2009 MLB Re-Draft Top 10 - Include International Talent
Taking bonus demands and signability out of the mix while including this year's international talent (ex: Chapman, Iglesias, Mateo, etc.), what would your top 10 look like based on talent alone? I've included my shoddy attempt below.
1. Strasburg - RHP - College
2. Ackley - OF - College
3. Chapman - LHP - Cuba
4. Matzek - LHP - High School
5. Tate - OF - High School
6. Turner - RHP - High School
7. Wheeler - RHP - High School
8. Minor - LHP - College
9. Crow - RHP - Indepedent
10 Purke - LHP - High School

Not sure how White is in there, maybe if he was at like 10, but thats probably the highest I could see him. Then no Tate?
Talent alone...
White should be in there. I think my list would be the same except I would have purke behind Turner.
White
He had a up and down season, but he absolutely has the stuff to be a #2 starter. I realize that Cleveland has talked about using him as a reliever (and that would obviously kill his value), but I think that would be a mistake.
Hopefully I'm not hijacking or anything
But in a 10-team H2H dynasty league I have, I’m picking either 3rd or 4th in an upcoming first-year player draft (so 2009 draftees and new international signees).
Now, they have to be signed to an MLB team to be eligible, so no Chapman. Strasburg and Ackley are probably certs to go #1 and #2. Who do I pick at #3/#4? In a 10-teamer, things are really…shallow. I’ve got a stack of young pitching (Billingsley, Nolasco, Johnson, Kershaw, Holland, Cahill and Liriano if you want to count him) being backed up by Wandy and Carpenter. I also have a serious OF surplus with Sizemore, Bay, Werth, Ethier and Pence with Taylor, Jennings and Borbon all getting there.
Who do I pick after Strasburg and Ackley? Matzek? Crow? Turner?
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

I’d have Tate around 15 or so, but even that might be too high for me. For some reason I really think he’s going to bust.
Mitchell’s a personal favorite, and I could’ve gone with Leake or Wheeler there, but I wanted to get him in to the top 10.
does the twins signing sano
change anyone’s lists?
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Tate at 15? LOL
People have Tate so low because he’s an “athlete” and “athletes” can’t hit? Well, that’s proposterous. Lots of players get labeled “athlete” and do just fine. I guess the people on this site know more than real general managers.
Tate
As the draft approached, the word was that if the Padres didn’t grab Tate at 3, he could’ve easily fallen out of the first round. As a matter of fact, in one of his last mock drafts, Keith Law had him doing just that. I’m not purporting I know as much as real GMs, I’m just saying I think all of these other players are “surer” things than Tate is. It’s not that I don’t think he’s talented, it’s that I think his potential to bust is higher than most.
Frankly, after Strasburg/Ackley/Chapman, my list is quite fungible – there’s a tier of about 12 players or so that I have rated pretty closely.
Ackley vs. Chapman...
…seems to be the interesting choice. Do you go with the known quantity, the safer choice or the lesser known quantity that brings greater risk but perhaps a much bigger upside?
maybe he's underrated....
nobody really knows

30 to 40 mill
to start the bidding…???/
overrated as it gets.
have you forgotten that dice-k cost 100 million
to barely be a rotation pitcher….hard to be more overrated than that

Since when
did the number of dollars you sign for make you overrated?
A bust? Perhaps, but DiceK is not overrated. Everybody knows exactly what to expect when he takes the mound.

i'd say that signing for 100 million
and ending up being a ‘rotation guy’ means that at one point he was overrated…..
probably not overrated now, but at the same point as we are with chapman…its hard to be more overrated

You have
zero idea what he’ll sign for, yet he’s overrated because he might get more money than your comfortable with.
Awesome.

Is Overrated the appropriate term?
He has been #2 or #3 on every list. Therefore either everyone is overrating him or he is appropriately placed. I think, however, you could make the case that he will be OVERPRICED because he is a 21 year old true free agent.
