Rising Stars Game thread
Is anybody watching this game tonight? There is an awful lot of impressive talent playing in this game, even without Mr. Bryce Harper. A few observations...
-Brandon Belt looks like a good ballplayer to me, carries himself like a veteran
-Eric Thames reminds me of Matt Lawton, If you remember him. Good lookin' little player.
-Jeremy Jeffress fired a series of 99's to Brandon Laird and struck him out on a 101, yes 101.
- Ben Revere looked lightening-quick chasing down a Belt drive into the gap. He also plays the game with a ton of smiles and personality.
- Why didn't anybody tell me that the Cubs' Chris Carpenter had such good stuff?
- Rex Brothers, Brad Brach were also very impressive bullpen arms
- Johnny Giovatella looks like a ballplayer to me. Looks like the kind of player that everybody overlooks but, just plays himself into the big leagues.

Only saw Rex Brothers goes Ankeil for a couple pitches...
Watching the DVR recording now.
Montgomery’s got a really good arm but the polish you hear about him is a little overrated. There’s alot of room of upside and room to improve with this guy, in a good way. Also, Cliff Lee is the new lefty pitching prospect comparison.
Carpenter
He’s always had good stuff (keep in mind, he was projected to be a top 2 round pick at one point in time). Seems like the reports out of Arizona all acknowledge that, out of the pen, he can consistently go upper 90’s, although the fastball has better movement in the low – mid 90’s. I hope he can stick as a starter, but he needs to show the ability to carry stuff consistently deep into games, he needs consistency on the slider, and he needs to improve that change to stick. There’s still some durability concerns from a health perspective (missed some games this year), but he’ll have logged close to 150 innings this year by the end of AFL. The slider/slurvy ball has potential to be a solid 2nd offering.
At the very least, the Cubs should have themselves a power arm out of the pen.

Revere got on 1B in the bottom of that inning (I think he singled) and you could see him and Belt having a long and deep laugh about him robbing Belt of extra bases. I think Belt must have said something like, “Did you have to catch that one?”

Jeffres also K’d Belt on 3 swing-and-misses (with a foul ball in between) right before Laird. That was the only time Belt looked out of synch.

Anderson (potential Rays fist baseman in 2011) looked good to me.
He really did not miss that final pitch.

I did, but you weren’t paying attention! lol
