britton
There seems to be a lot of mixed opnion about Britton, but I like him a lot. If he performs well in Double-A he has the ceiling of a number two in my opinion. doesn’t mean he’ll reach that ceiling, but I see that kind of potential in him.

Would Max Ramirez being the 25th man on the Rangers bench completely stunt his development
or does it really not matter at this point.
max
I don’t think it would help him. He needs to play. He needs to go back to Triple-A, prove his wrist is okay, get the strike zone back under control, and continue working on his glove. Hard to do all that if you are rotting on the bench.

Starlin Castro
How good can he be? I’ve seen several comps to Edgar Renteria. Is that fair?
castro
Yeah, I can see that..He’ll need to work on sharpening his plate discipline, but given his age I think that’s a fair comparison.

Zach Phillips
What are your thoughts on him and will he be able to crack the Rangers bullpen at somepoint?
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
phillips
He could probably use more Triple-A time….I know he had the pretty ERA at Frisco but his walk rate was rather high there at 19 in 34 innings. I’d like to see that come down a bit. My guess is that he’ll be up sometime in the second half as a bullpen option.

Sure….I hear the Baseball Prospect Book is a really nice resource, avaialble only at www.johnsickels.net!
And the editor of the book is really hot.
agreed.

favorite
Favorite is a broad question…lol….“best” is Neftali. Personal favorite is Smoak. I’m also rather partial to Moreland and Moscoso as guys who have exceeded expectations.
Do you see Ike Davis hitting more than 30 homers in a season?
You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--
Frederick0220
Brian Matusz
What kind of season rookie season do you see him having? Thanks.
Matusz
hmm….that would be a good one for a community projection.
I’ll say Matusz goes 11-13, 4.35, with a 135/62 K/BB in 187 innings with 185 hits allowed. Some people will be disappointed but then he takes off in ’11.
Jared Mitchell
When do you think he’ll be ready for the big show?
mitchell
well he’s somewhat raw for a college guy….alot depends on if the strikeouts hurt him at higher levels. I’d say 2012.
tex
Holland….i’d say he will be around league-average, maybe a little worse, but better than last year. Neftali should be at least average and probably well above average, which is excellent for a pitcher his age. A lot depends on what role they use him in. In shorter stretches I’d expect he would be more dominant
Favorite sleepers
Who are your favorite sleepers that you think will become top prospects in 2010?
Hak-Ju Lee
I have heard Jeter upside comparisons for Lee. If so what do you think the chances are that he comes even remotely close to that upside?
Slowey is a control freak, and I like it!!
Lee
I don’t think Lee will develop Jeterish power. I could see something like Jeter with half of the home runs taken out.
Will Venable
I have heard comps thrown around like Garret Anderson, but that seems a stretch for me. How do you see him fitting in on at the big league level, in terms of profile and/or comps?
Thanks, always love when you do these John.
Venable
eh….i don’t really see the Anderson comp for Venable. Garrett was already an established veteran by age 27, while Will has just 403 at-bats. Will won’t hit for as high an average certainly, and won’t show the same kind of peak power I don’t think.
Anthony Capra
Do you think he has any chance of cracking the back-end of a top 100 next year? Or is he just another crafty lefty mind-f*****g young hitters w/o enough stuff to actually do well against the big boys?
capra
Well capra was very good last year but I don’t think he throws quite hard enough to rank as an elite prospect. If he maintains his performance in Double-A, he might show up in the back-end of a 100 next year, but he turns 23 this April and overall I thikn it is a long shot.
Grant Green
If all goes well and Grant Green maximizes his potential to become a top prospect, who would be a good major league comparison for him either from the present or the past?
Green
hmmm…..if he develops to his maximum potential, really maxes out the ceiling, he could be a .290 type with 20 homer power and strong defense. Sort of a lower-case Cal Ripken maybe? That would be his maximum.
Miguel Velazquez
What do you think his progression will be like this year? Sticking in the lower levels to adjust to Stateside ball or does his performance (coupled with his age) force an aggressive schedule?
What's the rumpus?
velazquez
Given his makeup issues I think the Rangers should be cautious with him….stability seems like a good plan to me. I’d send him to low-A and leave him there for at least half the season…if he plays well you can bump him up to high-A on July 1st. I would avoid Double-A exposure until he proves to me that his plate discipline and personal discipline can handle pro ball.
Drafted HS players
Hi John, thanks for the AQA!
Is there a type of high school player you would encourage to go to college (rather than sign with an MLB club) because it will help him reach his max potential?
HS
Hmm…..well honeslty that is a case by case thing, I don’t know if there is a particular type. Generally the rawer the player, the more likely they are to benefit from college ball. This is especially true (in my opinion) with players who are emotionally or intellectually raw/immature.
Much would also depend on what college program you are talking about. Some programs are better than others.
2009 Draft
Who do you think was the most misjudged prospect who was drafted in 2009? As in the individual who was most underrated by you and other draft journalists.
by crawdaddy on Mar 3, 2010 10:52 AM EST reply actions 1 recs
hmm
well that’s a little early to say, since it is probably someone drafted in the 10th round that no one has focused on yet. I’m assuming you don’t mean guys who were overslot drafts like Colton Cain or Zach Von Rosenberg.
I think Carlos Ramirez, a catcher drafted by the Angels out of Arizona State in the eigth round, was significnatly underrated by a lot of people.
Yonder Alonso
I’ve only heard negatives about his defense. Is a position change REALLY a posibility here?
We used to laugh at Grandpa when he'd head off and go fishing. But we
wouldn't be laughing that evening when he'd come back with some whore he
picked up in town.
alonso
I doubt he can play outfield and I disregard rumors about him becoming a catcher at this time.
I don’t think his glove is THAT bad at first base, but it won’t be his main asset.
Starlin Castro vs Alcides Escobar
Which SS would you rather own in a dynasty fantasy league? Which SS is a safer bet to stay at short and which one has a higher floor/higher ceiling?
PPPPPPUNTO 4 MVP 2010
dynasty
Well castro has more offensive potential though it will take him longer to find it due to his youth. Both can stay at SS, although Castro has some competition in the Cubs system and if Lee hits at higher levels, Castro may end up at 2B.
Escobar has a higher floor but a lower ceiling. Better glove at this point, although Castro is no slouch.
Madison Bumgarner
Is there increasing concern in the decreased velocity? (I have read that his velocity hasn’t returned and am a bit worried it is leading to something not good).
Bum
I’m monitoring spring reports but want to see some game action data before panicking about it.
Am I concerned? yes.
Am I panicked? no.
Would I pull the plug on him as a prospect? hell no.

Haft noted 89-90
Here is some nuanced news from Chris Haft, the giants.com reporter:
“Bumgarner’s fastball was clocked in the 89-90 mph range, a tad slower than his best velocity readings. Then again, pitching coach Dave Righetti advised him not to overthrow. “He said, ’You’re not going to make the team on the first day,’ and that makes a lot of sense,” said Bumgarner, who’s competing for the fifth starter’s spot."

Pavlidis reported 89.3 mph average from PITCHf/x

And if his average was 89.3 (noted in PITCHf/x stats in article), then wouldn’t the range be more like 88-91?
I think it deserves to be monitored, but it’s too early and too small a sample to take anything from yet.

Ackley
Any chance he has the tools to stick at 2B, and if so, does he pass Lawrie as one of top 2B prospects in minors?
UHS ’87
ackley
I don’t know if he can handle it or not. Just speculation at this point.
Of course, I don’t think Lawrie is really a 2B either. I think he’s a corner outfielder. In any case I think Ackley ranks ahead of Lawrie due to his more polished bat and better athleticism. Not that there’s anything wrong with Lawrie, i love both of them.

Catchers
What % chance do these guys have at sticking as Catchers moving forward?
Wil Myers
Robert Stock
J.R. Murphy
Miguel Gonzalez
Sebastian Valle
catchers
hmm
Myers: 55%
Stock 75% (defensively, bat is still somewhat unproven)
Murphy 60%
Gonzalez 80%
Valle 50%
Stock
This might be what you meant, but of course Stock might be a good defensive catcher but still return to pitching if his bat isn’t all that.
In what St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a "big day" for his club, starter Chris Carpenter took the mound for his first session of live batting practice and promptly buzzed the fuzz on catcher Jason LaRue’s chin with an errant fastball.
"Sorry," Carpenter called from the mound.
"Don’t say you’re sorry," LaRue barked back.
"He said it," pitching coach Dave Duncan said from the side of the cage, "but he didn’t mean it."

What do you think is his ultimate ceiling and how far away do you think he is from contributing?
Armchair mechanics "experts"
On a scale of 1-10, ten being most ridiculous…How ridiculous is it for self proclaimed mechanics experts to look at two seconds of video and declare a pitcher will get injured based on seeing him throw one pitch on video?
mechanics
As i get older, I’m increasingly impressed by how much we DON’T know, and by how ephemeral human predictive capacities really are. Personally I think it is best to evaluate pitchers in person, from multiple angles.I wouldn’t judge anything on one pitch. But I’m also not going to attack people who know more about pitching mechanics than i do…i have no specialized knowledge about biometrics.
gifted vs. peaking early
Thanks, John. Suppose you have a young hitter putting up big numbers at an age-appropriate minor-league level. How can you tell if he’s a real prodigy instead of just a guy peaking early? What do you look for?

tough
Tough question. Statistically, I’d look at the totality of his track record to see if it was out of place. Scoutingwise I’d look at their body…are they maxed out physically? What kind of speed/moblity/athleticism do they have? Generally (in my opinon) a guy with “old player skills” (power, patience, but with a lack of speed and somewhere on the oldguy end of the defensive spectrum) is probably more likely to max out early.
the Jump
Which prospects do you feel have the BEST chance of making the big-league club out of spring training? (maybe a pitcher and a hitter)
jump
Neftali will make the Rangers barring something really weird happening. HItters are harder to predict….scott sizemore seems like a good bet in detroit.
havens
I see him as a guy who can hit ..240-260 with a solid-to-high OBP and 15-20 homers a season at his peak.
Shane Peterson
John, what kind of ceiling do you see for Peterson, and what chance does he have to be a legitimate starting OF, as opposed to a bench guy?
peterson
I don’t think he has enough power for first base, so that makes him an OF. Best defensive position is left; his range may be short for center in the long run although in the short run he’s okay out there. Probably more of a fourth outfielder, as I don’t think he’ll have the power to play a corner regularly.
please rank according to ceiling:
Chris Withrow
Jenry Mejia
julio teheran
arodys vizcaino
shelby miller
zach wheeler
simon castro
pitchers
based purely on ceiling with no attention paid to anything else
Teheran
Withrow
Vizcaino
Mejia
Wheeler
Miller
Castro
All of them have very high celings.
Jason Castro
Assuming he wins the job out of spring training (looking likely) what kind of line do expect out of him in 2010?
Jonathan Joseph
BA ranks him as the 23rd best prospect in the A’s system while he doesn’t crack your top 40.
Could you use Mr. Joseph to illustrate the differences you see in your process of player evaluation vs. that “other” publication?
The monster at the end of this blog.
joseph
Joseph’s statisical line at Vancouver was poor…weak K/IP ratio, too many hits allowed, high walk rate. I have him as a live arm guy with bad command. My oakland list was already crowded and there were just guys I liked better.
BA looks more at scouting reports than I do, while I lean more to the statistical side.
Eduardo Sanchez-Cardinals
If Eduardo Sanchez had been a high draft pick like Chris Perez was(and since their stuff is similar I’d imagine Sanchez would be drafted high), would he be a top 100 prospect like Chris Perez was?
How much stock do you put in Spring Training performances?
I’m thinking specifically about prospects. Is it okay to look at their statistics, or as a general rule do you try to block that out and look at them solely from a scouting perspective?
meta-signature
spring training
Well….spring training isn’t especially predictive due to the small sample sizes involved.
Basically if a guy has a good spring training, that’s nice. If he has an EXCEPTIONAL spring training, well that’s to his credit but it certainly does not override his complete track record. If he has a bad spring training, that’s too bad but it may not mean anything. It might depend on WHY he had a bad spring training. Basically i look at it within the context of his overall record.
Left off
Is there a prospect that in retrospect you regret leaving out of the book; if so, why did you leave them out at first/why did you change your mind, and what grade would they get now?
by aCone419 on Mar 3, 2010 11:34 AM EST reply actions 1 recs
hmm
I can’t think of any MAJOR guys at this point. There are some Grade C maybe C+ guys I wish I could have put in. Two Twins I wish I had included are shortstop James Beresford and catcher Allan de San Miguel.
K Rate
Are you concerned with julio teheran’s low k rate and how common is it for a pitcher to display a low k rate in A ball but raise that rate as he moves up the ladder?
teheran
I’m not worried about it just yet, given his age. His sample sizes have been pretty small. It’s not super common but it does happen, as we’ve seen with some of the prospect retros.
Blake Beavan
what’s his upside at this point?
"If the Saints can reach the Superbowl, the Rangers can reach the World Series." - PhilKid
The Animated Ballpark in Arlington
Name some guys getting lost in the shuffle
Specifically, I’d like to know some guys outside the top 10 in some of the really deep systems (e.g. Rays, Rangers, A’s, etc) that kind of get lost in the shuffle and we would see a lot more excitement about if they were on a team with a more barren farm system like Houston or Arizona.
Hector Rondon
Why do scouts not believe he has much upside?
His K rate has been quite high as he has moved up levels. Thanks.
rondon
Rondon is a mystery, I’m not sure why scouts don’t priase him more than they do. I mean, most people think he’s a decent enough prospect, but I’m not sure he gets enough credit for holding his own in Triple-A at age 21. He’s efficient and he’s shown some ability to dominate.
What are your thoughts
On Julio Borbon? What sort of production can he provide this year-and down the road?
Tyler Matzek
What should we expect from him and his transition to the minors?
matzek
I have not heard if they are sending him to extended spring or will start him in April in low-A. The Rockies are generally fairly conservative with their pitching prospects (witness the handling of Christian Friedrich last year), so I imagine we won’t see maztek higher than Low-A this year unless he’s just blowing people away for an extended period. Fastest case would be a Kershaw-like track, but I think they’ll go slower than that.
Eric Hosmer
With the vision issues hopefully corrected, your thoughts on whether he’s primed for a breakout?
hosmer
I’m anxious to see how he does in April….if the eye problem was the source of his trouble or if it was more than that. We just do’n’t know at this point. One saving grace is that he does control the strike zone well, even when he couldn’t see it. One negative is that Wilmington (his likely assignment to open 2010) is a tough place to hit for most guys.
Who is the most suprising Major Leaguer to you today?
Someone who completely exceeded your ceiling for them.
blackburn
I thought Baseball America was really overrating Nick Blackburn back in 2008, and I’m a Twins fan. He turned out a lot better than I expected.
Desmond Jennings
How do you envision his career path (i.e., when will he make an impact with the Rays and what his is ceiling?)
jennings
Best guess this early in spring training: starts 2010 in Triple-A, slow start in April, begins to heat up in May, excellent in June and July, gets called up in August when B.J. Upton gets injured, hits .245/.321/.365 with seven steals in 12 attempts in August and September, people start to worry, then he gets to play regularly in 2011 and does much better.
Jarrod Parker
Where would he rank in your 50/50 or in your Rotowire Top 100 if he were completely healthy?
Hitting prospects
Which team does the best job of developing hitting prospects?
non-hyped international signees?
who are your few favorite international position player signees of the last few years that didn’t initialy catch in the hype machine? guys who might be 18 now, but with good tools / skills?
hmmm
that’s a very good question, more fodder for a longer essay. I’d need to look up signing bonuses and establish what ‘non hype’ really means, etc.
Please compare Lars Anderson and Nick Weglarz
Special attention to potential upside please
Nick Franklin
Have your thoughts changed on him since the 09 draft? Worthy of being a 1st rounder?
franklin
In my book I gave him a Grade B- and wrote that I was rather optimistic about him. I can’t remember what I said about him on draft day, lol, but right now I find him intriguing. Worthy of the first round….sure. Athletic middle infielders with a chance to hit decently have value.
Florida Starters?
Who do you think has the best chance to emerge from their rotation? Andrew Miller, Rick VanDenhurk or Sean West?
Alex White
His stock seems to have dropped considerably over the past two years; how likely do you think he is to become an impact pitcher, or are his best days behind him?
TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems

I dont’ think his stock has dropped much, he still looks like a terrific pitching prospect to me. We need to see him in pro ball of course but he could be a B+/A- prospect a year from now.
Future OF Prospects: Who do you like most going forward?
Brett Jackson, Mike Trout or Jared Mitchell

tough
Toughie….I’m a big fan of both Trout and Mitchell. Jackson may have the best pure ceiling but I’m not at all convinced about the bat yet. . .want to see him control the zone outside the Northwest League. I just love Trout for some reason, and I’ve been a big Mitchell fan for awhile…love the athleticism and the walks and i expect his power to improve. In my book I have it Trout/Mitchell/Jackson. You can flip-flop Mitchell and Trout if you want.
Slade Heathcott
What are your thoughts on Slade Heathcott? What’s his ceiling? Who does he compare to?

heathcott
Great tools of course….but injury prone and with significant makeup issues. The Yankees say the makeup concerns are overblown, but of course they are going to say that. No real pro data to look at. Ceiling….hmm….Larry Walker maybe? Will he get there? Have to see if he stays healthy, if he controls the strike zone, if he keeps his head on straight. High-reward high-risk guy.
Jordan Zimmermann
If he had not exceeded the rookie innings limit, but still gotten hurt/had TJ, where would he have rated on your top 50 pitchers list? Thanks!
TJ
TJ is an automatic grade downshift and he wouldn’t have appeared on the Top 50 as a result. Some people don’t worry so much about TJ and keep guys with it rated highly even during their recovery period. I disagree with that, since recovery is NOT automatic (Jesse Foppert) so I opt for caution until they retake the mound.
Jonathan Galvez
I’m developing a man crush on this guy. What is your projection for him? ie- offensive upside & can he stick at SS. Thanks!
"Six of my best friends just walked into the booth . . .and they're all named Bud" -Harry Caray
galvez
Exclelent strike zone judgment, has some power potential, stole some bases, looks good on paper in rookie ball and still quite young at age 19. Scouts have mixed opinions; most of them don’t think he’ll stick at shortstop. I suspect they are right, but if his hitting contnues to develop they will find a place for him.
Rate (with the highest ceiling) the top 5 shortstops in the draft this year and eta's to the bigs!
Grant Green, Jiovanni Mier, Nick Franklin, Chris Owings, Mychal Givins, or anyone else you think are better. These were the first 5 taken in the draft.
Thanks,
I love these Q&A’s please do more!
Jackson v. Wells
Who would you start in CF for the Tigers this year?
President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.
Kinda wordy question and maybe not what you're looking for
There has been a lot of discussion about the decline of African-American players in baseball. But with lots of young African-Americans on top prospect lists – Jason Heyward, Mike Stanton, Dom Brown, Michael Taylor, Desmond Jennings, Chris Carter, Aaron Hicks, Tim Beckham, Dee Gordon, Jared Mitchell, Austin Jackson, Donovan Tate….
Do you think the tide may be turning?
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
topic
I think that’s a great (if sensitive) topic and one I’ve actually thought a lot about. Is the tide turning? It is possible. However, I’d be interested in knowing how many of this new group are coming out of the inner city or RBI programs, and how many are suburban kids from middle or upper class backgrounds.
In fact, the whole socioeconomic origin of major league players of all races is an area I’d like to see researched. I’m not sure how you’d go about doing that.
Mike Stanton
Not African-American. I think he’s of Puerto Rican descent.
Revere/Hicks
How soon do you expect to see Ben Revere and Aaron Hicks in the Twins outfield? Thanks!
OF
Hmm
Revere….cup of coffee in 2011. Hicks a year behind that. I wouldnt’ expect to see them as starters together until 2013 or 2014, assuming that Hicks starts developing his power.
Jose Iglesias
What do you think his ceiling is with the bat and is the the best defensive SS in the majors the day he steps on the field for the first time?
iglesias
I’m somewhat skeptical about his bat to be honest, though Red Sox officials say he has exceptional handeye coordination and they expect him to hit. We’ll see if that pans out. Best in the majors once he gets there? I wouldnt’ go that far…not until we actually see him play.
Fabio Martinez
I admittedly don’t know a whole lot about this kid, but his strikeout rates have been ridiculous. Did you see him in person this year, and if so, does he look like he has front of the rotation potential?
martinez
I did not see him in person but have talked with people who have. Yes, he has front of the rotation potenital. at least a number two…MAYBE a number one if it all comes togehter, thought that’s a long way off.

Does he take a step up this year? Most pegged him as a #1 or #2 guy down the road barring injury. Do you think he’s become a bit over looked now considering he didn’t light the league on fire in 2009? Thanks.

People are too hard on him. I expect he’ll take a small step forward this year, then break out in 2011 (provided he doesnt’ get hurt, always a risk of course).
niese
both can be number three/four strike-throwing inning-eating lefties. I like Niese a little better.
Starling Marte
what have you heard about his ceiling, and does he project to hit for much power? I’ve seen video of him, and he has a weird stance, but he looks like a good-sized fast-twitch OFer in the Alfonso Soriano mold. Is he a good sleeper for 2010, or just another Toolsy guy with an average chance of becoming something?
marte
He’s a good sleeper, I had him as a Grade C+ “with higher potential” in the book this year. I don’t see him as a big power guy, maybe 10-15 homers at peak….his skills will be batting average and speed if he makes it.

Yes, he has some breakout potential. He was a two-way guy in college and I like that kind of athleticism. Someone to watch in the Cubs system for certain.

How much AAA time do you think he needs? How much would you guess he gets?

I’m not sure who you are talking about here.

Jeremy Jeffress
If we can stay away from the herb, is this guy a top-50 prospect? Any chance we’ll see him as a September bullpen call-up or is all this time off really hurting him in more ways than are immediately obvious?
jeff
He has a top 50 arm, but even aside from the pot problems his command is shaky enough to keep him off the list or just at the bottom of it right now. I doubt we see him in the majors this year even if he comes back successfuly from the suspension. He has a lot to prove on and off the field.

Next year's list
who are most likely in the top 5 for next year?
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
list
hard to say of course….we don’t know how the draft will shake out, who may or may not get promoted etc.
On present assumptions it could be something like Montero, Hellickson, Chapman, Carlos Santana, Pedro Alvarez, Mike Stanton..

From the 2009 draft
Which 5 players do you believe you have the best careers.
09
Strasburg, Ackley, Green, Trout, Turner.

Eric Thames
I know you drafted him for your Shadow Twins. Do you think he’ll end up having a productive major league career? How does he compare to his brother Marcus?
thames
As far as I know they aren’t brothers.
I like Eric’s bat but he has to prove he can stay healthy, which is apparently a big if.

if he hits in Double-A in a healthy season like he did last year in the FSL, he should be a good player.

Thomas Neal
What type of year do you see for him this season and what kind of line do you expect for him in his peak MLB years?
by i r noobie on Mar 3, 2010 1:50 PM EST via mobile reply actions
neal
Some skepticism is understandable since we haven’t seen him higher than the California League, but after seeing him in the Arizona Fall League I think he’s legimate. I expect perhaps a slow start in Double-A early but he’ll pick it up by June and finish with numbers just a bit weaker than last year. I could see him becoming a .280/.340/.460 hitter.

Outside of Kiker and Scheppers,
Who is the best reliever candidate in the Rangers minors that has not seen MLB time?
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
relief
i suspect that Danny Gutierrez will eventually move to relief and be very successful in that role, assuming he doesn’t get himselt run out of the game first with bad behavior.

Can you provide any scouting information on Gary Sanchez?
I know the Yankees signed him out of the DR for 2.5 million, but what has he done since?
"When Justin Upton faces Lincecum, I think Christ might appear in the heavens, and the world will end." -JakeFree
sanchez
Sanchez….listed 6-2 195 currently, righthanded hitter and thrower, 17 years old, bat considered somewhat similar to jesus montero at the same stage, excelelnt power potential, is more athletic than montero and has a better chance to stay behind the plate. We need to see what he can do against live pitching, of course. Will probably begin 2010 in the Gulf Coast League.
Aaron Crow
Do you see his potential more as a starter or a closer and when do you see him making an impact with the big league club?
crow
I see him more as a starter, though I suppose closing is an option if he has trouble with his secondary pitches. Impact…late this year or in 2011. Perhaps the struggles of Luke Hochevar (who was rushed and hasn’t really gotten over it) might make the Royals a bit more cautious with Crow.
who are your top 5 prospects from last year's rookies
Having done all your not a rookie posts, who do you think are the best 5 prospects among last year’s rookies? This was the community list done earlier this fall http://www.minorleagueball.com/2009/12/10/1194522/last-years-rookies-wrap-up-and
What separates Carlos Santana from Tyler Flowers?
seeing how both spent plenty of time in AA and are only 3 months apart.
santana
Santana is somewhat more athletic and has a better chance to remain a catcher long-term. he also doesn’t strike out as much.
Riser
What prospect outside your top 50 has the best shot at getting inside the top 10/20 in your 2011 list?
by guru4u on Mar 3, 2010 2:25 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
riser
I dunno….tons of candidates for that. Miguel Sano could if he lives up to the scouting reports. Bobby Borcerhing. Anthony Rizzo. Zeke Spruil. Lots of B- guys could rise.
Rank these 6
How would you rank these six players, in terms of their future value (including speed/defense/everything)? Andrus, McCutchen, Heyward, Beckham, Brett Anderson, and Carlos Gonzalez.
ranks
I don’t like to make comparions between pitchers and hitters so I’m not going to rank Brett Anderson with those other guys.
Heyward, McCutchen, Andrus, Gonzalez, Beckham.
How long until these guys get called up? And what do they need to prove first? Strasburg, Crow, Storen, Arguelles?
Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.
callup
Strasburg up in July at the latest. Just needs to get his feet wet.
Storen up by July at the latest if he doesn’t open in the pen right away
Crow sometime 2011.
Arguelles…no idea.
What should the A's do in the next few years at 1B?
Barton at 1B Carter at DH?
RIVER CATS: AAA CHAMPS!
Top 5 prospects, glove only
No offensive consideration
glove
Iglesias and A. Escobar are the top two. Impossible to answer this beyond that on short notice given your parameters…there must be 20 guys with great gloves in the lower minors who will never hit enough to make the majors despite their great defense.
Jeff Clement
How do you think he does this year and what kind of a career do you envision him having?
clement
.260/.335/.465.
Has a long career as a platoon slugger/1B bat, emergency catcher. But doesn’t become the star originally envisioned.
Shelby Miller
What sort of season does Miller have to have to rise into the elite level of pitching prospects?
miller
Well he’s already elite enough to rank on most prospect lists despite his lack of experience. He needs to go to the Midwest League, throw strikes, and stay healthy. I know that’s vague but it is what he needs to do.
Grant Desme Corey Brown
With Desme out of baseball, Does Brown have what it takes to be a successful starting outfielder?
brown
Brown has the tools to be a regular outfielder in the mode of Kirk Gibson….lots of power and speed, but somewhat erratic and injury-prone. He needs to prove he can make contact against good pitching for that to happen, however, and he hasnt’ proven that consistently yet.
Jesus
If Jesus were a prospect do suspect he would be a Pitcher or a Hitter? If a hitter, would he be a slick fielding up the middle field with high contact rate, or powerful corner guy? I’d imagine he’d have a high OBP no matter what. If a pitcher, would he be a control guy or a power pitcher?
Or maybe you see it some other way.
He’d be more of a Sidd Finch type.

Jesus Colome

"Six of my best friends just walked into the booth . . .and they're all named Bud" -Harry Caray
Jesus
Well that depends.
Are you talking about Jesus the misunderstood prophet of Allah as envisioned by Islam? Jesus the Son of God as envisioned by the Christians? Jesus the local Judean avatar of Krishna as envisioned by vedantic Hindus? Or Jesus the nice rabbi as envisioned by the Jews? Jesus the teacher as envisioned by New Agers? Which Jesus are you talking about?
Brent Morel
Any chance I playing regularly at 3B this season?
"And we'll see you tomoorrow night!" Jack Buck
best tool package coming into the draft...
Bryce Harper or Josh Hamilton in 1999?
hmm
well you’re comparing apples/oranges since Harper is a catcher and Hamilton was an OF.
Probalby Harper.
