Mock Draft #2 Supplemental Round
I've posted a continuation of my second first round mock draft on my blog. I've made the assumption that Rod Barajas will sign a ML deal with another club before the draft, so the Blue Jays have netted another pick.
Here's an excerpt from the writeup:
33. Houston Astros – DeAndre Smelter, RHP, Tattnall Square Academy (GA) – Having drafted LeVon Washington and Kevin Gausman before this, Smelter fits well into the Astros’ current philosophy of draft workout arms, following in the footsteps of Jordan Lyles and Tanner Bushue. Smelter has huge arm strength, and his big question mark is whether he has the secondary stuff or the endurance to be a starter. His arm strength is unquestioned, though, and perhaps only Stetson Allie has a better pure arm in this class. Previously: NR.
34. Toronto Blue Jays – Peter Tago, RHP, Dana Hills HS (CA) – Tago is currently on that edge between first round pitcher and unpredictable prep arm. He still fits into the category of skinny, projectable prep arm, but his command is quite good. Having already pegged the Blue Jays to pick Manny Machado, a prep arm fits here well. Tago has a high ceiling, and with the regime change in Toronto, it looks like they see the need in picking these kinds of arms, along with a mix of college arms. Previously: NR.
35. Atlanta Braves – Jesse Hahn, RHP, Virginia Tech – The Braves, while traditionally thought of as pure tools developers, have more recently gone to a mix between college and junior college players. With this being the Braves’ first pick in the draft, I think the Braves will try to find a relatively high-upside college arm, and Hahn fits that bill. Hahn has a big arm, but a reliever stigma, and he’ll have to work to keep that away this spring. Previously: #13.
36. Boston Red Sox – Jedd Gyorko, 2B, West Virginia – The man without a defensive home continues to show up as a solid all-around hitter. I have the Red Sox going with a prep arm in Stetson Allie earlier in the first round, so I would expect a more conservative pick here. Gyorko looks like he’ll be a solid MLB hitter without much work, and while his defense is generally bad in the infield, he might be able to work himself into a solid contributor. Previously: #29.
37. Los Angeles Angels – Sammy Solis, LHP, San Diego – Much like last year, I expect the Angels to use a fair number of their multiple early picks on arms with good upside. That yielded Tyler Skaggs, Garrett Richards, Tyler Kehrer, and Pat Corbin a year ago. Solis is a guy with an injury history that doesn’t involve his left arm, and he stands to be a candidate to move up quickly from here with a good spring. This would be a pick that makes a lot of sense. Previously: NR.

I love your Mock Drafts Andy but......
If the Braves take another GD pitcher I’ll be pissed! The Braves need IF prospects and I know they shouldn’t draft for need but take the BPA but they are slim at 3B, SS and 2B and when Chipper retires there is nobody to step in at 3B, if Yunel gets hurt for an extended period of time after this season(knock on wood) who’s going to take his place? This is Infante’s last season as a Brave, Diory Hernandez can hit a beach ball, Brandon Hicks has an awesome glove and some pop but can’t make consistent contact and Mychal Jones is in Low A and plays below average D at SS anyway. Bottomline the Braves need IF prospects.
couldn't have said it better myself...
Garin Cecchini – Barbe HS (LA) would be perfect, actually. big kid (6’3", 200), plays SS in HS but projects to 3B and can MASH.
Josh Rutledge – Alabama is a possibility here.
Rick Hague – Rice as well.

I her what you are saying
but you cannot just skip on someone like Hahn. I have seen him consistently top 20 and top 10 is 1 place. You can always trade a pitching prospect for an infielder with the the surplus
Cecchini is very good, but I expect him to go early.
Um
Yes you can. Hahn may have a power arm but his numbers have been horrendous at VT. I know the Braves like drafting projects but all of his numbers have been poor and to have such a good FB he doesn’t K many people AT ALL. I know he may have great potential but the Braves have so many guys like that now. They could draft arms in later rounds but like I said the Braves need infielders and good ones fast! When they drafted Anthony Rendon in 08 out of HS in the 27RD I wish they would have made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
this
+100000000000000000000
Hahn might be the most overrated prospect in this draft (outside of, well, Harper simply because people want him to be a superstar from day 1 and he’s going to struggle (Hamilton part 2?)) and the Braves NEED, not want, but NEED, positional players, particularly infielders and PARTICULARLY a 3B.
You can ignore the projectible power arm (seeing we are WELL stocked in that department in Rookie and A Ball) for projectible bats if you are the Braves. as a matter of fact, we need to.

Sam Dyson
If he can put together a solid year production-wise and come back to full strength following minor surgery, he could be a stud. My only concern is whether his command will allow him to remain a starter. He carries his velocity deep into games with his effortless delivery. Ball looks like Feliz’s coming out of his hand. I’ve seen him consistently throw 98 in the eighth inning. His slider is a wipeout pitch and his change-up flashes signs of above average potential. I’m glad to A’s didn’t throw more money his way last year
I never thought Gyorko was that miserable at 2B that he had no shot at sticking and certainly didn’t think he would be unable to find a home in the infield. I definitely don’t see him as a SS and knew he wouldn’t be able to handle that position moving forward but I guess I don’t see why people are knocking him so much if they believe in the bat? If his defense is that bad and people question his bat than he shouldn’t even be in consideration for the first 5 rounds.
Nice write up
A lot of guys that I like projected in this round (Smelter, Tago, Blair, Solis, Grimm, Gibbs, Parker).
For whats its worth...
the Dbacks front office are apparently very high on McGuire and Paxton. If they perform up to expectations this spring without injury I would be surprised if they don’t draft one of them
Smelter has a great arm
But wow those mechanics just look all over the place.
Great write up!
