Rank These SP Prospects Strictly Based on Ceiling...

My goal here is to find out of these pitchers which have the best stuff, and at their ceiling have ace potential. I haven't had a chance to watch most of them and for some that are from this year's draft, I really don't have ML numbers to go by, so any help would be much appreciated.

Casey Crosby

Tyler Matzek

Jacob Turner

Julio Teheran

Chris Withrow

Aaron Crow

Tanner Scheppers

Alex Colome

Mike Leake

Arodys Vizcaino

Zach Wheeler

Mike Minor

Strictly based on stuff,

I’d say Matzek has to be #1 on this list.

What about for your top 5?

by DJSlam on Feb 18, 2010 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

I'd go....

Matzek
Turner
Crosby
Teheran
Colome
Vizcaino
Wheeler
Withrow
Scheppers
Crow
Leake
Minor

+1

I like this order, though I’d put Scheppers at the very bottom – I keep hearing he could end up a reliever in the end.

by FI2 on Feb 18, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

You keep hearing that...

because of injury concerns. ‘Ceiling’ he should be #1 or #2.

by rothe on Feb 18, 2010 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

Good point...

I’d move him up on my list before down. He does have #1 potential if his change comes around and his shoulder stays healthy. Most guys on this list have #1 upside/ceiling though. Crow, Leake and Minor are really the only ones who have no chance.

by Kerm on Feb 18, 2010 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Looks good

I’d move Wheeler down, but I like most of these placements.

If all you care about is ceiling, I’d think Teheran/Scheppers have to be close to the top. All of them are pretty good and most have insane stuff but I’d probably put those 2 near the top with some combination of Turner, Matzek, and Crosby following them (probably in that order for me).

by jfish26101 on Feb 18, 2010 3:58 PM EST reply actions

Well...

put the guy with the best stuff at #1. I’d probably go Croaby at #1 since he’s a high velocity lefty.

by Havok1517 on Feb 18, 2010 3:59 PM EST reply actions

Matzek

is pretty close in velocity. I think he was throwing upper 90’s prior to the draft.

by Kerm on Feb 18, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Matzek...

has a higher ceiling because he combines the velocity with command and other plus pitches.

by joegonzo on Feb 18, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

hmmm, based on ceiling

Scheppers
Chris Withrow
Tyler Matzek
Arodys Vizcaino
Casey Crosby
Julio Teheran
Alex Colome
Aaron Crow
Jacob Turner
Zach Wheeler
Mike Leake
Mike Minor

Interesting....

You have Withrow very high and Turner pretty low compared to Kerms list.

Turner

Leake

Not getting a lot of love this offseason. I get the sense he’s quite underrated and will surprise a lot of people this season

I like him alot...

but this is about upside and he is going against some guys with a ton of upside. I could see him being a good number 3 and getting there really quickly, but guys like Scheppers could be much more.

by joegonzo on Feb 18, 2010 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

Right.

If this was as post about floor I think Leake would be #1.

by WrenFGun on Feb 18, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

I too like Leake, but in an upside ranking he will get punished.

by Jeff Reese on Feb 18, 2010 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

Hudson/Mussina

Those are the comparisons I have heard. Funny how the guy with one of the lowest ceilings arguably has one of the highest floors.

by rupertoooo on Feb 19, 2010 6:21 AM EST up reply actions

I'll take a stab at it, the majority are real close though

Matzek
Teheran
Turner
Crosby
Scheppers
Colome
Withrow
Vizcaino
Wheeler
Crow
Leake
Minor
