Andre Ethier's Defense

This topic has been debated for a while... how good is Andre Ethier's defense in RF? Ethier has had one strong season in RF(7.6 UZR/150 in 2007) and two poor seasons(-9.1 UZR/150 in 2008 and -17.7 UZR/150 in 2009). Watching Ethier in RF, I personally dont think he is that bad. He has the arm to play the position, but UZR seems to think that he is horrible. He proved in 2007 that he can play RF very well, while playing over 100 games...

So, which is the real Ethier? Is his defense the 07 version, or the 08-09 version? On a few Dodger blogs, I have seen people demand that he play LF long term, while I have seen others consistently point to his 07 performance as a way to show he can play the position very well and stay in RF longterm. Which is the real Ethier-both short and long term? Will he eventually be forced to LF when prospects like Trayvon Robinson, Andrew Lambo or Xavier Paul are ready?

will say this.....

i don’t follow the dodgers and don’t pay attention to their players scouting reports or metrics, but….

when he played at arizona st he came to us as a CFer but his defense in the OF was so bad he was playing primarily 1b for us by his junior year

Oh, he isnt a CF

But I do think he can play RF long term. He doesnt have the athleticism or speed to play CF.

The reason Im curious as to other’s thoughts is because he had a really strong year, then two horrible years… i think he is somewhere in between, about average, but Im curious as to what others think

again...

his defense in the outfield was so bad at Arizona St that he was moved to 1b, not just bad in CF, but so bad he couldn’t even man a corner.

also, for what its worth, he was one of the least liked star players while at Arizona St over the last decade than anyone else I can remember

extremely cocky

rubbed alot of people the wrong way. What would be generally called “an asshole”

He must have improved in the minors

enough for the As and the Dodgers to keep him in the OF.

I really dont think his attitude is a problem. He was one of the most liked guys in the clubhouse. He is a fairly quiet guy and doesnt seem to be pompous at all…

What did he do in AZ?

maybe he has matured...

It has been seven years and there is a big difference between 28 and 21.

He was in general a arogant, cocky, and kind of a dick. There are probably 2-3 of those in every MLB clubhouse, but its rarer in the college ranks were there seems to be a lot more comradery, especially at programs like Arizona St that does a good job of running out bad seeds early.

He wasn’t arrested for fighting or rape or anything so I’m not saying he was a bad citizen. As someone who has been extremely close to the ASU program for more than 20 years I can say that I can think of only a handful of players that were disliked as much as Ethier however

I guess it was him maturing

because he is know one of the more liked Dodgers, on and off the field…

Travis Buck has an ego too

Thoughts on Eric Sogard? Poor man’s pedroia ?

Sogard

Sogard is a really good kid, a real hustler and the type that will run through a wall for you.

Buck was a good kid too.

whoops

not to reply to my own post, but the Pedro/Sogard comp

It wouldn’t even be fair to call Sogard a poor man’s Pedroia. Pedroia was just so much better on every level than Sogard. I think a good comp for Sogard would be Brooks Conrad, a Devil from 99-01 that has had a few cups of coffee in the Bigs. Both play 2b, are on the small-side (5’9" ish) that swings it from the left side of the plate with surprising pop. Neither are big on tools but are gritty gamers
