Well
Plenty of those guys listed were 2009 draft picks with little or no professional AB’s to go by. That leaves you with their pre-draft scouting repots to go by and that can be tough. Heatchcott, Williams,Profar, Givens, and some others are all extremely young with huge potential upside. I’d be willing to bet at least one on that list makes an all star game. I just wouldn’t bet which one :)
re
Everett Williams- Jaque Jones comp. Similar builds, similar tools. Both swing it lefty, both are athletic, but not fast enough to handle CF fulltime. Both are shorter guys that have pop, but not huge power.
Heathcott- Josh Hamilton is the extreme upside. Very athletic lefty swingers. Good speed, great arm strength, power.
Trayvon Robinson- Don’t think he’ll hit enough to start, but he has speed and some power, so a up and down career as a 4th OFer/AAAA’er could be in the works. Like a Reggie Abercrombie.
a few remarks
From everything I read Williams has a lot of raw power, just needs to tap into it.
Also saying Hamilton is an extreme upside for any player is usually over stating it, Josh was amazing as a kid and if Heathcott really did have that upside he would of gone much higher. I saw an interview with Heathcott in which he compared himself to Rusty Greer, which actually looks pretty good.
Trayvon may end up being just a 4th OF type, as he needs to prove he can hit outside of the Cal league. I think he has a bit better chances though than Ambercrombie as he has a much better eye at the plate.
at 5’9" is remains to be seen how much power Williams has/will have. None of his other tools grade out to plus, so he will have to display plus raw power in order to avoid the “tweener” lable. Again, good pop for a short guy, above ave but not great speed, plate discipline issues, weak arm…. sounds a lot like Jaque Jones.
a Rusty Greer comp isn’t what Yankee fans probably want to hear, but Greer was very good for about a 5 year stretch. But then you are assuming that he develops Greer’s best tool, which was his plate discipline, and none of the reports I’ve read on Slade has mentioned it being a plus tool. Also, I think you sell Slade’s speed short, which is a plus-plus tool according to BA. Greer never stole more than 8 bases in any year during his career. Plus Greer’s arm was considered ave-below, while Slade throws mid 90s heat and many wanted him as a pitcher.
I enjoy watching the toolsie types so I hope Trayvon develops, but I wouldn’t bet on it. He still has a ways to go before he even reaches the level that Abercrombie attained. As you said, he has better plate discipline than Reggie, but he has to prove his power was more than just a Cal league mirage
