MLB 2010: Smoak, Carter, or Davis?

Based solely on offensive output for the upcoming season, who puts up the best numbers?

It appears that all have a chance to see regular playing time at their given position but.....many factors to consider.

- Texas may have a logjam at 1B which could take away ab's from both Smoak and Davis.

- Smoak needs to have an outstanding Spring just to get into the Rangers lineup (mid-season call up?)

-  Carter...I honestly don't know enough about him but continue to hear that his power is absolutely for real.

So for 2010, who puts up the best numbers? All comments and opinions welcome.

Thanks...

Davis, pretty clearly

Davis is at least a reasonable bet to hit 20 hrs, and based on what he did on his second trip to the majors, hopefully keep his average well on the right side of .250. Both Carter and Smoak start the season in the minors, and neither is guaranteed to come up that early or to rake immediately when they do come up.. 2011 may be an entirely different situation, but strictly for 2010 I think Davis is a pretty clear call over either of these guys, as good prospects as they are.

For 2010 it has to be Davis based on playing time.

Assuming this is a fantasy question, the downside is he’s a below average option at 1B who will provide plus power but be a drag in AVG. Could still be a nice late round value, but I wouldn’t expect big things from him. I think Evan Grant and others have speculated Smoak could surpass him with a good spring, though most don’t expect Smoak to be ready until at least halfway through the season. They also looked into acquiring Mike Lowell… which should give you an indication they’re not tremendously high on Davis, IMO. If Davis ends up in a platoon all bets are off.

Indeed

Smoak’s probably a July callup at best unless he absolutely wrecks shit in spring training. Davis will get playing time, he’s your best immediate option.

Carter...

I don’t believe in Davis too much and i don’t think Smoak gets called up until later in the season.

Carter won't be called up till mid-may soonest

and even then, more likely he will be called up late 2010.

I'm not sure he gets called up at all

Unless he shows he can handle the outfield.

I think Barton proves he belongs this year.

For 2010

Chris Davis… I would recommend, however, closely following the Smoak situation to make sure he is indeed around a June or Sept. callup, and not a May one. If Smoak got the call in May, then I would say him. For Carter, he is most likely a June or Sept callup at this point, but again, if he got the call in May then I would take Carter.

If for some odd reason Smoak and Carter are up in May, then you have a decision to make. Personally I’ll take Smoak in Texas’ lineup/ballpark, but it is close. Perhaps even Max Ramirez could be a wildcard in all this mess as a potential 1B/DH hitter.

Smoak

I think Davis might put up the best counting numbers but with his batting average and K’s his value would be quite low, especially for fantasy baseball. Someone like Branyan would have more value.

I would rather a guy like Smoak that when he does get called up would have a serious impact.

Davis

he’ll do better this year, put up the best numbers total…Smoak and Carter may be great in the long run but may struggle initially, though I see Carter as much more likely to do that than Smoak, but I think Smoak will be okay but won’t break through until 2011 at earliest.
