Kyeong Kang and the Rays
John,
what grade do you think Mr. Kang is capable of? B? B-? Is he Sin-Soo Choo Part II?
wow those Rays are loaded…
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
Sin-Soo Choo Part II
Try saying that 5 times fast.
Agreed on Hector
Hector for Zerga, almost seems automatic.

They're pretty easy cuts
Zerpa might be interesting, but I have no idea how Wiegand is anywhere near the list.

He mashed in APP plus organization needs 1B prospects

He was a 25th round pick
Who did well in the lowest level of American baseball as a 22 year-old. There might be some intrigue there, but I could rattle off 25 guys who aren’t mentioned above who are better prospects than Wiegand.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

yeah
Though I don’t know about there being 25 better.

eh
Just add a slash line for Sweeney’s position, seeing as he’s likely to be moved to 1B by end of ST camp.

Not even in the organization and there’s plenty of prospects better than him.

Meh
Dorville had a decent season there, but he’s 20 (which is ancient for that league) and John probably doesn’t have the world’s best access to the foreign leagues anyway.

I echo the Wiegand cut
And Ty Bortnick, Zach Quate, Jose Lobaton and Rayner Oliveros are pretty borderline to me as well (all decent but old performers who have their interesting points, but seem pretty unlikely to have a major league impact).
Possibly worth mentioning:
Shawn O’Malley
Cesar Lopez (recent international bonus baby)
Dustin Biell
Kyle Ayers
Hector Guevara
Nevin Ashley

I like Ashley, just not going to say he's a better offensive player than Lobaton based on 100 PA in a hitters environment
I do hope he builds on it but I need more, including the walks he did not draw in the AFL. Love the arm.

Makes you think...
Seeing as it takes decent, somewhat above-average speed, to hit triples, I wonder who would run in a foot-race between Ashley and Bailey(who, I believe from reports has good speed for a catcher)
by Jacob Larsen on Jan 13, 2010 12:10 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
It's hard to draw walks when you bat over .400
I don’t think you can hold that particular issue against him from the AFL stat line.
He had a great AFL, but thats about what it was
Hitting in the upper levels is far more difficult. He will need on-base skills to make it.

Downs will have some major question marks
After he was hit in the head by a line drive. He seems to be doing well, but it was a major injury and not the easiest one to get back on the mound after.

a .311 SLG at that level of play considering he played as a 21 year old the entire time
he has a long way to go with the power if its going to play at higher levels.
Shuman is a keeper IMO
He’s a sleeper extraordinairre. The fact that he was invited to the February camp also indicates that the front office likes him a lot.

philosophical question
Philosphical question….what do you prefer to see on a prospect list, a Grade C guy who is a sleeper but is at a lower level, like Quate, or a Grade C prospect who is closer to the majors but who projects as just an extra guy, like Rollins or Morlan?
lower level guy I think
Moreso with this system where there doesn’t seem to be much room. Also, because I’d like to hear your take on guys I’m less familliar with.
sleepers. Not looking for replacement level players but maybe that`s just me.

So if it came down to Quate and Shuman vs. Downs/Rollins/Morlan, you’d prefer an opinion about Quate and shuman.
Yes sir
Rollins seems to be stagnated in the org, would love to see him in majors but probably won’t be for the Rays.
by Jacob Larsen on Jan 13, 2010 12:20 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Yes
Shuman’s definitely a keeper I think. My only issue is that I don’t think Quate’s upside is any higher than where Morlan is now.

Have you seen the movement on Quate` s pitches?
I don`t know if he can continue to repeat his delivery as it is unorthodox but the guy has wicked movement on both the four seam and the two.

Yes, I have
He does have wicked movement. But he’s a righty who throws about as fast as JP Howell, which means he’ll need to excel every step of the way just to make it to the majors.

He's not really a submariner
He throws from a low 3/4 slot, but sort of short-arms the ball like a sidearmer. His future success will be dependent on whether people can figure out how to pick up his delivery.

I would swap out Morlan for Suarez
I realize it’s been “locked down,” but I think anyone who reads this site and buys John’s books regularly will know all there is to know about Eduardo Morlan.
My opinion of Heath Rollins
Generally the upside guys, depending, of course, on how close they are to the majors. I have more faith in Rollins than I do someone like Downs or Oliveros. I don’t know why people just jumped off the Rollins bandwagon so quick, he was in AA and cut down his biggest issue, the home runs (by a good amount too, in a relatively large sample size). The walks remained solid and sure, the K rate dropped, but it didn’t drop off the face of the earth. For me, worst case scenario he makes it up as a reliever where theoretically his strikeout rate would improve, and given his command of all pitches the BB/9 shouldn’t rise. Matt Wise was a valueable major league reliever, and I would say that type of performance is an acceptable comp for Rollins with potential to be a passable back of the rotation guy. Should not be off the top 40, and the arguments for a reliever-only type like Oliveros or an older guy like Downs ahead of him is shaky to me at best.
Team low 7.4% Sw strikes at AA was a major concern to me
Demoted to bullpen.
Follow Me on Twitter @FreeZorilla
seems like a lot of weight put on swinging strike rate
Yes, its important, but you seem to be making it out as the most important thing. His 3.7 FIP was more than adequate
MLsplits has his FIP at 3.92 adjusted for luck at 4.15
Generating a fair amount of GBs, but the true GBers will generate a ton in the minors. I’m just not confident he will translate well beyond AA.
Follow Me on Twitter @FreeZorilla
He reminds me of a poor man`s Andy Sonninstine
The biggest knock that I have with Heath is his K/9 rate and his pretty pedestrian stuff. I think he will get lit up as the hitters improve in AAA and potentially MLB.
