Montero vs Jennings vs Heyward

I'm in a dynasty points league and have been offered a trade where I can pick two of Montero, Jennings and Heyward.  I'm pretty locked on Heyward, but not sure on the Montero vs Jennings...  I do have Mauer, so even if Montero sticks a C for a few years, he'll still be a DH on my team...  The league does use LF/CF/RF and I have Granderson at CF.  So the greater "need" maybe Jennings...but is Montero's bat just that much better?  Any thoughts?

The two best are Heyward and Montero

but if you can’t play him at catcher, Id probably go ahead and take Heyward and Jennings.

+1

i voted heyward and montero… and montero is probably the choice even if you can’t play him at catcher, but if you need steals, and the fact that i don’t like the direction granderson’s numbers are headed, i could see you picking Heyward and Jennings…. but montero has the chance to be so good that even at DH he could be more valuable than jennings

Yeah...

I mean, the smart move is Heyward and Montero… and that’s who I would take. If you really like Jennings though, Im not sure you’re really losing that much value going that way. I guess you could take Montero and try to trade him later… but just as soon take Jennings then have to deal with that.

I see points league now… shifts it towards Montero, then CF eligibility (depending on your rules) shifts it back to Jennings/too close to worry about.

Its really hard to go wrong here.

I can’t help but wonder what you’re giving up…

giving up...

Well…I’ll also be getting Beckett and Jeter as part of the deal, but those guys don’t come as options, just the prospects. All for the low low price of one easy installment of Hanley Ramirez. Tough to give up the 2nd best player in baseball at a premium position who is only 26 in a dynasty league…but that package is hard to refuse…

Ok,

so you’re getting Beckett/Jeter/Heyward/Montero for Ramirez?

I’d want either a younger SP or a better field player than Jeter. As good as Heyward and Montero could be, you’re still giving up the 2nd best fantasy player hands down.

Last year, I gave up Verlander/Reyes/Matsuz for Hanley/Jennings (granted, this is prior to Reyes’s injury and Jennings going nuts).

I think you’re getting below market value. I believe people should pay a premium for certain players (generally Pujols, Lincecum, Ramirez, Arod) because they are so much better than the guys who are behind them in positional rankings let alone overall rankings.

dont agree

Hanley is great but he’s one guy. Heyward and Montero are two potential MVP bats, Beckett is a top pitcher and Jeter has at least 3 more years of being a quality SS. The name of the game in fantasy is to be better then the other team, and If Heyward and Montero become 75% of their ceiling, they are combined better then Hanley, never mind including Jeter and Beckett.

by LostMess on Feb 10, 2010 12:32 AM EST up reply actions

Lost Mess,

let remind you of potential MVP bats like Delmon Young, Alex Gordon, Ruben Mateo, et al…

Beckett is a middling pitcher for fantasy purposes. Jeter had one of his best years last year and is do to regress because of age/wear and tear.

Combining players doesn’t make sense as you have to bench players in order to play others.

Frankly, a 26 year old superstar at a premium position is worth much more than a group of players who either won’t produce this year or will have to develop in a couple of years.

It was an accident

I meant to vote for Montero and Heyward.

There were 4 others,

which is kind of absurd…

the way I could see it

Montero could play catcher and Jennings has lots of stolen base potential.

by Daniel Berlyn on Feb 9, 2010 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

Montero staying at catcher is pretty slim, and

Jennings over Heyward doesn’t make sense in a points league. There are more points for HR/RBI than SB… both will be within 10-15 runs of each other on an average year, so that’s not too much of a difference.

If Montero were a surefire catcher like Mauer, McCann, Martinez, then I’d say sure it’s possible, but since he’s probably going to be a DH, and has already been stated that he would be used as a DH, he has less value. With Granderson already at CF, there is less need for Jennings.

Regardless, Jennings value is considerably less in a points league than that of Heyward.

So absurd

can you believe people actually have opinions different than yours!?

come on,

would you take Jennings over Heyward? I could see a case for Heyward over Montero or Jennings over Montero, but it’s absurd to take Heyward over Jennings…

I’m a huge Jennings fan, and I’m saying that I wouldn’t do it. I believe it’s absurd…

Actually,

in this situation I believe that your question is absurd.

Perhaps rereading the post above- he has Mauer at C (who I would trade because I think this is as high as Mauer’s value ever gets in FANTASY POINTS LEAGUES) and would exclusively use Montero at DH (who might not see time in the show this year consistently or until perhaps the end of the season). Heyward and Jennings are both guaranteed playing time this season, so it becomes a matter of who would produce more in avg/runs/hr/rbi/sb overall. I believe Heyward is the better overall player and will produce more this season and probably beyond barring major injury in terms of fantasy. Jennings value lies in him being a CF (where he already has Granderson); however, in most points leagues, SB’s maintain less value. This makes Jennings value drop. There is no defensive value in most fantasy leagues so that’s moot.

You understand we’re talking about a fantasy trade here so my opinion makes more sense as to where your silly comment makes you look like more of an ass.

I did...

In a fantasy league, I see Montero as having elite power and Jennings have elite SB production. I also believe both hit around .300. I think the combo of Montero and Jennings will actually combine for better counting stats than Heyward with either of them.

My bad...

I was thinking 5X5 league when I made the vote, I see now it is a points league. Forget it, I would vote Montero and Heyward.

Exactly,

In a points league it’s a completely different story.

Just curious

Who are you giving up that allows you to get 2 of the top 5 prospects in baseball?

by valley on Feb 9, 2010 9:36 PM EST reply actions

You already have a CF

And Jennings is pretty well locked in CF in Tampa. He’s a better defender than Upton. So since you’d be playing both Jennings and Montero at DH, you have to go with a Heyward/Montero combo.
