need some keeper advice
hello. i need some help on who to hold on to next season. 12 team keeper league, standard roto, with 10 bats/2 utility spots active. we keep 8 players, plus the youngins (who are free for a few years).
sold out last year, so i've got lots of kids...and lots of extra picks next year...but still managed a top 3 finish/$$$.
4 no-doubt keepers: Miguel Cabrera, Robinson Cano, Josh Hamilton, Mark Teixeira.
Free kids: Neftali Feliz, Stephen Strasburg, Dayan Viciedo, Logan Morrison, Jenrry Mejia, Starlin Castro, Aroldis Chapman. (Obviously, not all of them will be helping me next season...for various reasons. I've got quite a few other prospects who are years away from the show as well...like sano, profar, sanchez, banuelos, singleton, etc.)
Anyways, i've got to pick my other 4 keepers from these 10 names:
Jose Bautista = a one year wonder?
Carlos Beltran = barely relevant last couple years.
Chone Figgins = disappeared in Seattle.
Alexei Ramirez = ok, but Castro is free.
Andres Torres = nice '10, but very replaceable.
Matt Wieters = will he ever materialize?
Phil Hughes = #3 SPs are easily drafted.
Joe Nathan = should be back closing.
Jake Peavy = hurt...out until May/June.
Johan Santana = hurt...out until June/July.
Not the best list of names. But like i said...i sold out for kids/prospects (their free yrs) and extra draft picks. Anyhow, if possible, plz lmk which 4 you'd keep (from those 10) and why.
Fwiw, this is how i'm leaning. Dump Alexei, w/ Starlin being free. Dump Torres. Dump Peavy & Santana. Not sure when either will be back, or how well they'll return in the summer. Dump Hughes. Leaning to holding Nathan, in all honesty. If Feliz keeps his closer roll, i won't have to worry about saves for quite some time in our draft. (The league tends to grossly overpay/draft for saves.) Still believe in Wieters, though i'm not sure why. And @ least Bautista's done something for me lately. Which leaves a coin flip between Figgins & Beltran.
In other words...i'm not really sure wtf to do w/ these last 4 keeper spots...so i'm seeking advice. Thanks in advance for any help.

Wieters isn't even a question
He’ll be the 5th or 6th C drafted in a lot of leagues, even though he hasn’t broken out. Value is value and upside still matters. If he busts again, you can always pick up some bum like Olivo or Buck or Jaso who comes out of nowhere to put up above average C numbers.
Castro shouldn’t effect your decision on Ramirez. SS is insanely shallow, and if you can get a guy who puts up decent Util numbers that would be great trade bait to other teams stuck with Scutaro or worse. Your team is better with him than with Beltran or Figgins.
I’d also keep Bautista and Nathan from that list.
This
except I’d take Hughes over Nathan. (which means actually the same as brok515’s list, but I like octashields reasoning.) Nathan just turned 36, coming off TJ, and has Capps behind him to take over if he struggles. I’d take the Ks/Ws/upside of Hughes.

thanks, OctaShields. appreciate the advice.
fwiw, this is why i wanted a different set of eyes…and a varying opinion. 1st paragraph…totally agree. 2nd paragraph…you’re absolutely right…and that’s what i was missing. SS is shallow. Alexei is one of my best 8, and entering his prime (playing for a long term contract)…so w/ 2 util spots, why not keep him. and like you said…having the xtra SS could be great trade bait mid-season.
figgins is somewhat easy for me to drop, though i always struggle w/ SBs. he should improve this year though, and will be back @ 3B where he’s obviously more comfortable. and for some reason beltran’s more difficult for me, despite the last couple years. cant shake the feeling that he/reyes/etc will “man-up” under the new mets regime…especially carlos, if he’s playing for his next contract. that said, OF is the easiest position to draft and get decent production.
anyhow, thanks again.
Is Bautista eligible at 3B?
If he is, then he is a must-keep for you, along with Wieters. I always loved Nathan, but the guy is getting up there in years and is coming off a major injury. I’d keep Hughes over Nathan at this point. I too like Alexei – he would be my 4th keep.
Yanks
Could you give me some set up into the format your league uses? I am looking to start my own league and found the basic set up of your league to be right in line with what I am looking for. Thanks.
