Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Wil Myers

I've been reading a lot about Royals catching prospect Wil Myers.  I really like what I've read so far.  I know his sample size after signing was small, but he performed very well.  I'm not sure if he will stick at catcher, but I think his bat could be special.

Any other thoughst on Wil Myers would be helpful.  What kind of player do you project for him?  A year from know, could you see him being among the better catchers in the game?

Next Year at this time

I feel Myers will be one of the most talked about prospects one way or the other. In that he is getting a lot of love now and goes very early in current prospect drafts. Heck MLB has him ranked in the top 50. IF he keeps hitting, and the glove develops, he is a possible top 10 prospect. That said, who can keep up the pace he was on in his limited ab’s? Billy Rowell hit in his first debut and hasn’t since. If he doesn’t mash this year, there will be plenty of people who will be guilty of drinking the KOOL Aid, me amongst them.

how does he compare with rowell at all?

aside from tearing up rookie ball, which is not uncommon….

BA compared him to Jayson Werth

gotta be thrilled if he does that. especially if he stays at catcher, something Werth could not do (knees?).

I wouldn't be...

Werth is one of the most over rated olayers in the game in my opinion. He hits a lot of homers becaue he plays in one of the smallest parks in the league. He has a long swing that keeps him from hitting for contact, but I do like his defense. Also, he didn’t really contribute at all until he was in his upper 20s and playing for the Phillies. If he would have done something with LA or Baltimore before maybe I would give him some more credit, but right now I can’t stand the credit he gets.

I agree

He’s a complete product of his home park. He only hit 15 home runs on the road last year and hit more on the road in ’07 and ’08.

away numbers

ONLY 15 HR on the road? Thats a very good number as most players hit more homeruns in the home park. Im not saying he is a great player or disagreeing with other stuff, but saying he only hit 15 HR on the road doesnt make sense.

obviously...

i didn’t say take the same career path. but it think you’re mistaken if you think the home ballpark makes him. OPS higher 2 out of last 3 years higher on the road.

I'm a big Myers fan

I don’t neccessarily buy in to the Werth comparisons because I don’t see the same speed. However, he should carry a nice stick. It’s just a matter of whether he sticks at catcher or needs to move to 3B or corner outfield. I’m a little leery about players that succeed in their first season with small sample sizes, but if he can build upon his limited ’09 performance, he will shoot up prospect boards.

I like Wil Myers, but let's see what happens

I’m not ready to call him better than Max Stassi or Luke Bailey.

I'll do it for you.

He’s better than Max Stassi and Luke Bailey.

I like Myers

68 at-bats in the most friendly league in the minors is pretty irrelevant, however, no matter how shiny the statline.

Thanks for the input guys

I’m not taking Myers’ early numbers seriously. I know that a lot of players hit like crazy in their debut then they do nothing. We just have to see what he does this year.

I will say that I like when a player signs and performs well. I drafted Kyle Skipworth last year. I wasn’t worried about his poor debut numbers. I thought he would hit. It turns out I was wrong.

I also don’t care if Myers stays at catcher. I have depth there with Wieters and Posey.
