Lofgren traded to Brewers for Omar Aguilar

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/87800467.html

The Indians and Brewers made a deal that would keep Lofgren in Milwaukee's system. As an Indians fan it's good to see him getting a chance, but I'm more interested in Aguilar. I've found some scouting reports on him, but most date back to 2008. Seems like he has a live arm with plus velocity, but lacks command and a breaking ball.

Can anyone give me some more details on the kid?

Supposedly has thrown as high as 98 in the past, but if I recall pitch f/x had him sitting around 90-91 in the AFL, dipping as low as 87. The reports I’ve read have him with a PW slider which would explain his big K totals, even when he was getting lit up in AA. Biggest problem is command. Looked like a pretty decent RP prospect a year ago, but took a definite step back in 2009. Certainly not useless, but he’s not really more than just a guy to take a flier on at this point.

As a Brewer fan I was happy when they picked Lofgren in the rule5 draft, and he has looked ok this spring. Just wondering why he never got much of a shot in Cle? That had too many other soft-tossing lefties?

He was a big time prospect after the 06 season, but he had some family problems (I believe his mother was diagnosed with cancer) and some injuries that made his stock drop. The Indians were really high on him, some other arms just passed him by. He got back on track last year, but he isn’t the same pitcher as he was before (reached the mid 90’s in 06) and he had some unsustainable numbers in 09.

Basically his stock fell and the Tribe has other options ahead of him.

Thanks for the info! Sounds like a good gamble for Doug Melvin to take, especially considering the real lack of depth [pitching] in the high minors for the crew.

Seems like he may be able to reinvent himself

As a nice setup man someday.

At least starting the season

they said they’re going to start him in AAA Nashville.
