Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Micah Owings

Ok, I can't seem to figure out why this guy is still a pitcher.  His numbers as a pitcher are pretty terrible, whereas his career line is .296/.328/.538.  Granted it is in only in 169 at bats, but that is still something.  At the very least, I don't see why putting him in left field would be a terrible idea.  I mean, come on, is Wladimir Balentien much better?  I know Dusty Baker loves his draconian line ups, but the whole Owings pitching thing isn't working.  Plus, he has good size (6' 5'', 220), and was regarded as a very good hitter when drafted.  Am I crazy, or is this something that should be happening?

My understanding is that he's not really cut out for the outfield

And would be limited to first. Though my information may be wrong.

I kinda agree

I don’t believe he will be an effective starter long-term.

The question is, what kind of hitter will he be though? If he settles into a 4th OF type, isn’t he more valuable as a back-end rotation arm? I dunno, I’m torn on this.

I can’t help but be curious of what he is capable of with everyday ABs.

Agreed

Particularly if he can be a mediocre back of the rotation type who hits the way he does. He stretches an NL lineup in a way that no one else in the game does.

Yeah

but he also allows NL lineups to light him up in a way that few do

Lol

Very true. But I think the bar for him to be a passable back of the rotation guy is a bit lower than it is for most.

Then perhaps use him as a middle reliever

let him start the game in the OF, and be called upon to pitch when necessary

Almost....

For now, it looks like he is going to be a long reliever who is going to be given the chance to hit…. well, when he comes back after being beaned in the head.

Hitting Pitchers

There is a big difference in being a good hitting pitcher and being a good hitter.

Good

Those numbers are good but it is a small sample size. He only has around 170 at bats, so if he were to bat all the time and his weaknesses were exposed those numbers would not be nearly as good.

Or

if he would focus all of his time on hitting they would be even better.

had same convo

when he was a dback. when he came up in 2007 everyone here was asking the same thing, especially since we were in the middle of a pennant rae and our combo of Connor jackson/Tony clark at 1b couldn’t hit their way out of a paper bag. clark got hot in the stretch drive and talks of owings at 1b were put to rest.

i could see him having value as a #5 starter/swingman/long reliver/pinch hitter/backup 1b. I know that is a lot of roles, but considering how badly he has pitched since 2007, it might be he only shot at value

He's likely below average as a first baseman

That bar’s pretty high, especially when you have poor plate discipline.

That being said, sometimes guys do come around when they have a chance to concentrate on hitting.
