Failed prospects
Although they’ve played poorly so far, I’d be interested in reading about Kevin Ahrens, Kenny Wilson and Justin Jackson and what potential they still may have, if any.
Also, I expect a bounce back from Bobby Bell. He was injured for most of last year, making his numbers look worse then he pitched.
Finally, Mike McDade has power. He’s raking in the AZL as well. His main drawbacks are a bad body and lack of patience. I can’t talk to the former, but as far as the latter is concerned, his K/BB ratio in Arizona is 12/10. He’s only 21, so there should still be room for improvement, if not for growth.

Sean Ochinko
He’s a bit old (22) for A-ball, and he just had hand surgery, plus he’s likely moved to 3B from C, but I’d like to see what scouts think about Sean Ochinko.
John Tolisano is still young and showed some hot streaks, there’s a chance he could figure it out and become a utility player. The guy is batting .417/.563/.625 in 32 PA (extremely SSS yes) in the AFL at the moment.
I would definitely include both Tolisano and Ochinko over Sobolewski. I don’t think Mills is much of a prospect anymore and guys like Daniel Webb and Chris Hawkins haven’t had good results so far.
Hawkins
Has only played a single half season – the guy was just drafted! On the other hand, I agree with you on Webb – he hasn’t really shown anything since he was in high school – he struggled as a JuCo and so far as a pro. I wouldn’t write off Sobolewski either. He’ll be in AA at some point next year, at the age of 24. As for Mills, he is already MLB experienced, so you leave him in there until he totally bombs out, or loses eligibility.

hawkins is intriguing to me
He’s pretty raw, but his scouting reports sound awesome, especially for where he ended up being drafted.
Webb and Hawkins are both among the top 40
I definitely wouldn’t cut them.

Mills
He may not be a sexy prospect but I think he is going to have a MLB career which is more than a lot of these guys will have.
The A's probably love this guy
He’s identical to Barry Zito in every possible way.
Really hoping Thames gets a straight B.
Seems pretty safe to be at least a solid regular corner OF.
Seems a touch rich to me
The Blue Jays have their share of B and above prospects (7), but I don’t think Thames is quite at that level.

He's definitely a B
That bat will play, and the platoon concerns are wildly overblown. The guy is definitely under-rated, and I really cannot understand why for the life of me.

Mcdade needs to be included I think
He showed legitimate power in the FSL. A .180 ISO that includes 21 homers in Dunedin is nothing to sneeze at. He also has showed an improvement in his K/BB ratios in the AFL, a league filled with more advanced pitchers. He will only be 22 next season in AA and was always young for his league. I think he needs to be included. Out of all those prep prospects the Jays had in 2007, only McDade and Jimenez really warrant inclusion but both are of significant note.

Sam Dyson
I think he’s got to be on this list. He’s really going to surprise some people this year.
my opinion on others
Need to be included
Michael McDade
Gustavo Pierre
Would like included
Tolisano
Tristan Magnuson
No reason to include but would like included anyways
Ahrens. I can’t help myself from retaining slight hope after he dropped switch hitting.
Don’t need included
Matt Daly 23 yr old relief prospect in A ball (tristan magnuson is a better relief prospect)
Misual Diaz
Magnuson
Good point. I think he is a candidate to be protected on the 4o-man this year. Not a fan of Daly. Walks too many to be a really good candidate to rise quickly. And, fact is, he hasn’t risen quickly at all. Would the Jays keep a real RP “prospect” for full seasons at both Low A and High A?
Instead of Misual Diaz, how about looking at Milciades Santana?
by ofsticksandbats on Nov 16, 2010 2:16 PM EST up reply actions
Nope. But he is big and his numbers in his first taste of stateside ball were intriguing. Look at his improvement between 2008 and 2009 in the DSL. Also, his K/9 improved from his second year in the DSL to his first year in the GCL from 8.2/9 to 10.5/9. Yes, his BB/9 rose, and yes, he only pitched 30 innings last year, but with a name like Milciades, I want to know more. Is that so wrong?

Magunson
Looks like he just got dealt (packaged?) to the A’s for Rajai Davis.

+1
On McDade and Pierre. Both should be included on this list. I would also cut Daly.

Cutting Daly for Magnuson makes sense
Magnuson should end up the majors sometime next year and his stuff is fairly good. He has also managed to greatly reduce his walk rate this year. Improving in his AA transition shows how well Magnuson has taken to going back to the bullpen.
Daly has a higher walk rate than Magnuson and played at a lower level. He was not young for his league and will be 25 by the end of the 2011 season. Unless there are glowing scouting reports about his stuff, you cannot place him above Magnuson. In strictly terms of numbers, Daly’s preformance in the AFL does not suggest this.
Pierre probably belongs on here above Tolisano. Depends on how bad scouts view Pierre’s approach though. Tolisano does not the place yet in a deep Jays system. He needs to hit

Myles Jaye
Hitting 90-96 in instructs, not to be added to this list but just an interesting note.
Mitchell Taylor
McDade does need to be added as others have said, but the biggest omission is Mitchell Taylor. He is LHP who hits 93 on the gun at times and has a plus CB. BA states that he is more polished than most HS pitchers. Additionally, he got a way over slot deal in the 7th rd (367K).
What a seriously DEEP list...
I’d include McDade and cut Goins. However, somehow – someway – McDade has to be on the list.
Magnuson – meh – OK if he’s in or out – but the guy is good – who to cut.
I’d put Michell Taylor (7th round pick), Brandon Mims (9th round) and Shane Opitz (11th round) in with the group of young Latinos (none of whom made the list) Adonis Cardona, Gabriel Cenas, Santiago Nessy and Deivy Estrada as being possibly VERY GOOD – but we just don’t know enough yet to say who on that list they might specifically end up being better than. HOWEVER – all seven of those guys – even with the little we know – would clearly make many teams top 30.
Jeroloman
Can you really include him anymore, he’s been in AA, AAA for the last three years and seems to have stagnated.
Agree that Magnuson should make the list.
Daly not so much.
Theses are the guys i have highest who are not listed:
1. Pierre – assume this was an oversight
2. Aherns – only on the hope that the adjustment caused the improvement
3. Loewen – tearing up the AFL for wat that’s worth
4. Dyson – I’s like to have more than one source on this supposed surgery
5. Magnson – maybe not high ceiling but seems a good chance of reaching it
6. McDade – ot a believer, but still, barely in my top 40
7. Bobby Bell – rough season
Dyson
I don’t have any new information, but would it really surprise you? The guy has had surgery after surgery, from Andy Seiler’s write up:
He underwent labrum surgery on his throwing shoulder, then soon after had surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, then later he had surgery on his elbow to move a nerve that was scraping against his bone. All told, he lost his freshman year to a medical redshirt, and then he was limited as a redshirt freshman, though he had good success. He ended up showing huge stuff as a sophomore, but he fell once again due to questions about his durability and signability as an eligible sophomore last June. The A’s spent a tenth round pick on him. He didn’t sign, had bone chips removed from his pitching elbow in August, then returned to have a very successful junior year.
Him needing TJ Surgery would be one of the least surprising developments of the off-season.

I agree McDade deserves a spot. He displayed some impressive power playing in the pitcher friendly Florida State League.
Shawn Bowman might deserve a look as well. He is currently tearing up Winter Ball and was named Player of the Week.
Trystan Magnuson
Never mind on him. Word on the we is he was just dealt to Oakland for Rajai Davis. The moral here is that a guy who can be dealt straight up or as the feature piece in a deal for a speedy MLB outfielder (of the 4th OF variety) should definitely be the type of guy to get a writeup.

Danny Farquhar
Scratch him, too – gone with Magnuson in the deal for Rajai Davis.
by ofsticksandbats on Nov 17, 2010 5:25 PM EST reply actions
Assuming he replaces Farquhar. I still think neither Matt Daly nor Misual Diaz aren’t really worthy. Gustavo Pierre is a much more interesting candidate. Him, and Kevin Ahrens.
by ofsticksandbats on Nov 17, 2010 10:01 PM EST up reply actions
Still no Pierre?
If McDade is replacing Farquhar then I would replace Daly with Pierre.
by TwoEyesForAnEye on Nov 17, 2010 10:43 PM EST up reply actions
ok
Ok fair enough….I can drop Daly and Diaz for Pierre and Ahrens.

New additions to the 40-man
Today, the Jays added Joel Carreno, Alan Farina, Brian Jeroloman, Darin Mastroianni and Moises Sierra to the 40-man roster.

Not protected
Some notable names to go unprotected include Brad Emaus and that’s probably all. Not much else of note from those years in the draft. I think Balbino Fuenmayor is now officially busted as well. Shows why not everyone is happy to go all out investing in 16-year-old Latin toolsheds.
