change.

Ogando sitting 94-96 last night
according to Jason Cole.

Early slate
Great start so far for Jacob Turner. 3 shutout, 1 h, 4 K’s, 4:1 GO/FO so far. I don’t think he should get rushed, but dang, it’s gotta be awful tempting considering all those positive reviews about him this spring.
Daisuke is churning. 4 scoreless, 2 h, 3 K’s.
Should I be half intrigued with Romulo Sanchez? A bit more control and he looks half intriguing. 4 scoreless so far, 3 h, 2 bb, 5 K’s.
he kinda has to get rushed
Major league deal means he gets 3 years to get to the majors..
i meant far more rushed than that
i remember reading an article this spring that suggested he was ready now …
Turner more advanced than Porcello at the same age
4 IP 1 H 0 BB 5 K
He has the strikeout pitch that Porcello doesn’t have. Turner will be the one that become the next Verlander for the tigers while Porcello is the next Derek Lowe at best which is still very good.
Derek Lowe...
at best? You are severly under rating Porcello. He may not be a big strikeout guy like Verlander, but I see no reason he can’t be just as good. Also, his stuff is good enough to get a lot of strikeouts, but the approach he takes gets him ground balls. At best, I think he could be a Brandon Webb type pitcher when Webb was so dominant a few years ago.
You are selling Lowe short
He’s had a hell of a career.

Derek Lowe, really good
But Porcello is just so far ahead of Lowe at the same point it’s not even funny. When Porcello was in his second full pro season and posting a sub 4 ERA in the majors, Lowe was in short-season ball. If you want to look at age 20 seasons, then Lowe was in Cal League. At age 21, Lowe was in AA. In both his age 20 and 21 seasons, Lowe had an even lower strikeout rate than Porcello did in the minors (and equaled him in the majors).
Lowe didn’t stick in the majors til he was 24 and didn’t stick at a starter til he was 29. While I’m usually cool with conservative forecasts, I don’t think it’s a stretch to expecting Porcello to end up the better pitcher, especially given that he’s relatively raw from the experience standpoint.
turners night has ended
5 innings 2 hits 0 runs 0 BBs 7 Ks
5 GO to 3 FO… 2 hits were a double and a single
Bonderman
not MILB, but Bondo had a nice start today vs cleveland
5 ip, 1 hit, 2 bb, 5k, gave up a run on a wild pitch
aaron hicks starting the season out hot!
0 for 7 with 6 Ks and 1 walk
Couple of A's guys in Kane County
Max Stassi goes 1/4 with his first professional homerun.
Rashun Dixon 2/5 with a double, now 5/10 2 2B, 1 3B, BB, K to start the season. Kind of a deep sleeper but if he can keep from striking out too much could start to turn his tools into production.
not milb
but c.c. just got his no-hit bid ended after going 7 2/3 of hitless pitching. kelly shoppach got a single

I suspect you're talking about lag issues
but am I the only one irritated by the new scoreboard display? You have to scroll for like 3 days to see all the scores. Also, they won’t let you go straight to the boxscore. Instead, it takes you to a game summary.
I also wish they wouldn’t forefront the newly opened tabs, but that’s more of a personal preference on my part rather than poor redesign on theirs.

Derek Norris???
What is up with him right now?

FYI...
I am looking for him at Potomac and not seeing him. Is he hurt? Somewhere else?

Sitting out the first few games due to nerve irritation in his hand
And followed up by 2009 draftee Robbie Erlin
who went 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 5 K.

Jeremy Bleich
6.1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K. There had been some noise over the offseason that he had ramped up his FB velocity, but he apparently was upper 80s and topped out at 90 today.
Indians
Alex White: 5IP, 2H, 0ER, 4BB, 7K
Nick Weglarz: 2-5, 2B, HR, 1 RBI, 2 SO
Lonnie Chisenhall: 1-4, BB
the much waited Cubs update
AAA – Down 1-0 to Nashville in the 7th
Thomas Diamond: 5 ip, 4 h, 1 bb, 5 K’s, 1 R, 1 HBP, 5:5 GO/FO, 81 pitches (51 K’s). Man … if we get good Diamond … good, under control Diamond, for the year, I’ll be pretty … what’s a good … stoked.
AA – Tied 2-2 with Mississippi in the 6th
Austin Bibens-Dirkx – 5 ip, 6 h, 1 bb, 2 R, 6 K’s, 1 HR, 5:2 GO/FO, 83 pitches, 58 K’s so far. Not sure what I expected, but this is better. Here’s hoping. I remember M’s fans liking him somewhat back in the day.
Starlin Castro – 3/3, 1 3B, RBI, 2 SB.
A+ Daytona tied with Brevard 4-4 in the 11th.
Alberto Cabrera – 6 ip, 2 h, 2 K’s. 8:8 GO/FO. Sleeper that some Cubs fans are intrigued with.
Mike Perconte: 3 ip, 1h, 1 bb, 5 K’s. 4:0 GO/FO, 1 HBP, Jack’s boy.
Brett Jackson: 0/3 2 bb. Still no hits on the year, but the walks are a decent sign for me.
A – Down 6-2 to Clinton in the 5th.
Jon Nagel – 3 ip, 6 h, 3 r, 6 K’s. Some bad BABIP luck it seems. Big sinkerballer that is another year removed from surgery and holds some intrigue for me. I can see him developing Zach McAllister-ish.
So far this year, the Cubs system just can’t hit enough.
Hak-Ju Lee
1/4 with a K in A ball.
Is Dae-Eun Rhee being shifted to the bullpen, or was that a one-time thing the other day? Have you heard anything about Dolis’ performance (other than the boxscore I mean – is his fastball still in the mid-90s like it was during the off-season?)

Hobgood
4 ip, 3 h, 5 bb, 4 K’s, 3 r, 1 WP, 4:1 GO/FO.
Eh … not a great start.
Sean Black
Someone noted that they liked him a lot yesterday
5 ip, 4 h, 4bb, 2 K’s, 4 runs (2 unearned), 1 WP, 8:3 GO/FO.
same deal as before
He was a high draft pick out of high school as well, but he’s just been incredibly erratic.
MB vs. Wilmington
One of the more intriguing pitching “matchups” today, Chris Dwyer vs. Zeke Spruill.
Spruill – 5 ip, 5 h, 1bb, 4 K’s, 3 R, 3:5 GO/FO.
Dwyer – 4 ip, 2 h, 4 bb, 2 WP, 4 K’s, 2 R. Um … control didn’t seem to be there today.
Love both of these guys
Both are behind are bigger names in their respective systems but both are very good.
http://bullpenbanter.com
I like Spruill
The reports on Dwyer this spring haven’t been very good.
From BA:
Most scouts will get their first look at Arguelles, but also keep on eye on Dwyer, who threw 90-94 mph last year at Clemson but was working at just 85-88 mph and getting hit hard late in spring training.
Josh Lindblom
Mr. Poll man himself.
Not the best night
3 ip, 8h, 2 bb, 1 K, 1 WP, 3 R, 4:2 GO/FO, 77 pitches, 51 strikes.
Jacksonville Suns
Mike Stanton: 1/3 2R 2BB
Matt Dominguez: 1/3 R 2B
If Stanton continues to not K, I don’t see him staying in AA for very long.
Nick Franklin
4-4 with a double, triple and 2 dingers.
From what I've heard about Franklin he's one of those guys who's solid across the board but not outstanding anywhere.
And I guess his defence would fit into that. I think he’s supposed to be able to stick at SS.
the pick never sucked
He was a guy with a solid glove for a shortstop and a solid power grade coming out of high school, those guys don’t usually last on the board all that long. Then you consider that it was a REALLY weak draft crop last year.
His defense...
gets undersold a bit when it’s called “solid but not spectacular.” He has a very, very good glove, and projects to be a solid major league shortstop. Yes, he doesn’t project as a defensive wizard a la Alcides Escobar, but to be a ~league average shortstop, you have to be a very, very good defender.
So, when you watch him in the context of a minor league game, which I was fortunate enough to get to do a few times this spring, the glove looks pretty damn spectacular. More importantly, I’ve never heard anyone suggest he won’t be able to handle the position as he moves up the ladder.
judging by these statements, and the Mariners lack of a decent SS option coming through the ranks
i could see SEA really push him quickly through the system
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
Another M's guy..
Maikel Cleto – 5ip, 2h, 1er, 0bb, 7k, 7-3 gb-fb, 0 line drives
Encouraging start.
Well, there goes his career

Orioles Recap

Hobgood struggled. Xavier Avery is off to a hot start, finally taking some walks, same for LJ Hoes.

good stuff
The Orioles push their prep picks hard, letting very few of them get short-season time (even the ones who are really raw). Not something I really get, but nice to see that it evidently isn’t hurting the development of some of their best assets.
And they did it again this year
Pushing Michael Ohlman to Delmarva (but he’s splitting time with Justin Dalles, another 09 draftee). Although, they are usually more cautious with their pitchers like Bundy and Beal, who both played in the Appy league first.

Mark Rogers
4.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, he also hit a 2B
Jon Lucroy
3-5, 2B, BB
Trayvon Robinson
0-4, 2K
I think Rogers has got a shot to really re-prove himself after being dogged by so many injuries
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
well, it's all gravy
Rogers is almost certainly a reliever in the long run, and the command is sketchy, but he’s got an exceptional arm. Pretty amazing considering the guy seemed near done for.
i would be shocked if he was a starter
i could see a good 8th inning set-up type, with maybe the ability to close for a bad team
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
maybe
Then again Farnsworth should have been much better than he was/is, but his attitude in virtually every aspect of the game has been terrible. Hard to compare his makeup to that of a guy who suffered a major shoulder injury, was shelved for two years, and then managed to come back with his killer stuff intact.
Rex Brothers
A+ ball – 1 IP, 0Ks, 0 BBs, and 3 Hs for 2 Rs, 1 earned.
Robinson Lopez in A ball – 2 IP, 2 Ks, 0 BBs, 1 H for 1 R
Edouardo Sanchez – 1 IP in AA, 2 Ks, 0 Hs, BBs, or Rs
Donald Veal didn’t do as well as some hoped – 5 IP in AAA, 1 K, 2 BB, 3 Hs, 1 R
TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems
two true outcomes for Halman
through three games and 13 plate appearances he has 7 strikeouts and four walksThe third outcome has yet to occur with 0 hits, let alone any hrs. He is playing in AAA but I am not sure why, he had a hard enough time in AA last year.
Kyle Rose of the Brave
Has started off very well. He has started switch-hitting this season and has been doing very well. He was 3-4 last night, he doesn’t have much pop but has tons of speed and plays great defense.
