Cliche prospect comparisons
Doesn't it seem that every prospect is compared to the same 4-5 players? What baseball prospect comparisons are you tired of? For example:
EVERY athletic black OFer for some pop and speed is thrown the "Mike Cameron" tag.
EVERY lefty is thrown the "Tom Glavine" tag, unless he throws under 90mph and then he gets the "Jamie Moyer" tag.
The new one I'm seeing is any black player that can play more than one position is given the "Chone Figgins" tag. Just in the past few issues of BA I've seen it given to Eric Patterson and Mycal Jones.
Traditionally you could always find a "Roger Clemens" tag thrown on any big high school righty from Texas. Before Clemens it was a "Nolan Ryan" tag. With Clemens' problems does it now become a "Josh Beckett" tag?
What else?

Compared to Sandoval is pretty new.

No
I’ve never seen anyone compared to Kruk, who is, by the way, from my fine state of WV.
lol
I dropped a John Kruk comp on Jaff Decker about a week ago.

1B prospect with good approach, 20-HR power
Mark Grace. Then John Olerud. Then Lyle Overbay.
+1
Logan Morrison, Kevin Youkilis, and James Loney are all guys I have heard compared to those guys.
yeah
I’ll admit it I compared Freddie Freeman to Jhon Olerud
Also I remember Mientkiewicz getting comparisons to Mark Grace 8-10 years ago….
Baseball America ranked the Minnesota Twins as the 7th best minor league Org. in Baseball !!!! - that is good news...

Small guys getting compared to Pedroia and Eckstein always irritates me
Any comp to Roy Halladay, Ryan Howard, Greg Maddux or Jamie Moyer should result in a caning if you ask me. Might as well compare them to Wakefield or Niekro, people.
I hear...
Adam Dunn thrown around a lot for big guys with a lot of power.
Pedro Martinez for short pitchers who throw hard.
Joe Mauer for every catcher that is big for the position.
Carlos Beltran for toolsy latin american outfielders.
John Lackey for tall right handers.
There are a lot more too. I really hear the Pedroia one for small players too much as mentioned above.
Juan Pierre
Any guy with speed and no power = Juan Pierre
Any short infielder with surprising pop for his size = Rafael Furcal
Any big power hitter who strikes out alot, especially if black = Ryan Howard
Any catcher with plus power = Mike Piazza
Any catcher with plus OBP ability = Jason Kendal
Any 2B with power who can’t field = Dan Uggla (used to be Jeff Kent)
+1 on Pierre
I really believe no matter what Ben Revere ever does he’ll never come out of the Juan Pierre shadow that follows him around everywhere (thanks Sickles’ – I joke)
another one for a big lefty starter:
Andy Petitte

Vlad Guerrero for Dominicans with no discipline
Fred McGriff for large black first basemen
Randy Johnson for tall white hard-throwing lefties
Omar Vizquel for any glove-based IFA shortstop
I think Ryan Howard has clearly eclipsed McGriff for "overused comp for big black 1B" ...
Shawn Spencer: "I’m receiving a transmission from your husband. Really more of a voicemail, if I'm being honest. A status update. Perhaps a twitter."
Burton Guster: "I believe it’s called a tweet."
Shawn Spencer: "There’s no way I’m saying that."
Not really...
the same thing but, my pet-peeve is guys who compare players who bat or pitch from different sides of the plate – so annoying – the actual purpose of the comp is to give a visual and reasonably close similarity of the players skills.
By the way, a few years have gone by and those people who were annoyed with having Chris Young of Arizona and Cam Maybin of the Marlins compared to Cameron – they would now be extatic to have a career like Cameron’s eh?
By the way, take a look at Aroldis Chapman sometime guys and tell me if he isnt extremely similar to Randy Johnson – thesize, stuff, erraticness and left-handedness. The big question there is if Aroldis will have Randy’s DRIVE to suceed? Its that combined with his special talent that made him great. I doubt it but there arent many whoi have even the size and stuff to start with and he does.
Funny that you bring up the Young/Cameron comparison...
The low average and ability to hit for power scream Cameron, though he lacks the glove/defensive skills that Cameron possesses. It’s actually not that bad of a comparison.
I just thought it was funny you brought it up since a friend and I were discussing this today over lunch.
"When Justin Upton faces Lincecum, I think Christ might appear in the heavens, and the world will end." -JakeFree
That IS funny
Still though, Young would KILL for Cameron’s career at this point right? Cammy did have a year lke Young’s 2009 early in his career and bounced back from it. By the way man, Young is a FINE centerfielder.
Also funny is Maybin reminds me of Cameron MORE – even though Im not supposed to say so :-) They even look alike to me.
