Discussion Question: Snider vs. Maybin

Which outfield prospect who struggled this year do you prefer for the next ten years: Cameron Maybin or Travis Snider?

Maybin is more athletic with more defensive value, but Snider has more power upside.

Maybin

In a heartbeat

Still only 21 years old, and has the power/speed potential, as well as defense. He is a Carlos Beltran in waiting.

Snider is a nice player, but I would take the 5 tool prospect potential of Maybin over a 1 to 2 tool guy like Snider.

On draft day 2005 I felt the same thing with Maybin vs Ryan Braun, would make the same choice today.

I agree that choosing Maybin over Braun in a heartbeat would border on ridiculous.

Maybin is 21, but still hasn’t proven himself in the majors. He is an unknown commodity whereas Braun is a top 30 hitter (according to WAR) and proved himself immediately at the age of 23. It seems like you would be willing to make an extreme gamble that no other general manager in baseball would dare to make.

Yeah But

He still has 2 years to reach the age that Braun was as a rookie.

Now taking the chance on a possible Carlos Beltran type of player over a proven commodity may be a bit foolhardy, but front office guys have to take that risk every day.

Youve got to stick with your gut on decsions like this. Braun is a 4 WAR guy, plain and simple, with an up or down year here and there. There has to be something said for waiting 2 years for a guy who is a 6 WAR year into his 30’s.

by backtocali on Sep 29, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

No

The point was that Maybin only has 1 year to reach where Braun was as a rookie (he will be 22 next year). I don’t think that any front office person would consider trading Braun for Maybin, expecially when you throw in Braun’s contract (which is second to only to Longoria for worst contract ever for a player). Braun’s value is as high as almost anyone in baseball, especially if an AL team could get their hands on him.

I really can't even imagine

a person in the world that would even consider Maybin over Braun. That is really one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard.

All because he has a chance to possible be Carlos Beltran? Yeah about a 1% chance.

Braun is already the best hitting LF in the game. His WAR is 31st right now, even though it drastically overrates defense (which I might add isn’t even a definate stat). Nyger Morgan has a higher WAR than Braun and that’s bullshit.

I originally thought Maybin...

…but on further review, I’m still skeptical of his hit tool. He did well to cut down on the strikeouts after his demotion to Triple-A, but the improved contact ability hasn’t exactly shone through after his recall (17 K in 69 AB, which is admittedly a small sample size). Obviously his full skill set and defensive ability is far superior to Snider, but I really do like Snider’s bat that much better. Just look, for a minute, what Snider has done at Age 21 in Triple-A this year…

.337/.431/.663 — 13.8% BB — 26.9% K — .326 ISO

Yeah, I know Las Vegas is a bandbox, but a .326 ISO is pretty damn impressive anywhere. I think Snider’s almost a surefire bet as a middle-of-the-order run producer, and I’ll take that over the greater upside — but riskier package — of Maybin.

Floor vs Ceiling

I’ll go with Maybin’s upside..

Not to Mention

Pretty damn accurate.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Maybin

I like his upside and think he can be a good leadoff hitter and CF. This was close though.

I voted for Cameron

Nice guy, but he’ll need to do a lot of work on his strikeout rate to be a leadoff guy. 2010 will be a big year for him, if the Marlins quit rushing him, I still think he can develop nicely.

Maybin looks like a .260 hitter with 10-12 HR's a year

Oh and he also doesn’t run well anymore. McCutchen is light years better than Maybin.

-1

that’s all I have to say about that.

I don’t think either will be great. I mean I don’t know if they will ever live up to much. I picked Snider because of the power. Maybin looks like he might bring a little athleticism though. Pretty tough. Snider could be more helpful though.

Snider

As a Jays fan, I have watched a lot of Snider this year. He has a bit too much swing-and-miss, which looks like its a by-product of needing work on pitch recognition. He has, however, shown a gradually more discerning eye towards the strike zone and is more willing (and able) to take a walk when given the opportunity to do so.
His power is unquestionable, and among the best I have ever seen. He can poke outside pitches into the second deck. While his power is his best tool, he is a solid corner outfielder with surprising (for his build) athleticism and speed.
Improved patience (and I do beleive it will come) will raise his game to greater heights and I think he will bust through next year (.275, 25HR, 85RBI range) next season.

Give me Maybin by a hair

He needs to cut down on strikeouts, yes. I was heartbroken when the Tigers traded him. I just think he has it; this guy will develop, and I think Carlos Beltran comps are absolutely valid after growing up watching Beltran in Kansas City.

Maybin will be a star. Bank it. But Snyder will be a great compliment to Lind as staples of the middle of that lineup as well.
