2010 MLB Draft Notebook

Hey guys, I've come up with a new product that I hope will become the go-to resource for the draft. I'm writing here to gauge interest in this product.

I’m introducing the 2010  MLB Draft Notebook. The MLB Draft Notebook is a PDF product that will consist of approximately 750 individual writeups on players that are eligible for the 2010 draft. The exact number of players is yet to be determined, but it will cover about the number of players that will taken in the first 25 rounds.

Here’s what you will get with the MLB Draft Notebook:

  • An easily searchable PDF that is easily accessible for both draft day reference and future reference
  • Vitals on each and every player including height, weight, birth date, school, hitting and throwing hands and school
  • Commitments for prep and junior college players
  • A unique player rating system written by myself that will give you info on a player’s projected draft slot, ceiling, and chance of reaching that ceiling
  • Signability chances for players depending on what round they’re taken in
  • Team-by-team draft previews
  • Scouting reports on over 750 players!

You’ll be getting all of this for only $9.99. The release date will be the weekend of the draft, most likely on Sunday. I want the information to be as up-to-date as possible, so that’s the reason behind the later release date.

I’ve already compiled a list of approximately 825 players so far specifically for the notebook, and I’ll be adding and subtracting names as I go, with the final number to come. This is all on top of the usual 1500+ name list I usually work with, so this notebook will become the focus of what I do. Expect continued good information here on my blog, but for an excellent product you can continue coming back to, consider investing the small amount on this product. I promise it will be worth the money.

What I need from you is some information on your interest in the notebook. I’d like to gauge just how many people are interested in buying this product. If you think you’ll buy this, just comment here if you will. You don’t have to promise anything. I’d just like to see the interest in something like this. There’s obviously no limit on the amount of PDFs I can send out, so it’s just for my reference.

Thanks for all of your support here in the fanposts. I appreciate you guys giving me feedback over the last year with my content.

The release date will be the weekend of the draft, most likely on Sunday.

Just to clarify, this means the weekend immediately after the draft, or immediately preceding the draft?

Either way, I think I’ll be getting it.

That makes more sense, but just wanted to make sure.

I’d have gotten it anyway, but that makes it a no brainer. Looking forward to it.

I'll get a copy

and pay double if you had similar info on the top 50 projected “july 2nd” international signings

Since you brought the subject up...

Exactly what sort of contacts do you have that will provide accurate and insightful info on American-born amateurs?

I'll pay for it

Is drafting really their problem?

by jfish26101 on Jan 29, 2010 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

I'd be interested

But I’d second the idea of releasing it earlier.

Also, ten bucks??? C’mon man. Go for the brass ring. That’s way too cheap for the amount of work you’re putting into it.

+1 on releasing it earlier

I’m sure some people would buy it after the draft, but I think many more would do it before-hand, so it might be a good idea to release it a little earlier. How about something where it comes out, say, 3 weeks before the draft, we can buy it for $10, and then you release an updated version a few days before the draft. People who didn’t get the first copy could buy the updated version for $10, and those of us who did buy the first copy could have some sort of pay-what-you-want system. That way you’re getting 10 dollars from anyone who buys it, and then people who get the first and second copy would have an option of tossing in another 5 or 10 or whatever for the updated version.

I like this idea.

With the sheer amount of information that’s likely to be in it, the earlier the release the better. If you’re able to release the bulk of the scouting reports a few weeks before (as I’m sure most of them will be written at that point), I know I’d love the chance to get a jump on reading a lot of it. Then you can go ahead and release the updated version the Sunday before the draft with the info that’s more time sensitive (signability chances, final player ratings, etc.).

It obviously depends on what you’re able to do, but I’d gladly pay $10 for the initial release and kick in an extra $5 or $10 for the final version — it’d be worth it to have more time to read the scouting reports.

This is a good idea.

The only question I have about it is if it will be done enough to feel like I’m putting out a quality product. Editing and the like.

someone might even be willing to do it just for a free copy.

I don’t think you need to release multiple versions with updates.

Woo!

I would definitely buy a copy!

I'm definitely interested...

I’d like to see a couple of sample scouting reports closer to release date, though.

by slamcactus on Jan 30, 2010 9:52 PM EST reply actions

My blog will have samples.

I’ll be posting as I go along. The stats and reports will be written and re-written as I go along, so I’ll post individual reports in small groups weekly or so.

I want to emphasize that this doesn’t replace my blog content. It will enhance it. You’ll get more reports and rankings than ever there.

It’s gonna be a great spring.

Pirates think Harper is too hyped?

I found this pretty interesting:

General manager Neal Huntington made a striking pronouncement on the 2010 draft yesterday by telling the PirateFest crowd that Bryce Harper, the Las Vegas catcher dubbed “Baseball’s LeBron” by Sports Illustrated last June, is not currently among the Pirates’ top 10. They pick second. “He’s getting a lot of hype,” Huntington said. “We will scout Bryce Harper. But we’re not going to select him because somebody thinks he’s the best prospect in the history of the game and we think he’s the 10th-best.”

I’m assuming that unless Harper gets injured he wouldn’t be there for Pittsburgh to pick anyway, but not even in the top 10? Quote is from Kovacevic’s article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today.

I don’t think Harper is a lock to be 1.1, but I have a hard time seeing him dropping out of the top 10 unless he really struggles in JuCo ball. Huntington also claimed that Tony Sanchez was the best prospect on his board so a unique opinion definitely isn’t anything new from him.

by Jeff Reese on Jan 31, 2010 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

Hm...

if that’s the entirety of Huntington’s quote, he’s not saying Harper’s not in their top-10. I’ve heard a lot along these lines, actually, saying that Harper’s a damned good prospect, but an overhyped one. People with decent mid-term memories will remember that Robert Stock got a similar level of hype as a 17-year-old, too. Huntington is saying that the Pirates will keep an eye on Harper and listen to their scouts about where he ranks against other top talent. Seems reasonable to me.

by slamcactus on Jan 31, 2010 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

What a ludicrous misread of what is really a perfectly logical statement

All Huntington said was that they would follow their internal decisionmaking process rather than picking the guy who BA says is the best guy. That’s rather unremarkable. There’s a reason teams pay $$$ for their own scouting departments.

He did not say that Harper is outside the team’s top 10 (at least not in that quote). Kovacevic’s reading and/or listening comprehension skills need some serious work.

Shawn Spencer: "I’m receiving a transmission from your husband. Really more of a voicemail, if I'm being honest. A status update. Perhaps a twitter."
Burton Guster: "I believe it’s called a tweet."
Shawn Spencer: "There’s no way I’m saying that."

by PaulThomas on Jan 31, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I didn't quite get it at first

I think he was using exaggeration rather than actually saying Harper was tenth on their board.

Pre-order option is now available.

I honestly didn’t expect so much interest so fast, but if you want to order it and not have to worry about going through the steps to pay for it later, you can pre-order it now.

Here’s the direct link.

I also have a button that will be up on my blog for you to pre-order the notebook at any time.

The incentives to pre-order at that you’re at the front of the line for delivery to your inbox (perhaps a few days early), and that you’ll be invited to an all questions answered chat the week before the draft notebook is released. Literally all questions answered. If any of you remember my 4 hour chat last year, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

If you know anyone that would be interested in this product, pass the link along with the description that is found here.

I’m also tweeting more this draft season, so follow me here. I stick to draft tweets, so don’t worry about me commenting on the mundane.

It’s going to be a good spring.

it gives everyone 3 different ways to disagree with you, though, heh.
