get rid of...
Catricala, housey, and texeira (he wont make the team anyway)
rids
I am including all rule 5 picks so texeira stays.
I agree, catricala and housey are marginal

Robles, Fields, and Hill have some upside as relievers,
But other than that, there really aren’t any.
Cleto and Cortes are the best SP prospects
Fields has a ceiling as an ace reliever/closer.
I’d say the pitcher with the most star power is Fields, but that all depends on how you value a stud reliever as opposed to a mid rotation SP.

No reason for Carraway, Housey and especially Moran in my opinion.
Scouting reports on Hesketh weren’t encouraging but his K/9 rates surprised me.
Moran is a lefty junkballer right drafted out of UNC right?
I sort of like Moran for some reason decent enough K rates gets good amount of GB. But that’s just me and he seems like the stereotypical softy lefty tosser anyway.
Agreed on Housey and Carraway though.
You got slurved!
If they let him start he might be intriguing
But as a reliever he can only have so much value. Looks like he’ll be tough on lefties.
I find Carraway interesting
It may just be because I like Virginia baseball though. He’s not a great prospect by any means, but he did have a nice debut.
Williamson probably has more in him than Hesketh
He is at least more projectable physically due to his youth and a couple extra ticks on his fastball might help him go a long way in starter. A 4 year senior dominating Rookie and SS batters is nothing to get excited about. If he can keep up these numbers in AA, it becomes a completey different story.

Evan Sharpley
Come on John, give Sharpley a write up. I’m biased because I like former ND football players who just so happen to play baseball instead, but he did do well in limited action when he signed.
I mean seriously, Tuiasosopo is an older prospect, and is essentially gonna be a C, why not give Sharpley a C, same position, at least a potential future whereas Matt is just like his brother Marques and won’t hack it in the pros
Like I said, though, that’s just me wanting to see a write up on a ND guy.
"...It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come."
+1 about Sharpley
I like sharpley and i think he could be pretty good. I think Tui can still become something good, he’s gonna be 24 this season and has a good chance to start if lopez gets dumped or gets injured.

Don't think Sharpley does anything at higher levels. Big uppercut swing, below average plate skills
Nice debut though.
Tui is solid.
Yeah I would take my odds with Tui over Sharpley
Sharpley does have the physique to be a great power hitter, but his approach and experience are very far behind where he should be at his age.

Mike Carp is questionable at this point
I think. At his age he’s pretty much peaked and he’s a poor defender at first with not enough stick to be a good AAA 1B. Plus he’s a ginger.

He's got more talent than a lot of these other names, though.
So he should stay. Until he loses his prospect status, he’s at least a C+ prospect.

Oh christ I thought he was 26 or 27
Don’t know what happened there…. OK nevermind then.

Carrera and Cleto?
No. Hensley is debatable. He had a decent season and was versatile enough to be thrown around to the various levels without much trouble, but I don’t think his stuff is that good.

Yeah...
that’s not a good 3. Cleto’s got the best velocity in the system and Carrera’s going to be a 4th outfielder. There are plenty of guys on that list with little to no chance of major league careers. Cutting one who’s nearly guaranteed to make the majors as a reserve seems silly. Hensley’s a legit arm, too, though I see him as a reliever ultimately.
Cleto
how can you have a problem with a 20 year old that hangs out 92-98 with his FB? As a starter?

strongly disagree with cutting Cleto
Cleto’s one of the best arms in the system IMO. He’s got the best velocity, and has solid upside as an SP.

Hesketh and Kasparek
Neither are special at all.

kasp
I think Kasparek could do something. Hesketh is a guy I like as an intiution pick.
by John Sickels on Jan 10, 2010 8:37 PM EST up reply actions
Personally, I would second dropping Hesketh
As an old college senior that looks like a future LOOGY or possible MR coming out of the draft, I would keep him off until he reaches higher levels. At lower levels I usually find write-ups on raw IFA or prep players more informative, ex Kenta Suda.
Kasparek definetly belongs on here.

As a Mariners fan, nice choices.

It will be interesting to see where you have Raben, Truinfel, and Liddi
Raben always had a special bat before being plague by injuries, but the system is not very deep in terms of impact hitting talent. I am of the belief that Trui is stagnating as a prospect right now, he needs to pick up his game and also learn to take a walk. I am really down on him.
Liddi is a controversial figure along with Dunigan( I am kind of suprised he is missing because he is supposed to be pretty toolsy if I remember right). I think he made genuine improvements from his 2007 and 2008 Wisconsin seasons, but that was really amplified by the High Desert Mirage. If he was in the FSL or CAR league, I think he would have hit around league average, which is pretty good considering his age. C+, maybe a C, depending on how much projection you think is left in him.
by tdot mariner fan on Jan 11, 2010 11:53 AM EST reply actions
I wouldn't...
call Raben’s bat “special.” He’s got a decent bat, but with his skill set, if he maxes out his potential he becomes the kind of player that there are 15-20 of every year: a great hitting 1B/Corner Outfielder with terrible defense.
Fair enough, I would say interesting would be the better word in retrospect
I will tell myself I was thinking special in terms of the Mariner’s hitting depth, in a self-depricating way.

Want to see how Triunfel and Halman rate
Halman’s Ks are freaking scary, but he’s got massive upside. Triunfel had that injury and power questions, but he’s got to get some perks for being an SS.
Somewhat of a weak system, but how the hell were the M’s able to get Cliff Lee without giving up one of Saunders or Triunfel? Massive head scratcher.

triunfel
if he stays at ss, that is.

He's been viewed as a 2B/3B for a little while now

I'd really like a little scouting report on Kenta Suda.
He’s a really interesting prospect. Still far away, but only 20 years old with great stuff. He has an electric fastball, good forkball, and a decent breaking pitch. His K rate in rookie ball is great, but his wildness is off the charts. 8 wild pitches, 10 walks, and a hit batter in just 37 and a third innings last season… but 36 strikeouts. He’s an interesting player with a lot of work ethic and a lot of upside, but I haven’t seen much written about him since he was signed by the Mariners a couple years ago. He may not crack the top 40, but he has a lot more upside than some of the players on it, even if the risk he doesn’t ever make it to AAA is tremendous.

suggestions
Suda and Dunigan are both interesting, but I’m up against some serious space limtations now. I’m going to have to delete guys I’ve already written about, so Suda, Dunigan, and personal sleeper Hesketh are all getting the axe from the list.
I’ve already written a comment for Baron but that’s likely to get cut too.
plan
My plan is to take all the guys I’m going to have to cut who already have comments written, put them in a seperate file, and do something with them. What I’m not sure.
