Harper
Is it a guarantee the Nats take him No. 1?
by woobie on Sep 26, 2009 2:11 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nope.
A year ago Matt Harvey was considered the no-doubt #1 guy in this class before Harper moved ahead a year. Now Harvey’s probably not even a first-rounder. One season can change things a lot.

I think Harvey will be a 1st rder
unless something goes wrong again this season.
He has far too much talent to slip too far.

No.
He isn’t a clear cut #1. I think he has the talent to be a great catcher but I don’t agree with some people who are saying he is a once in a lifetime talent. I think they will more likely take someone a little cheaper and guaranteed to sign since the Storen pick has paid off very well so far. I don’t agree with that route, it is just a feeling.

I wouldn't say...
Harvey’s not a first rounder, but his stock has fallen a lot. Also, why is Sonny Gray on your list? He is not elgible for the draft this year.

I'd say Harvey's out now.
He’s way, way down. Probably second round taking out the Boras factor.

pomeranz is good but not the best pitcher availalbe and he’s not a top 5 talent. he’s more in the 15-20 range. taillon is eeasily the best pitching prospect in this draft

Don't forget Ranaudo.

You mean their status on draft days?
I’d go with Matusz. Ranaudo’s a big kid, but most of his value is in durability with good, not great, stuff. If he were to add 2-3 MPH consistently on his fastball, then I’d definitely go with Ranaudo.

Pomeranz
I think you could make a case for him being top 10, second is clearly too high. I also think Taillon is easily the top pitcher.

Actually,
I’ve seen a few places with him very high. Even a former mlb scout ranking him #1 ahead of Harper and Tallion.

When did you hear this?
I was hearing much better stuff about him earlier in the spring than later. Not that he was bad or anything, just that more eyes saw him and that naturally shows more weaknesses. I have him anywhere from 5-12 because of the college lefty fetish that tons of teams have.

pomeranz
i have heard that pomeranz is a lot like his older brother as far as mentality and preparation, and that isn’t a good thing

The Rangers selected
Both Pomeranz and Renaudo out of high school but failed to sign them. Arghhhhh.

Can someone explain the appeal of Ranaudo to me?
Honest question, not being snarky. I watched him in the CWS and he had a high-80s fastball and little else; he couldn’t locate a breaking ball at all.
Was he just exhausted at the end of the season? He looked like a double-digit rounder to me, not top 5 overall.

He is 6'6", 220..
so he has the body of a workhorse. He has a power sinker and has better contol than he showed in the CWS. He’s not a guy who is going to blow you away sitting 88-92, but he has good life and deception coming stright over the top. He also has a hard breaking CB that could be a plus big league offering. If he can have just an average change, he should be a solid MLB starter for a long time.

He was worn out by the CWS
he was throwing in the low to mid 90’s at the start of the season

Taillon
is the best high school player so he should be higher and Brentz should be higher as well

What player should the Nats pick at #1 overall
If I was picking today. I would have to go with Bryce Brentz 1st overall.

gotta be Harper
Even if you don’t think he’s quite the legend-in-the-making that the hype pieces have him made out to be, he still fits the organizational profile far better than anybody else. The Nats love ultra-toolsy player and don’t really care about polish. Harper is so young that it’s hard to say exactly how refined his game is going to look against pro competition, but he’s got great tools.
I know he’s going to cost a lot of money, but as this year’s draft showed, it’s not like anybody at the top of the draft comes cheaply.

Collegiate corner outfielders don't go #1...
He doesn’t have a once-in-a-generation bat, so it won’t happen.

My top 50

Harper is the #1 talent for sure but . . .
lots can happen between now and June. We have seen top talent slide due to signability, attitude, etc. The Nationals went after Strasburg and all the hype but Harper could have more. At least Strasburg backed it up on the field at the collegiate level. Harper is a high school junior – we’ll see.
The longer a guy is the obvious #1 the more reasons people find not to like him.
For the record, I do believe that Harper will the overall #1 even the Nats picking.
by daveyork on Sep 29, 2009 5:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Okay the question is
With the #1 pick. Do the Nats draft the best pitcher available too pair with Strasburg or do they go with a high ceiling position player. I don’t know. A one,two pitching punch can take a team pretty far.
Be real with yourself.

If they can afford it
they take Harper, no question about it

harper
would he be the biggest question mark as the number 1 pick ever?
by matthewmafa on Sep 29, 2009 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He certainly would not be the worst number 1 pick ever
And by worst I don’t mean the worst career, I mean the worst #1 choice at the time of the draft given all of the information available (see Matt Bush, Bryan Bullington). So I doubt he’d be classified as the “biggest question mark”, however you’d want to define that phrase.

Good list. I think Sonny Gray’s 2011 rather than 2010.
I think the top 5 likely includes Harper, Raunado, Talleon and Cole at this point. Not sure of the 5th.
I think Castellanos, Workman, Harvey and Keyes are too high.
Imo Chris Sale (consider the dearth of LHP), Washington, McGuire, Sabel, Cabrera and Justin O’Connor should be higher.
