What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

You guys win. You can keep your little marked-out piece of internet territory. Spend your days communicating via keyboard with people too ugly for the real world and too nerdy for anyone to care, anyway. Your piece of land is here. Mier

Definitely the best position prospect left in my opinion at least. I could see a couple of the pitchers being considered better, but Vizcaino was the only pitcher I had ahead of Mier. I’ll set the O/E at 70 and hope for the under.

by auclairkeithbc on Feb 20, 2010 3:23 PM EST reply actions

Castro

really time for him. I have him and Casey Crosby on the same level, with a slight nod to Crosby…

after he gets on I’m going Wil Myers and then Colome.

also, Brignac needs a tester

by daveh33 on Feb 20, 2010 4:08 PM EST reply actions

real soon

i ranked him #67 on my list, but on this news that i’m hearing about him losing 15 lbs over the winter, i’m bumping him up at least 7 places…. so he’d be right behind Colome/Shelby Miller to me

by daveh33 on Feb 20, 2010 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

just now realized you probably meants thoughts in general

not ’thoughts on where he should go /get on the list"

haha.

I like his bat. I like his wrists. Defensively I am unsure, but he is still a SS, and again, I like the reports that he worked out hard this winter and isn’t going to let his body get the better of him. I liked the pick when they made it, though I wanted Posey. Beckham is still very much a legit prospect with legit tools/talent. He should start getting support

by daveh33 on Feb 20, 2010 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

Brignac/Beckham

BA has Brignac just ahead of Beckham in their Rays top 10, at 5 and 6 respectively. I can see that if Brignac is the one who stays at ss. Of course if Beckham is a 2b it doesn’t ding him all that much, if his bat develops. Or I guess 3b, since the positional adjustment is the same for 2b and 3rd, although you normally think of 3b having more power. I guess he could still play ss but that’s the main concern I have.

by wobatus on Feb 20, 2010 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

the top 10 reports are mostly done by beat writers

or guys who aren’t manuel and callis, who are the main dudes i trust at BA.

by daveh33 on Feb 21, 2010 4:17 AM EST up reply actions

yeah

I noticed that with the systems I am more familiar with, but I thought they at least had to run it past the main BA folks.

by wobatus on Feb 21, 2010 9:02 AM EST up reply actions

Trying to find recent Manuela dn Callis takes

and I keep getting older stuff. Or that Callis prefers Smoak to Beckham, which doesn’t help much. But I’m not trying too hard.

I did see a Goldstein chat where he pointed out there’s a reason Mitchell went, what, 17-18 spots behind Tate. The community list is always an interesting sort of democratic reflection, but we have our own “special interest groups” it seems who effectively lobby for certain guys (not saying that’s bad-I myself don’t have the depth of knowledge of some folks here and this helps bring people to my attention for further study). Looks like Beckham is only just starting to get his push. And since this is John’s show mainly, his opinion (B-) likely starts Beckham off with a bit of a strike, and he isn’t the shiny new toy anymore. Although he’s still actually hasn’t lost all that much sheen.

by sjkqw on Feb 20, 2010 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

holy crap, Brignac isn't on

he just flew by my mind. He is probably going to start getting my vote after Mier and Castro get on. He is in the 40s on my list. Major League ready with + defense, an average hit, power, and baserunning tool, with potential for more hitting and power which would make him incredibly valueable.

well, i voted brett jackson again

no point rehashing things on why. How I have the rest of the board loosely stacked (again, I only consider the names listed, easier on me this way, as I don’t have a separate personal list like many of you)

2. Simon Castro – Plus fastball, potential plus slider, loads of potential, and frame should fill out a bit more. Ceiling’s enormous, made massive improvements this year. The control stands out.

3. Jarrod Parker – I’ve decided to put him in the 3 hole on this vote and likely will ponder voting for him soon (although as noted, I ponder each vote separately and am prone to change my mind, since I don’t have a set list to crib off of). When healthy, this was one of the best arms in the minors. He’s got that much ability. Reason why I can’t put him ahead of Castro – Assuming Castro doesn’t collapse, we’re looking at two arms that will likely be at similar levels in 2011, both with high ceilings, but one coming off injury. Is that too simplistic? Perhaps, but that’s my take.

4. Zach Britton – I almost think he’s a bit underrated. Excellent starting arsenal, fb velo jumped a bit. Some control issues, but nothing serious. I think the stuff played better than people anticipated, and that might be what is leading to some concern on votes for him. As noted, I believe in him as a starter more than Arrieta. Look, not the greatest ceiling in the world, but solid ceiling (best case scenario, I could see a solid #2), solid floor as a lefty with ground ball ability, and solid performance. Just … a very solid prospect, IMO.

5a. Matt Dominguez – The comments on Dominguez have got me changing my opinion.

5b. Alex Colome – Love the ceiling, but show me full season work. Castro has it, and the ceilings are comparable. Hey … it’s how I vote.

7. Jiovanni Mier – I contemplated him over Colome. Is his bat likely as good as what he showed in rookie league? Probably not, but he’s a great glove guy (still remember the comments about how his glove was ahead of Hak-ju Lee’s) who could have a decent bat at a key position.

8-11. Tim Beckham – I haven’t written him off, but he’s got to show it, offensively and defensively, to garner a vote in the 60’s for me.

Shelby Miller – Look, great ceiling. I know. Show me first. That’s just how I am.

Mike Moustakas – Haven’t written him off either. Actually, this might be a tad low. In my head, he feels like a top 80 guy or so.

Mike Trout – A lot to like, but far away, and that’s just how I am on some guys.

Matt Dominguez 9.9%%

i'll ask again

since i only got one decent answer in the other thread.

why is Mier a better prospect than Beckham? the guy goes from having big questions about the bat before the draft to all of a sudden having like no questions apparently. 2 months in the Appy League does not change that. and his glove might be good, but it’s not other worldly good.

i’ll take a potential all-star bat at SS in Beckham. don’t think the glove will be any better than average or so, but the bat could be pretty special at the position.

baseball rules.

by doublestix on Feb 22, 2010 6:13 AM EST reply actions

I would take Mier over Beckham

tentatively for now, because IIRC, the reports on Mier’s glove were excellent. I mean, the reports on Hak-ju Lee’s glove have been very positive … and most reports suggest, IIRC, that Mier’s glove was a couple notches ahead.

If his glove is that special, and Beckham hasn’t produced, offensively or defensively, I’ll take a chance with Mier’s glove if we’re stacking it up right now. No, I don’t think he’s anywhere near as good as his Appy League numbers.

That said, if I have the wrong take on Mier’s glove, then it’s much closer. But … I wouldn’t put either guy in the 60’s, and am thinking they are more, at best, in the 70’s.
