Thoughts on Brandon Wood?

I apologize if there is a recent post discussing Wood. I looked and could not find one.. I'd like to know general thoughts on what Brandon Wood will do this season assuming he is the Angels 3rd baseman. I guess I'm sort of expecting a .250 23hr 70rbi line or somewhere around that.

The reason I ask:

12team 5x5 league. I need AVG and SB on my team and I am contending this year. I have Wood for 1$ for next two years then yearly increase of 50% minimum 5$. I've been offered Shane Victorino who is 15$ for this coming year and will go up 50% each year after.

So my real question is which is better.  5 years of affordable Brandon Wood. 1 year of affordable Shane Victorino.

Wood for Victorino?
Absolutely if you are trying to contend this year.

Unsure it could go either way.

No brainer to me

My comments assume you have a decent 3B to replace Wood and mainly, I hope you weren’t starting Wood as your 3B on a 12-team 5×5 this season. ;)

My expectations for B-Wood are below yours for 2010: 240/300/430 with ~20 HRs. I can’t see more than 60 RBIs either.

If you need AVG and SB, go with Victorino and make a run this year. You’ll never get anything good from Wood in both those categories, short-, mid- or long-term.

As I said previously on a 12-team 5×5, I don’t see Brandon Wood being a starter at 3B, maybe a fringe CI type-o-guy at the most within the next 5 years. I have a bad feeling about this guy… Andy Marte-ish. But that might just be me…

Hmmm

I’ll grant you there is downside risk with Wood – although I think it’s mitigated by the price tag in this case – but “I have a bad feeling about this guy” is not exactly a thorough analysis.

no

I read it and I don’t even disagree THAT much – I guess I was just pointing out that if you wrap up your argument with “I’ve got a bad feeling…” it pretty much discredits everything that you just said.

How close are you to a championship this year?

Because there is no reason to make this trade unless you think it has a good chance of making you a championship contender.

Also, who is Victorino replacing, because thats the improvement that you will see.

I like wood a lot actually. Mainly because hes getting close to his peak years and he’ll be dirt cheap for you. If nothing else wait until the deadline to make the trade because you will have a better idea about your team and wood by then.

+1

It really depends on how close you are to the title this year, because even if Wood under performs your expectations for this year, having him for 10-11-12 for a total of $3 is insane. In a good way.

This year

Wood is not a piece for me. He would be a bench player for my team unless he gets on a tear and I can plug him in my utility spot (I have A-rod/Zimmerman at 3rd/CI). I think I am leaning towards doing the trade.

Wood

I’d usually take the 5 years over 1 unless it was a huge difference in talent. Victorino might end up hitting at the bottom of the lineup with Polanco hitting 2nd so Shane may lose a little bit of value. So I’d take a shot that Wood figures it out.

If your team is a contender, make the deal

If not, keep Wood.

Pretty clear-cut from where I stand.

Thanks for the input… I didn’t make the trade. I do feel like I am contending this year but I decided I will hope that Brandon Wood will be a key addition for my 2011 team.

i have a feeling

Macier Izturis is gonna see quite a bit of time at third base. .. Scioscia loves these types, and he’s one of the few angels that take a walk. . .i could see him batting leadoff for them

Contending or not...

I’d keep Wood. I have a hard time believing Victorino would be a player who could put you over the edge. He’s a nice player, sure, but not a bonafide superstar. Wood COULD be exactly that in a year or two.
