BA Rangers Top 10
1. Neftali Feliz, rhp
2. Justin Smoak, 1b
3. Martin Perez, lhp
4. Tanner Scheppers, rhp
5. Jurickson Profar, ss
6. Kasey Kiker, lhp
7. Robbie Ross, lhp
8. Mitch Moreland, of/1b
9. Danny Gutierrez, rhp
10. Wilmer Font, rhp
3 position players and 7 SP with 3 guys projected to be in the top 25. Nice to see that Moreland's AFL has put him in real instead of fringe prospect status.
Looks like the Profar at SS bandwagon is already picking up steam.

Got dinged for his bizarre illness last year I guess

They spelled it
K-i-k-e-r and ranked him a couple spots too high.

I really don't understand Main and Font below Moreland
BP had this too.
I dont know why people like Moreland so much. I have to really stretch my imagination to project him as an above average player, and Im far from certain he’ll be even an average player. His approach is just too damn scary and he doesnt really do much for me. He’s not a good defender, doesnt have a lot of power, doesnt walk much at all…
Give me Font and Main, easy.
I agree
I’ve always liked Moreland, but now he’s gone from being underrated to overrated.

Right.
He’s not a bad prospect. He does have a very good hit tool and some gap power+. He’s not terrible defensively either.
But what’s the ceiling here? Without a number of major adjustments I think the ceiling is an around league average player (which yes, has value, and again – guy’s a decent prospect).
In what I consider one of the best farm systems in baseball I can’t see listing Moreland above two guys both who have a pretty good chance at being above average players and at least Font has the upside for more. Yes, Main and Font have flaws… umm… Moreland has some pretty big flaws, too. Moreland’s discipline is a much bigger concern for me than Main’s health (though Id understand why some would disagree with that) and Font’s mechanics (lets say).
His approach has apparently changed dramatically
since joining the Rangers.
Moreland has done pretty much nothing to make people dislike him because of his results. Low K totals, nice OBP, and has shown some great power until he got to Frisco last season where it wasn’t like he tanked. He could walk more and his Frisco debut could have been better, but he looks like a great bet to at least be a solid Major League hitter who can play a few positions (and doesn’t butcher those positions). I think you are underselling his contact skills too low.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I still can't get past the Gutierrez deal from the Royals perspective...
A guy that ranks in the top 10 in a deep system for 2 lower end prospects…
I know he has legit makeup issues, but I would have expected a little more than what they recieved for any team’s player on the bottom half of the top 10…
Anyone want to take a guess on where Gutierrez would have fallen in the Royals top 10?

In the KC chat
It was indicated that he would not have made the top 10.
Avery (Walnut Creek): Where would Cortes and Gutierrez have ranked if they had not been wasted… I mean traded mid-season?
J.J. Cooper: Both would have dropped out of the Top 10. With Cortes there seem to be times the light bulb goes on and others where it drops off. With Gutierrez the multiple run-ins with the law are a clear concern, although the arm is still pretty special. I’d say they would have been in the 10-15 range with Gutierrez ranking higher than Cortes.
Interesting... I would consider the Rangers top 10 and for that matter 11-15
better than the Royals and yet Gutierrez would make the Rangers and not the Royals top 10?

That and how much did his AFL stint have to do with his
ranking for Texas?

maybe others don't agree
and quite frankly, after the top 3 or 4, i think i’d start favoring KC’s top 10 players.

I think he gets a higher ranking with how he performed in the AFL

I hope Moreland's AFL had nothing to do with his being bumped
Considering that the AFL is absolutely meaningless, particularly for evaluating hitters.
I think Moreland's a bit too high here, but
what in his minor league record is inconsistent with his AFL showing? He’s hit everywhere he’s been.

Amazing how good this system is with him at #3. It’s the right answer, but just amazing to me all the same.
Wrote up Perez on Monday.
