Kyle Blanks

How does everyone think Kyle Blanks will do this year? Is he going to shine this year? What do you think his stats will be? Will he have a starting job in the outfield before Adrian Gonzalez gets traded? Pleas let me know.

Blanks

I’d be shocked if he doesn’t have a starting job in LF to start the year.
My guess is he will put up a line of .275/.370/.510 with about 25 Hr’s

Very Optimistic

First year I see his batting average a bit lower, and he won’t get as many walks.
Maybe a .255/335/465 line.
Still a good 800 OPS.

i also don’t think he will be anywhere close to a 900 ops in just his 2nd year, first full season. that would put him on par with the all time greats. as you mentioned, a 800 ops would be a very strong year. right handed power hitters get eaten alive in that ball park, but 22-25 homers would be attainable imo.

i could be numbers in his prime approaching the original 275/370/510, maybe a bump higher in power numbers if he leaves san diego

Petco is harder on LH bats.

Given the normal winds, hitting the ball to LF is much easier then RF, but it still requires more power then most parks. But Right handed hitters tend to be much more productive then left handed hitters in PETCO.

.269/.341/.473

I see a line close to this. 26 HR if he gets 50 ABs. Nothing wrong with putting up an .814 OPS in Petco.

you bet

as a fantasy owner i have to be optimistic. But really I looked up his fangraphs projections and my guess was similar to Bill James projection for Blanks. Blanks was handled very well, was not rushed at all and I see him having a pretty early peak.

by JJACK on Feb 6, 2010 10:39 PM EST reply actions

also

just looking at the stats, Blanks put up a .288/.393/.635 batting line in the 2nd half last year. That takes away his first 50 plate appearances where he hit a lowly .159/.260/.227.

Could be a stud

Some seem to think he will develop into another Price Fielder.

Not THAT Much Power

That kind of power is almost impossible to have. Only player in the minors who has that power is Stanton. And maybe Cody Johnson.

who are these people that think that?

by ScottAZ on Feb 7, 2010 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

Kyle Blanks having Prince Fielder potential

Not that I’m a cbs sportsline fan, but here is one. There are others I’ve read. You can do the research. To go along with Fielder comparison, Blanks is something Fielder isn’t. He’s fast and not fat.

Blanks, long considered the Padres’ top prospect, got a quick promotion last June after learning to play the outfield and proved he could do something few hitters can do: hit home runs in PETCO Park. That’s what happens for 6-foot-6, 285-pound behemoths: Outfield fences suddenly don’t seem as deep. Blanks put on his power display, hitting 10 home runs in only 148 at-bats, despite his 22 years of age. Imagine what he’ll do when he hits his prime. He was just beginning to get comfortable, hitting .270 in August, when he strained the arch in his right foot, and the Padres, acting carefully, chose to sit him the rest of the way. But he did enough during his short stint to show he has serious potential in Fantasy, perhaps as soon as this year. He might need a couple years to find his footing, especially given his young age, but he has Prince Fielder-like potential. The chance he breaks out sooner rather than later makes him well worth a late-round pick. (Updated 1/21/10)

Well

I wouldn’t put much weight if any in what CBS tells you fantasy wise. When Prince was 23 he was having a 50hr season in the majors, very few have that power.

Richie Sexson seems like a much more likely best case scenario

Kyle Blanks

Watch these FREE highlights of Blanks on MLB:

http://mlb.mlb.com/search/media.jsp?player_id=452035

Of course, these are his shining moments but this guy has UNBELIEVABLE POWER. After watching these recently, I’m convinced Blanks is the Real Deal and going to pound the ball. He played OF decently last year and if you watch his INSIDE-THE-PARK HOME RUN, he has some wheels.

Blanks’ doesn’t just pull his blasts either. I’m on the West Coast, watch a lot of Dodgers but didn’t catch many Padres games because they were a little uninteresting to watch (didn’t say boring). After watching about 40-50 of Blanks’ ABs, I’m convinced he’s going to hit 28-30+ this year, easy and 35+ in the next few years.

Blanks HR Chart

It’s true he’s not just pulling his HR, and he’s giving ’em all pretty good rides.

by PissedMick on Feb 7, 2010 8:42 AM EST up reply actions

west coast guy

Blanks is freaking huge.

good swing. plus power. good plate discipline.
take a minute to watch the highlights of Blanks.

I’m waiting for mike stanton to reach the league cause with him i always hear plus plus power.

by hirambocachica on Feb 7, 2010 3:28 PM EST reply actions

Blanks has 50+ power

He probably has more power than Stanton but he’ll be playing his career in Petco, and he isn’t as publicized because he is a padre (all their prospects get underrated; and when BA ranks a system next to last people actually believe them and assume they lack talent… they’re really in the top 10).

But as for Blanks first full season in Petco… it’s probably safe to guess 25 but personally I think he’s going to hit more than 30. The guy has a chance at being better than Agon. And yes that statment is serious. As for Fantasy baseball; I expect Blanks to be a top 50 OF option at worst, and I could honestly see him cracking the top 5 in performance 2010. He’s not going to be good but great.

  1. sleeper in all formats because there is a great chance he might not even get drafted in your league.

by johnnycomelately9 on Feb 8, 2010 4:46 AM EST reply actions

so

are you saying Stanton’s power tool is lower than a 50? Most people would agree that he’s the closest to a pure 80 that exists in the minors today

by ScottAZ on Feb 8, 2010 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

I think he meant

“Blanks has 50+ HR power” rather using the 20-80 scale.

by mrkupe on Feb 8, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

so much optimism...

he clearly has a ton of power, but he’s very young and probably won’t hit 40 or 50 HRs right away in Petco Park.

I’d say if given 500 ABs .268/.347/.473. At first maybe 25 HRsmaximum.

Worried about low line drive rates

Hits ALOT of fly balls in a park where enough may not go out. Couple that with below average baserunning and I could see something along the lines of .245/.320/.450 with below average defense in LF. With more time I could see .285/.380/.520, but, for now, I’ll temper my excitement

I can’t believe how high people are on this guy reading the comments on this page.

by alskor on Feb 8, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Funny

All this optimism, yet no mention that he K’d at a 37.2% clip last year in his brief stint. Even during his small sample size hot 100 ab’s that people seem to enjoy pointing out, he K’d over 30% of the time. Yes he can take a walk, but I’d be aware of the adjustments he needs to make with his swing and making more contact.

AVG is going to be much lower than people are expecting. I dont buy his defense in LF either. Im pretty sure that will be on the negative side of the ledger.

Gonna be a lot of disappointed people here.

On Blanks from a So-Cal

All the talk on San Diego sports talk radio is that with Headley moving to 3rd that Blanks will have the starting job in left until AGon is traded (which unfortunately seems a forgone conclusion.

I don’t the the comp to Fielder in the power dept is unrealistic. He hits it far with a less than max effort swing. The guy is an offensive lineman without the gut.

A good comp right now I think is Adam Dunn. If he can improve where Dunn has failed to the he could have Prince type value, if not then being an Adam Dunn type player is still pretty damn good.
