I actually prefer him to Bell, but even if others don’t he shouldn’t be this far behind Bell.

Interesting

Why do you prefer him to Bell?

Don’t mean to block up the voting space, you can respond below if you’d like.

by Jordan Tuwiner on Mar 20, 2010 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just not sold on Bell

Coming into last year he was a likely 1B/DH type, so the apparent defensive improvement is a bit hard to buy all of a sudden. I want to see what happens this year in regards to defense with him. I know that Darnell is no lock to stick at 3B either, but he’s not looking at 1B if he doesn’t, he has other options available. I think the bats are similar as well. Not a massive difference, I have Darnell like 10-15 spots ahead of Bell, I just think this is very low for Darnell and too much SNTS is going on here as per usual.

SNTS?

Other sources like BA and BP also clearly agree with the community that there is a 50+ spot difference between Bell and Darnell.

We had this discussion a while ago when Bell was up for vote. I still stand by my opinion that Bell’s bat is significantly better than Darnell’s, and the D is comparable. There should be this large of a gap between the two – has nothing to do with SNTS.

by guru4u on Mar 21, 2010 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions

That's fine

Doesn’t mean I have to agree with that. If we all agreed with BA and BP’s lists, we wouldn’t do this or have a need for our own opinions. If Bell shows he really can be an above average defender, then I will be sold on him and would actually have him higher than he is here.

As for the SNTS, 10 of the last 16 picks have been players drafted in 2009. We just put Mike Moustakas on the list at #77, where did we rank him 2 years ago? Last year? There is a tendency to rank new draftees high and when they struggle we drop them down the list quickly. I prefer to see some performance before ranking guys too highly, but I realize not everyone does that. That’s fine and all, but without those differences in opinions we’d be putting out BA’s list all over again, and that would be a waste of time.

True

But I also think it is just plain lazy to claim SNTS when the community ranks someone higher than you would.

If a baseball exec had the choice between Donovan Tate and Mike Moustakas, which player do you think he would choose? That’s really what all of this boils down to. IMO, most GM’s would prefer to have Tate in their system – all else being equal. Maybe you disagree with that statement, but again it has nothing to do with SNTS.

I absolutely hate the SNTS argument. It seem to be the catch-all statement when some new guy gets pumped up – be it here or elsewhere. If you disagree with the statement, ranking, etc. – then make an argument why you think your guy is better. Don’t just call it SNTS. Again, it is just plain lazy.

What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

This is a joke how much lower he is than Flowers, where Ramos is a more complete catcher who could very easily take a huge jump this year

+1 Sano

Dont like anyone on the current poll too much; Darnell probably would be the best. Sano, H. Lee, Lars, Hosmer, and C James are the best four left I can think of.

BTW, the tester pool seems awfully shallow now. I’m pretty sure that Sano got a tester before, but he’s not listed. LIkewise Lee, I think. Anyway, I think all these guys should be testers.

Thanks man

Lee actually wasn’t supposed to come off the poll, guess that’s what I get for trying to that and entertain my daughter at the same time. I put him on the poll and he will stay on regardless of votes since I forgot him.

Thanks again, totally spaced that and the other that did drop off the poll.

Once Again

I would vote almost the entire players off the poll list before this group.

By the way, when can Ben Revere get a test?
