Question For You: Minor League Games

I am starting the trek back to Lawrence Monday but won't be fully operational again until Wednesday. In the meantime, here is a question for you, as I continue the process of getting to know the Minor League Ball community better.

Obviously you are here because you are interested in minor league baseball and prospects. But how many minor league games do you attend each year? What teams/leagues do you prefer? Do you study the players closely, or do you just go to enjoy the atmosphere? Do you take the family?

How many minor league games do you attend each year? – A lot. Bowie and Frederick are only about 30 minutes away from me so I attend games there regularly. I usually take a trip down to Norfolk once or twice per season. Delmarva is only about an hour and a half away so I attend those games a lot. Aberdeen is a bit of a drive (2 1/2 hours) but still manageable. I dont know exactly how many games I go to per year though…..

What teams/leagues do you prefer? – I enjoy AA (Baysox) and A+ (Keys) the most. That’s probably because they are the closest teams to me and usually have the better prospects.

Do you study the players closely, or do you just go to enjoy the atmosphere? – Study closely.

I usually hit about 10-15 a year. Now that there is a team in Springfield that is. I’ll catch about 10 Springfield Cards games and 5 NW Ark Naturals games. It’s about an hour and fifteen minute drive to see the Cards. I’m basically a Texas League only guy now. It’s the closest.

I’ll take the wife and daughter and they’ll relax in the grass. I’ll take my scorecard and notebook and write stuff down. I enjoy taking a friend or two as they are “nerds” about the game just like me.

last year I went to about 20 games

went to AAA, AA, and SS-A. I enjoyed SS-A better as your could actually talk to the prospects for a time. Too bad they did away with Oneonta. AAA is awful, the players can be dicks. AA is hit or miss, some guys are cool Brad Holt, Mejia, Montero are great examples of being cool to fans.

I was shocked at Mejia's english.

For a guy that didn’t know any when he signed, he really mastered the language quickly.

About 15 FSL games a year

only at the Brevard Manatees games (A+ league affiliate of the Brewers) and I take my finance and her parents on occasion. I will go to any game where top prospects are present (or Thursday dollar beer nights). And in response to Bravesin07, single A players can be dicks too (i.e. Tony Thomas Jr).

Atmosphere

It’s hard to say I go to Brooklyn Cyclones games for anything other than the atmosphere, when the stadium is a beautiful example of minor league closeness, plus it’s squarely on the beach, with Astroland (RIP) visible over the left-field wall. I do love the NY-Penn league, and am a Mets fan, so I do enjoy the baseball aspect, no doubt, but the true attraction for Cyclones games is the fun times and wonderful atmosphere at KeySpan. I go to a good handful of games each summer. The stadium for the Staten Island Yankees is also a nice draw, with Manhattan visible over the wall and across the Harbor.

Growing up, I regularly attended Knoxville Blue Jays, Nashville Sounds, and Birmingham Barons games. I was a ravenous baseball consumer in any form. Though it seems I spent more time chasing foul balls at K-Jays games than watching the action (I have dozens of Southern League balls to this day). Though I paid enough attention to know which players’ autographs I wanted after the game. Players were usually quite gracious and approachable. Seeing the Barons play at Rickwood was always fun, as Rickwood is a treasure trove of baseball history. And I’ll never forget seeing Michael Jordan and Frank Thomas (rehabbing an injury) play in the same game. Jordan hit a double, even.

Now that I am in College, I might be able to see the WV Power play a few times this season

last year I went to the South-Atlantic League All-Star Game in Charelston so that was fun. Also when you go to a WV Power game be prepared for the awsomeness that is the toast guy, I don’t know is actual name but all he does in heckle the oposing players. Like when they strike out he says that they are toast and he the proceeds to throw some toast to the fans, but don’t eat the toast the bread has been sitting in his car all day

The Vermont Lake Monsters are really the only chance I get to see live games in the area

UVM cut their baseball program, and the Expos got sick of empty stands. I’d say I usually get to 20 a year, although I’ll likely hit more this year with the Lake Monsters possibly moving after the season.

Fantastic area for Minor Leagues

I frequent about 15 Prince William Cannons game a year (15 min from stadium) a couple Frederick Keys and Bowie Bay Soxs games and I try to make it down for at least 1 Richmond Braves game a year.

Minor League games

My wife and I go to 10-12 minor league games a year. We live in Durham, within walking distance of the stadium, so most of them are Bulls games, but when traveling we try to go to games in other areas. I study closely, my wife takes in the atmosphere. My preference is really AA ball as opposed to AAA since there are so many older players (non-prospects) in AAA.

by SChandler on Mar 15, 2010 8:46 AM EDT reply actions

But how many minor league games do you attend each year? Probably roughly ten.

What teams/leagues do you prefer? I used to love it when I lived in Iowa, because several Midwest League parks and two PCL parks were within driving distance. I preferred the Midwest League parks, though. Now I live in Eastern Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Midwest) are the only team nearby.

Do you study the players closely, or do you just go to enjoy the atmosphere? I usually take the time before games to pick out a few players I’d like to see, and try to watch their AB’s/outings closely. In the MWL, though, you’ve usually got significant time between those moments.

Do you take the family? I’m married but don’t have kids. My wife comes with me to games on occasion and likes keeping score. All told, I’m probably with my wife a third of the time, with someone else another third, and by myself for the rest.

That's all I've got for you today, unless you're interested in some Chris Capuano/Tom Haudricourt Fan Fiction.

Minor League Games

# About 70. Mostly A- and A+

What teams/leagues do you prefer? I hold season tickets to the Potomac Nationals, and I make it a point to go to Harrisburg and Hagerstown at least once a summer, and most summers, I also make it to Frederick and Bowie, too.

Study…Atmosphere? Both. I go to a game every weekend that my team is on the road and will gladly go to an independent-league game knowing full well that these are still professional baseball players – I’m not one of those affiliated-only snobs.

by Wooden_U_Lykteneau on Mar 15, 2010 9:30 AM EDT reply actions

I get to about 20 games a year. About 15 AA Carolina Mudcats games and 5-10 Durham Bulls games. The wife and I also sometimes make trips to all star games if they’re in a good location. This year we’re going to the AAA all star game at the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs home field.
I sometimes go to relax and sometimes to study players. It depends on who I’m seeing and my mood. My wife enjoys the atmosphere and picks favorites based mostly on how nice the guys are, not how talented they are (God forbid I ever say anything bad about Johnny Rayburn’s ability, as he is a truly nice guy).

by Cormican on Mar 15, 2010 9:46 AM EDT reply actions

No affiliated teams around

I just have the Saints, which are good for the odd-ball player (saw Strawberry back in the day) or someone like Scheppers. Though in the mid-late 90’s the Twins were certainly minor-league worthy.

So I rarely go to Saints games, once a year max, if that.

I usually ALWAYS study players are sporting events (and musicians at concerts too).

I catch about 15-20 games a year

I live really close to Kane County, so I make quite a few of their games. Those I’ll take the family to.

I also travel for work quite a bit (around 40%), so I get to catch games all around the US. Last year alone I watched games in Chattanooga, Indy, Lowell, Winston-Salem and Harrisburg. This year I am hoping to add Salt Lake, Portland and Myrtle Beach to the list.

I also grew up in Peoria, so I went to many many Chiefs games as a kid. I remember when I was in college they actually brought in Jim Thome right after he broke into the bigs with Cleveland, and they had a booth set up. I was able to get his autograph and shake his hand. That was pretty cool.

Not often

I’ve only been to a handful of minor league games and they were all Paw Sox games. Those were mostly before I started to get into following prospects at all, too. Living in the city without a car makes it harder to travel to any nearby minor leagues. I’ll have to try to get up to some Lowell Spinners’ games this seasons.

by mentalpowers on Mar 15, 2010 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

just a few

How many minor league games do you attend each year? Roughly 5. I live on Long Island, and it’s virtually impossible to get to any weekday games, as the closest team (Brooklyn Cyclones) is a good hour away, so that leaves weekends.

What teams/leagues do you prefer? Anywhere I can get to, but I love low minor league ballparks for the atmosphere. I’ve been to a few upper minors games (AA, AAA) and I just like the atmosphere of the low minors better, I think. The small ballparks, the rosters of (mostly) unknown players.

Do you study the players closely, or do you just go to enjoy the atmosphere? I usually just enjoy the atmosphere, unless there’s a player I really want to look at. One time, at Oneonta, I was right behind home plate watching Randy Choate throw a complete-game one-hitter. That was cool.

Do you take the family? Yup. Although the kids usually don’t make it past the 7th inning.

Brooklyn Cyclones games are a hell of a lot of fun

Great environment, as good as any in the minors. I don’t get to go too often though, maybe once or twice a year.

I went to a Hudson Valley Renegades when Colome was pitching, which was cool. That’s SSA ball so it was pure gimmicks to get fans to show up. I remember a while back they had the mascot, Ricky Raccoon I think is his name, get married to some female raccoon character. God bless the minor leagues.

Cyclones

Cyclones games are awesome. The ballpark is literally right on the Coney Island boardwalk. You can walk down the block to the original Nathan’s and get a hot dog and beer before the game, walk along the boardwalk, and just enjoy a summer night in New York.

I’ve been to one Hudson Valley Renegades game. I don’t know why I haven’t made it to more. Brooklyn is the closest, and if I want to venture further, I’ve kind of settled in to making the trip to New Britain to catch the Rock Cats.

We have a spot in New Hampshire we like about 45 minutes away from the Fisher Cats, so I try to catch them a few times a year, too.

As many as I have time for.

AAA Portland Beavers are closest to me (20 minutes), followed by the low-A Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (an hour), AAA Tacoma Rainiers (2 1/2 hours) and then various Northwest League teams that are about 3-4 hours away (Everett, Tri City, Eugene, Yakima).

Being a Mariner fan, I tend to go to games when I get a chance to scope out Mariner prospects, so whenever Tacoma is in Portland or Everett is in Keizer I try to be there for at least a couple games out of the series. I try to head out to other games, especially in Portland since it’s so close and the ballpark is awesome, whenever there is a hot prospect playing, or if I just want a day at the ballpark.

Not as many as I'd like

Catch some of the Eugene Emeralds or Keizer Volcanoes (short season low a), and occasional AAA games In Portland. I take my sons, though they don’t have the passion for baseball that I do. I usually pick out the few players that are considered true prospects and watch them carefully, o/w we just enjoy the atmosphere.

But how many minor league games do you attend each year?
I usually hit about 65 minor league games a year.

What teams/leagues do you prefer?
I prefer the teams and leagues near my house! Seriously though I used to live in a AAA town and I really enjoyed that major league/minor league connection. I also saw AA in two town (one an hour away, the other 2 hours away). I liked seeing guys develop from the low minors to higher levels of play. Plus you see a lot of future major leaguers in AA. For instance the 2006 Texas Lg AS game featured Troy Tulowitzki, Hunter PEnce, Alex Gorson, Billy Butler, Chris Ianetta, Ubaldo Jimenez, Brandon Wood, Kurt Suzuki and Ben Zobrist.

Now I live in the Carolina League and see games for 3 SAL teams as well. The competition isn’t as good, but you get to see players develop. You also get to see the disasters – guys who were picked in early rounds and just dont’ pan out – a lot of those guys never made it to AAA.

Do you study the players closely, or do you just go to enjoy the atmosphere?
A little of both – some places are filled to the brim with atmosphere. The old Ray Winder Stadium in Little Rock was almost too hard to pay attention to the games. The fans were always rowdy, the beer cheap, the setting was intimate and you just couldn’t help but watch what was going on. They don’t have places like that anymore – the new parks just don’t measure up in that regard – too gentrified, both the buildings and the fans.

But I always watch the players. You really get a feel for who has what it takes to succeed. I just wish more parks let you in for batting practice – you can learn as much about a player in bp then you can in the game sometimes.

Do you take the family? No. I want to watch the game, family prohibits that. Occasionally my husband will go with me – if there is a guy he wants to see (a major leaguer) or a guy who went to Carolina (our alum).

by KSM on Mar 15, 2010 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

I do see some games in the Appy League, too. That’s almost like watching high school ball some days – but you do see some high round draft picks – lots of foreign guys, too. Again, always an interesting crowd to watch if the game gets too boring.

by KSM on Mar 15, 2010 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t get to see as many games as I’d like these days, maybe 5-8 a year now. I live in Charleston, so I go to the Riverdogs games. I’m hoping to see more games this year, and maybe hit a few other parks (Savannah, Asheville, Charlotte, Durham, Myrtle Beach, and maybe Wilmington).

AA and Rookie Ball

Typically about 5 AA games a year, live about an hour away from Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA), but I am right smack in the middle of the Appy League and see a lot of games. Usually watch JC Cardinals or Elizabethton Twins, as they typically have more intriguing prospects to watch. Looking to attend more AA this year as there looks to be a lot of top organizational prospects playing in the Southern League this year.

Indians Farm teams

I am a big Indians fan so I prefer their minor league teams. I follow all minor leaguers on the computer to compare the Indians farm system. Last year I went to 6 or 7 Akron Aeros games. It is a family event. I have 6 year old twin boys who go to all the games with me and my wife wants to start going with us this year. I plan on also attending games for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Indians A affiliate) and Lake County Captains (Indians A affiliatte).

AAA and MLB because of location

I live about 20 min from Safeco and 25 from Cheney Stadium (Tacoma Rainers) and go to 3-4 games at each. Mainley go to Tacoma because it’s a lot cheaper and I can take my nephews to a game without breaking the bank…frankly they don’t seem to care much Tacoma vs. Seattle and they live even closer to Cheney than I do.

Hoping to catch an Everett Aquasox game this year, but it’s over an hour a way.

It’s nice having the Seattle AAA club so close, but I wish we had a AA club close to go see. Better chance of seeing more real up and coming prospects it seems to me.

I probably have to say I go for atmosphere, or more correctly, to share the love of baseball with my nephews and see the game through their eyes. It helps to kindle my enthusiasm even more to see their love for the game develop. By myself, I’d rather watch the MLB game on TV than pay the prices and deal with parking and such.

I work swing shift so I can only go to games on the weekend unless I take a day off, which obviously affects how often I can get to games.

Don't Get Out Much

It’s a summer tradition for Mrs. H and me — weekend camping in Rhode Island, and a PawSox game. She wondered at first how we could see the Yankees up close for $10 a ticket, and she came to like it. A lot.

Now, it’s easy to pick out a minor league team while we’re on vacation. Two years ago, it was the Smokies in Kodak, where we saw Sam Fuld, Gaby Sanchez and Wellington Castillo; this year it’s likely to be something in the San Jose-Stockton area.

And I find that I go more not to scout for roto anymore but to relax in the stands with a cold soda and to watch kids play. If one of their names is familiar because I’ve read it here, so much the better. Did I see Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer in New Britain? Yup. It was neater to see them play and not to chalk up another I-saw-him-when-he-was.

I live 45-60 minutes from Geneva, IL where the Kane County Cougars play

Since I’m an A’s fan, I try to see what games I can. As a bonus, I am able to cover these games for a website that covers Chicagoland sports. This means free admission, a seat in the press box (which is basically right behind home plate at a minor league game. Not too high up. Amazing view.), and food! I don’t get paid for the work, but it’s a nice little hobby. I’m hoping to get to cover a few games a month this season.

minors

I had the misfortune of growing up in one of the only states in the country with no minor league team (Minnesota). We had the majors, of course, but the nearest minor league teams were either Beloit or Des Moines, both about six hours away.

I do, however, make as many minor league road trips as I can, and hit 3 or 4 cities at a time. Over the years I’ve gotten to most of the Midwest League along with a handful of AAA teams.

Re:

I try to see about 4-6 games a year. I live in MD so Bowie, Frederick, Potomac, Aberdeen and Hagerstown are close. I’m an O’s fan, so I like seeing their teams in particular. But really I like seeing prospects, so any games that have them would be the games I prefer. That would mean I like the upper minors games the most. So, I do study the prospects, and seeing them in person does affect my opinion of them, but usually not too much. You cant form too meaninginful of an opinion by seeing a player only once, but seeing them even once can confirm or contradict what you previously thought of them.

The non-congested (usually) and homey atmosphere of minor parks is attractive and altho I find the concessions to be about expensive as the MLB parks, at least the parking usually is free (and close). Some of the stadiums are really nice. E.g., Aberdeen’s stadium is gorgeous, and I highly recommend it if you’re in the area. I did go to Delmarva’s stadium once and it was very nice, too.

I travel a good bit so I’ll go to a minor league when I’m on the road if possible. Last year, I went to the Frisco park (Texas); interesting stadium in that some of the seats are in house-like structures in back of the other seats. Have also been to Reading’s stadium, Lake Elsinore and West Michigan.

NY-Penn League

I would like to say I attend a lot of Tri-City Valley Cats (NY-Penn League) games but I usually only make 1 or 2 a year. That’s about the same amount of trips I make to Yankee Stadium as well. In hindsight I wish I had attended more Tri-City games because of players such as Hunter Pence and Jason Castro.

I love Baseball but most of what I see is on cable (Yankees and Mets plus the Extra Innings package). Some minor league baseball is telecast on those stations as well (Staten Island and Brooklyn). Being 3 to 4 hours away from NY or Boston limits my access to Major League Baseball whereas Tri-City is only 45 minutes away.

We also have limited College Baseball available (Siena Saints) but that’s typical for the Northeast.

Michigander, born and bred

Live in Grand Rapids are now, so we see a few West Michigan Whitecaps games a year.

Before that, hailed from Saginaw area. We would go down to see Lansing Lugnuts games. I love that stadium, the way it’s built down, half underground.

Grew up going to Tiger Stadium every year, and Comerica has nothing, compared to that. Upper deck in Lf or RF was just an awesome cheap seat, at Tiger Stadium. So, I don’t even bother going there anymore, with all the minor league ball, now in the state.

NY/PA

I go to quite a bit of Binghamton Mets games per year as I grew up and live in the area, and being a Mets fan it’s nice to see the up-and-comers.

I’ve been down to Scranton-Wilkes Barre games as well. They were with the Phillies at that point. Unfortunately, the Yanks grabbed S-WB and not the Mets. Would’ve been nice to have the Mets AA and AAA clubs within an hour of me.

I’ve never gone to an Oneonta Tigers game as Detroit is AL and I don’t follow their minors much and don’t have much incentive to go as the park, last time I saw (years ago) was awful.

Syracuse Chiefs games are also only an hour away, and I was hoping the Mets might look here too for their AAA squad this past year. Never been, but I wouldn’t mind going up to a game if Buffalo is in town as the Bison should be loaded with prospects like Davis, Martinez, Tejada, Thole, and Chris “When can I get a chance?” Carter.

Not too much

I live in Bowie, but I only get to about 5 Baysox games a year. I love the fact that they’re a Double A team – that’s my favorite level to watch. Good enough to be pretty darned good, but not so close to the show that they ache to be there. I probably get to minor league games in other stadiums about once every two years or so. I would like to watch the players closely, but frankly, I don’t know enough about the game to really know what to look for, so I go primarily for the atmosphere. I usually take the family with me, when they’re not too embarassed to be seen in public with me.

The wind is in the buffalo.

NC is great for minor league baseball...

Like several of the above posters, I love North Carolina for baseball. I live just outside Charlotte, and within a couple of hours I can easily get to see the Charlotte Knights, Kannapolis Intimidators, Hickory Crawdads, Ashville Tourists, Carolina Mudcats, and Durham Bulls, not to mention great NCAA baseball, UNC, Clemson. So Carolina, ect.

I haven’t gone to nearly as many as i used to since I have a toddler, but she’s just about at the age where she’ll enjoy the ballpark. I used to go to 20+ a year, last 2 years it’s only been a a handful.

I enjoy AA the most for the prospects, although Durham for the stadium and AAA experience is hard to beat.
