Bob Feller Clocked at 98.6 MPH
Newsreel footage of Bob Feller clocked at 98.6 MPH in 1946, using the most accurate machine possible at the time. That was the measured speed crossing home plate. On a modern gun, that would be over 100 MPH.

Was that smoke at 0:28 or sand in the air?

Physics of ball flight
My freshman year of college our pitching coach spent a lot of time talking about how hitters perceive velocity. He mentioned over and over again that, on average, a baseball will slow down about 1 mile per hour for every 7 feet it travels through the air. I don’t know if that’s true or not or how accurate it is, but I never had a reason to doubt the man. So if you even think that’s remotely accurate that would mean that Feller was throwing around 105 MPH right there. At least that’s how it would be measured today, since radar guns clock at top velocity.
thanks for posting that
Feller was a great baseball player and an even better American. love the old footage
