Derrick Robinson

I’m very surprised Derrick Robinson isn’t on the prelim list. He’s got incredible athleticism, and finally started to hit the ball this year hitting .286 in his first stint at AA. I feel like his speed, athleticism, and defense combined with an improving bat at 22 make him worthy of a spot on the initial list at least.

robinson

Yeah i need to put him on there. will adjust tomorrow.

Jeff Bianchi, Noel Arguelles, and Mike Antonio look like guys i might add.

Theriot would be a cut. Would consider cutting Santiago, Avinazar, Pimentel, and T. Smith. Unless ya know something i dont, which is likely in some of these cases.

+1

Talked to a guy today who thought he had good gap to gap power. Bat will play somewhere.

Tim Smith

I might be the only Royals fan that likes Tim Smith. He lacks power, but gets on base, has good plate discipline, decent speed, and no notable platoon split.

I think he could end up being a solid 4th OF. I like him over Parraz, who’s 2 years older.

by deezle on Oct 21, 2010 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont think Parraz makes the list

I don’t even know if he’ll be back with the organization.

by 306008 on Oct 21, 2010 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Some notables missing

Noel Arguelles – didn’t play this year but has to be on a top 40 list simply due to upside. Reportedly will be ready to start pitching in April.

Jeff Bianchi – borderline top 10 guy before TJ surgery. I think has to be on a top 40 list.

Derrick Robinson – coming off his best pro season. Has holes in his offensive game but will stick at CF and has tons of athleticism.

Manny Pina – reportedly great defense at catcher and had a decent offensive season split between AA and AAA.

Michael Antonio – 3rd round pick this year out of NY high school, had a decent debut. Probably will be a corner OF.

Humberto Arteaga/Orlando Caxito – both guys are Latin SS prospects that received $1+MM bonuses. Given the age concerns with Caxito I would rank Arteaga ahead of him.

Guys you could remove:
Theriot, Santiago, Avinazar, Barrera, Pimentel, Parraz (rumors the Royals will let him go to make room in AAA for OF with higher upside)

by deezle on Oct 21, 2010 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

Antonio for sure, Caxito and Arteaga might need mentioning.

There are a few people who really LVOE Arteaga. Theriot is underrated by us all. He is a legit player.

DRob and Pina… meh…. Bianchi… what do you do for injury guys like that?

Avinazar needs to be there. Santiago I think as well…. Parraz can go.

by 306008 on Oct 21, 2010 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

You'd rank Theriot above Pina?

I’ve heard Pina’s defense will at least carry him to the majors as a backup catcher, and his offense showed a lot of promise this year.

Bianchi should drop but I don’t think he falls off a list completely. TJ, especially for a position player, is not a death knell.

by deezle on Oct 22, 2010 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Just from reports

I’ve heard that Pina won’t be able to handle a pitching staff. I’ve heard that from more than two sources. From watching Theriot, he is vastly underrated. He plays good D. Runs well. And can swing the bat.

Is he better than Pina? I think his ceiling is higher. Pina has a chance to break spring with the big club next year as the back up… but May will probably assume that role and Pina will be at AAA.

ALso surprised Robinson isn't on the list

Personally, I don’t think that he’s a great prospect. But I don’t see the rationale in including Jarrod Dyson and not including Robinson.

Waiting for April.

by DC Royal on Oct 21, 2010 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

Check out Dr. Rany on this subject

On ranyontheroyals, he basically explained his rationale for the dyson over Robinson flip flop he made. Apparently there are scouts out there who love Dyson as a late bloomer. Rany makes a very interesting case as why Dyson will be more valuable. Don’t know if John has any of the same rationales but it is interesting that they both came to the same conclusion.

by thehitonecafe on Oct 21, 2010 7:04 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

probably

and for what it’s worth, Dyson’s probably the best defensive player i’ve ever laid my eyes on in person. he’s got absurd speed and good instincts in the outfield, AND a really good arm, which is almost jaw dropping coming from a guy who’s no better than 160 or 170 pounds.

if he could hit just a little…just a LITTLE, he’d be pretty damn valuable. i’m just not sure if he ever will.

Dyson will hit

but not for power or a very high average. .275 tops but will walk. He doesn’t really strike out as much as his short MLB stint….

And defensively he is goooood.

Didn't BA adjust how they view it for relivers though?

After Bard last year. Of course BA isn’t the be all, end all.

by deezle on Oct 22, 2010 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, that's where the 30 appearances comes into play

Before that it was just 50 IP.

Pat White

Not sure who to drop for him but I imagine many, including myself, will be very curious about a guy with this kind of athleticism—even if he hasn’t played baseball in quite some time.

WURoyal from RoyalsReview wishes it to be known

that he thinks Yowill Espinal should be listed, but WURoyal can’t post here yet.

Will Smith

He was a different pitcher when he went to KC, I hope KC keeps control of him and stops bouncing him around and he might reach the potential people thought he would in LAA

by Ralpho316 on Oct 22, 2010 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

Someone at RR mentioned

Hilton Richardson. He had horrible stats but he has all the potential in the world. He just hasn’t figured anything out yet.

Smith stays.

Pina…eh…

Espinal has already been added.

Sample sucks. Might add him and cut someone else.

by John Sickels on Oct 24, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

ya

Sample has to learn to pitch at some point. I can respect the stuff but the control is just so bad right now it’s hard to project even average command at this point.

Agreed on Sample, but prospects is about potential, right...

& Sample has a lot of that.

T Smith & Pina seem to have very little upside or potential. An arguement could be made that Carlo Testa has more upside then T Smith bc of Defensive flexiablity, speed & power.

Murray Watts, & Kevin David are a couple of more names that could be considered & probably will make next yrs list based on the huge power potenial of Watts & David’s well rounded game @ his position. Reports are David is impressing in instructs.

I’d love to include all of those guys and make the book 45-50 players deep for each team.

But if I did that, I’d have to raise the cost to 40 bucks a book, and somehow make it a nine-day work week given all the other things I do.
