OT: Brett Favre
Ok, I will preface this with the information that I am a Jets fan, so my opinion of Mr. Favre is less than positive. But after Favre's recent and vague announcement that his return for next season is "highly unlikely," I have simply had enough. Well, that's not true. I had enough last summer when Favre, like a whiney attention whore looking for a prom date, waited until he felt wanted enough by the Vikings' organization to decide to play. The man truly is a narcissist in the worst possible way of the word. I couldn't think of a more predictable Favre line than to say that it's "highly unlikely" that he'll be back. If he hasn't made a decision, then just say that! But that's not Favre's M.O., nor has it ever been. To paraphrase Cheap Trick: He wants us to want him. And it works, too. ESPN will commence their Favre watch 2 weeks before the Superbowl is even played. It's ludicrous that this man, no matter how great an athlete he is, continues to have the ability to wrap us around his finger. With recent news that Coach Childress will not impose a deadline for Favre's decision, we can look forward to another summer full of Favre. Lucky us

i disagree with a lot of this
i feel like the media is responsible for this. This is a guy who has known one thing his whole life…football…and he is pretty darn good at it. Im sure his body screams at him on a regular basis to just retire already, but his heart tells him to play. I cant get angry at the guy for not being able to make up his mind. I dont think it has anything to do with him being a narcissist. I do however agree that all the Favre coverage is rediculous and that nobody should even ask him his thoughts about playing next year until July at the earliest. However, of course that was the first question asked by the media because THEY want to make it a story, and another here we go again kinda thing…just my 2 cents
I can get angry at him
He can shut his damn mouth until he makes a decision, just like everyone else. I was annoyed with these antics before he even left the Packers. Seems like he’s done this 5 times now.

I'm more sick of the comments about Favre blowing the game
Why do so many sportswriters talk about Favres fatal flaw and how he cost them the game? He threw a pick with 7 seconds left. If he ran as some mentioned he’d probably get 3 yards which wouldn’t help them. He never was very fast and he was hurt. If by some miracle he got 15 yards or so the time would have ran out.
And if he didn’t throw the pick they would have had another shot with 7 seconds. One second would have to be left for the kick attempt. So 6 seconds to get off a pass, make a completion, get down, and call the timeout. Very unlikely. And they would still have to kick a longish field goal.
Favre didn’t lose the game. An offensive line would have helped. A running back that doesn’t fumble would also. Or even better just compliment the better team on winning.
Just about everywhere I see the same junk about it being his fault. Heck, that’s why Kurt Warner is retiring. If he isn’t perfect and they lose then he gets the blame.
Huh?
He DID blow the game. Its not the first time his stupid throws have led to picks that ruined team’s seasons, either.
He’s the all time leader in interceptions! Its not like this was a rare lapse. He’s also the most overrated QB in history.
He did NOT blow the game
If that ball is not intercepted it is probably incomplete. It was 3rd and 15 from out of field goal range. Assuming it’s incomplete, they would have had to try a field goal from around 55 yards, or they would have had 4th and 15 with next to no time left. Either way, they’re probably still looking at overtime. The interception was inconsequential insomuch as it’s just another incompletion.

out of field goal range?
longwell is a good kciker and can easily hit a 55 yarder..

I didn't say
out of field goal range. He COULD have made it, but it’s probably less than a 50-50 shot.

No 55 yarder is easy

Then he's a hero
But if all he did was throw an incompletion there, no one would be saying he lost the game. Maybe another qb would have completed the pass, and probably 3 out of 4 times Favre would have too (he made a fabulous pass just a few plays prior), but he should not get the blame for losing the game when essentially all he did was throw an incompletion on 3rd and 15. I feel pretty confident that if Tarvaris Jackson had been in that huddle on the final drive, they wouldn’t have even sniffed midfield.

Really? Most overrated in HISTORY?
Strong words, pardner.
Shawn Spencer: "I’m receiving a transmission from your husband. Really more of a voicemail, if I'm being honest. A status update. Perhaps a twitter."
Burton Guster: "I believe it’s called a tweet."
Shawn Spencer: "There’s no way I’m saying that."
Yes. Yes they are.
That’s why I used them.
There are a large amount of people (many who work for ESPN) who seem to feel Brett Favre is the greatest QB of all time. I think that’s absolutely batshit insane… and I own a Favre jersey (Packers – and I don’t even like the Packers).
He’s in the top 15 but mostly because of longevity. He was a very fun player to watch and he always played like a gunslinger. Now, Im willing to concede football is a very, very subjective sport that doesnt lend itself to analysis… but I really can’t see any case for Favre as GOAT.
If you have a QB you think was more overrated Im all ears. There arent too many guys who get mentioned as GOAT. Maybe Bradshaw had the same hype in the 70’s… I don’t know. That’s a bit before my time.
Anyone who claims Favre is in discussion for best all-time is obviously being disingenuous and can immediately be disregarded
As far as overrated, though, I’d lean toward someone who racked up lots of counting stats while not performing that well on a rate basis. Elway, maybe? He’d be an easy call if he hadn’t actually turned into a legitimate star QB (as opposed to merely someone touted as one) at age 33.

Manning = GOAT
Why wait until he is at the end of his career to call him the greatest, I think it’s pretty evident now.
Adam Dunn: Proof that even sabermetrics doesn't have it right.
Given the advantages modern-era teams have in terms of passing offense
I tend to be a bit more biased towards pre-2000’s QBs. But it’s damn near impossible not to consider Manning one of the 2-3 best ever to play the game.
This is supremely ignorant
Very appropriate that you quote a distorted statistic. He throws fewer interceptions than many greats. Just because he’s been in the game longer, you declare that he’s bad. I suppose you think that a Boston QB, or rather a handful of them are greater. Tom Brady threw away the season according to your logic, because he STUNK. He SUCKED.
The logic that he blew the game despite numerous errors by his teammates is phenomenally shallow and unthinking. If there were a WAR statistic for football, he’d rock. No doubt you’d say that the Patriots have a prospect who was just as good based on arm strength and who knows what.
Well, there's DYAR
in which Favre ranked fifth on the season, behind Brees, Rivers, Manning and a certain Boston QB (who, ironically, led the league, despite all the stinking and sucking).
Although, to note
Favre ranked third in YAR (ahead of Brady), which doesn’t account for strength of defenses faced.
First off, Im not a Patriots fan
Secondly, there is absolutely no way to characterize what happened out there other than “Favre blew the game.”
Did you watch the game
There were at least a dozen things that happened, which if any one of them was undone would have likely led to a different fate. Favre’s last interception was on that list, but hardly the top. It’s just the most memorable. The Vikings lost the ball twice in the redzone and gave one away in the Saint’s redzone for a TD. There were 3 blown calls on OT, not to mention some questional misconduct plays throughout the game.
I personally have no problem if he wants to come back.. Heck, I’d rather have him then Sage or TJoke.

so that just ruins your first 2 paragraphs.

" and call the timeout"
Middle of second paragraph.
come on
Every year an older beat up player in MLB, NFL, NHL, etc. always mentions retiring. It’s normal. Those are the type of players that are seen as honest and give their opinion while in the peak of their career. But when asked that question near the end and they answer honestly then they are considered prima donnas?
Don’t buy what the media is selling. They aren’t selling the news, just their papers.
Damn Favre for screwing the vikikings out of getting a good QB in the draft

It is annoying that wherever Favre goes, it’s all about him. But obviously he can still play, so walking away can’t be easy, and I don’t begrudge him his opportunity. And I don’t think you can say his indecision hurt the Packers and Jets, since they’re both doing great with young QBs now. As for the media circus, eh, celebrity overkill is what they do.
Finally, as a GM, you know Favre will help you in the long term but his style means potential disaster from play to play. The Vikings don’t make the NFC finals without him. Set your expectations accordingly.
he who shall not be named
is a glory hound who loves nothing better than for people to talk and talk and talk about him. he knows how to play the media and the public like a fiddle. the fact we are talking about him on a baseball sight is proof of his ability to stay relevent. he is an awesome player and i wish that was his legacy. instead i think of him as the paris hilton of football. anything to stay relevent. i would not be suprised if we see panty less crotch shots of him getting out of a car after he retires just to stay in the papers.
He's an addict..
no matter what he says or does, he will be in a uniform week 1 next season unless his right arm is removed from his body.
My question is, if Clemens was on PED’s throwing 95 at 40 years old, why is Brett Favre not looked at as a suspect, throwing rockets 60 yards down field after having shoulder surgery last off season?
