Colvin

I thought he was more under the radar and he would be behind Corset and May. Could be a big break out in 2011?

by John Kelly on Dec 13, 2010 1:06 PM EST reply actions

He could...

His fastball is right up there with Cosart and May. He also had a brutal April that skewed his numbers.

I really like this system

It’s just loaded with upside guys who could explode Dom Brown style. I’d take Cosart’s upside over Colvin and Singleton, but they’re pretty much toss-ups at this point.

Most impressive scouting department in baseball? Hoping Anthopolous’ regime can find similar success with toolsy high upside athletes.

by The_Bunk on Dec 13, 2010 1:25 PM EST reply actions

I think what I always find remarkable with this system is they generally aren’t pay a ton of overslot money (at least perception) for these guys. They don’t all work out, but I’m not sure they’re handcuffing themselves either.

What's the word on Singleton?

Can anyone summarize what they say about him?

by rdf8585 on Dec 13, 2010 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Nothing new, really

-Solid pitch recognition
-Plus raw power
-Compact swing that occasionally gets long

Not sure if you’ve read Mike Newman’s write-up or not, but it’s more thorough: http://scoutingthesally.com/?p=1397

James

Can someone who doesn’t think that high a ranking for Jiwan is crazy explain it to me please?
I know he’s a great athlete and toolsy and all the rest, but doesn’t he at some point have to show some semblance of actual skills on a baseball field?

by realitypolice on Dec 13, 2010 2:39 PM EST reply actions

Jiwan James

I wrote a scouting report on Jiwan James after watching him play a couple of times. IMO, he’s vastly overrated as a prospect. Of course every org. would love a bunch of guys like him, but being ranked that high is VERY surprising.

Jiwan James Report

For the record, I also watched May throw 6 scoreless with 11 K which sounds spectacular on paper. May was working 92 up in the zone with an inconsistent curveball. He has a lot more work to do than a top-5 ranking indicates.

James

The only two scouting reports I’ve read on James have been Mike’s and Law’s, and neither one was especially glowing. What gave me some hope coming into the year was reasonably solid (albeit SSS) walk and strikeout rates at Williamsport, and I guess you could spin their detorioration at Lakewood as not disastrous. Same with the avg, SBs and XBHs, which have a surface appeal.

by blackoutyears on Dec 13, 2010 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

It's really not that crazy

That was his first year playing a full season as an every day player. So it’s not a stretch to believe he’ll keep developing his skills. He’s big, fast, and can play good D. There’s a lot of things to like about him.

Personally I’d have Biddle @ 7, James @ 8, Vance Worley @ 9, & probably Justin De Fratus at #10.

Honestly I'd say Gillies should prob

be higher than Altherr & Santana too. He’s at least proven he can hit above low A ball (albeit in hitter friendly leagues).

Gillies

I’ve never really understood the excitement with him. His ceiling is what, Endy Chavez?

http://bullpenbanter.com/

by Jeff Reese on Dec 13, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

No. No. No.

Gillies upside is a 290/380/420 leadoff hitter with ++ CF defense and 40 steals.

Long time lurker, new time poster.

You being srs?

Being listed as a #9/10 prospect on an orgs top 10 list, isn’t some crazy excitement.

A good lead off hitter with speed + plate discipline, and a really good glove in CF. Is a good player.

by Southwest on Dec 13, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Completely serious

He has speed and defense, but I really don’t see much upside in the bat. Endy Chavez seems like a reasonable expectation for him.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 13, 2010 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

He has the patience too.

And the contact skills. Won’t be much power, but could be 7-10 triples per year, getting the Iso over 100. Read my line for what I think his upside is. That’s a 4-5 WAR player. I’ve ALWAYS been his biggest hyper, for as long as I can remember. I cried when he got arrested.

Long time lurker, new time poster.

by Lionsroar10 on Dec 13, 2010 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

I just don't buy it, I guess

I don’t see him coming anywhere near that line.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 13, 2010 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

Thank You Sir

I’ve always been the biggest Gillies enthusiast on this blog. For quite a long time. I honestly doubt that will happen, but I still see hope coming through.

Just like me and Fowler and his 25/40 300/400/520 line.

Long time lurker, new time poster.

Not a bad list...

I can quibble about which player ranks where, but the players in the top-10 are similar to what I would have, with the exception of Jiwan James…he’s not in my top-10;

by Alex Eisenberg on Dec 13, 2010 3:38 PM EST reply actions

Kelly Dugan could blow up next year

Saw him in one game this year and easily the best pop on the team and that included Altherri and Santana.
