Wish Granted - Twins sign super prospect Sano

Wow, I didn't think the timing of this was possible....
But the 16 year old Dominican, is a big, young man for his age, or his supposed age...
He will probably move to 3rd or even 1st base, if not Left-Field but the Twins farm system just got a whole lot stronger and I am very pleased. Despite the issues involving his true age and even talent, I think this was a great move by GM Bill Smith and the Twins organization.
Miguel Angel Sano

Is this April 1st already?
I know the Twins were one of the early suitors, but to tell you the truth I thought he already signed. I wonder how John’s going to be able to grade him with his age in question and not having played in the states yet?
"I couldn't do that. Could you do that? Why can they do it? Who are those guys?"

C+ with potential
That’s how I view him at least. He obviously has a huge ceiling, but I don’t think you can go higher than that.
Good signing for the Twins

Where does he rank?
Where would you put him in the Twins top prospect rankings? and where does he begin next year? I realize we have very little info on him..looking for some opinions

in the ESPN Jose Arangure article
Miguel Sano is quoted saying,
“I’m very thankful to get this chance to sign with the Twins,” Sano told the Associated Press. “I’m going to work very hard to try to get to the majors in two years.”
Well, then that must answer a few questions, he must be 18, not 16. Who possibly thinks they can make the Major Leagues at 18 or even 19 years old?
Aparrently Sano ? Maybe arrogance?
I say he is just young and slightly big-headed

You really think that’s what it is?

lofty goal sure
but arrogance, no. nothing wrong with a little confidence, plus he obviously has no idea how talented the pitching he’s going to face is. to be honest, I wouldn’t want someone I was giving 3.15 mil to think he couldn’t make it in two years.

Yes.
But perception is what makes the term a negative or positive connotation.
Some people view arrogance as pompous or someone too full of themselves.
Some people view arrogance as moxie or someone full of confidence.
People in the first category are often people who are skeptics that require proof before accepting someone’s arrogance. People in the second category are often people who are optimists that want to see greatness grow before them.
I’m in both categories. I think he’s full of himself and has to prove it, but I also think it’s a good thing to set such lofty goals. After all, isn’t that the idea? To get to the majors? What player wouldn’t say they want to get to the majors in two years?
So, perception. It is the mother of controversy.
Fans are typically idiots.

The difference between, “I’m going to get to the majors in two years.” and “I’m going to work very hard to try to get to the majors in two years.” I think is the key.
I agree some people view arrogance as moxie, but I always felt there is a difference between confidence and foolhardiness. I think people confuse arrogance as both when they shouldn’t, it should only be viewed as the latter. perception indeed.

Depends on what he means by making the majors in two years
If he means two years from right now, it’s a bit ridiculous. If he means two years from the time he starts playing, that means maybe he’s a September call-up in two years, which, while extremely unlikely, is possible for a phenom.

Really surprised it was the Twins that signed Sano
They don’t strike me as an organization to take such a high dollar chance. It’s like getting a top 10 first round pick for the salary.
If MLB is so concerned about sign N. American players for over slot, what will it take for them to address the signing bonus issue in Latin America? Or Japan?
by daveyork on Sep 29, 2009 9:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm not
This is clearly a new Regime, a group headed By GM BIlly Smith and Rob Antony -player personnel guy.
The Twins were in the top 3 running all along from my point of view
behind the Pirates and their 2.6 M offer
and the St. Louis Cards and their 3.0 M offer…
it may be out of place or unusual for the Twins to offer 3.15 M for an international player but, I knew they were serious.
I liked the Max Kepler signing earlier this year as well.

Japan is more legit than Latin America
Considering that it’s a much more standardized system than Latin America. Latin American players get similar bonuses but their pay is based much more on raw scouting than on tangible in-game results.

all you’ve heard about is how they dont know how old he is. What kind of prospect is he? Does he have power? Is he a strong glove type? Speed? Are we talking Hanley Ramirez potential or Elvis Andrus potential?
by loop on Sep 29, 2009 9:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He's not a SS
He’s supposed to project as a strong bat and probably a corner outfielder. How good his bat will actually be is anyone’s guess.
by jar75 on Sep 29, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
body build
is probably going to be closer to Hanley Ramirez than Elvis Andrus…. However I Don’t see him being as good as Hanley Ramirez (obviously) or Elvis Andrus….
His potential may en lie to somebody more like Wilkin Ramirez.
but if it is at the SS position, the Twins would be thrilled with that…
if its going to be at a corner outfield position, obviously his bat would have to be a bigger upgrade than a wilkin ramirez…..

It's a little ridiculous to suggest you have an idea of a 16-year old's ceiling, at least to that degree.
by PissedMick on Sep 30, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well I suggest that I have no clue what his skill set really really really is
And I don’t know exactly how good of a player he will become

Bone grafs that he took said 16-17...
but then the question becomes do you trust the test or the people who did the test?

Gut instincts...
Obviously nobody can say how the kid will develop but looking at video on him my gut’s saying he profiles as an outfielder longterm.
