very tough one.

I went with Fowler because he’s still a new switch hitter, and I like his progress this year… I think his peak will be better than Rasmus

Close, I chose Rasmus

He can be above average to outstanding in many aspects. As soon as he gets a little better at pitch selection in the Majors, he can be a monster, especially if he starts stealing bases.

Close

But Rasmus’s defense wins over.

Rasmus

The Pirate fan in me would’ve preferred a McCutchen vs. Rasmus debate.

The answer is still Rasmus

the fantasy owner who has both

would have liked this too

"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

From what I’ve seen this year, Fowler was a lot more impressive. With his speed and plate discipline, he’ll be an outstanding player if he develops power.

I’m also a McCutchen fan wondering how he compares to Fowler and Rasmus. The Pirate wasn’t as highly regarded coming into this season, but does the superior rookie season make enough difference?

I think...

McCutchen is better than both. Good defense, good plate discipline, good power, good speed, and good at well everything.

Except that

Rasmus plays better defense (GG caliber), showed much better plate discipline throughout their time in the minors, and has more power.

GG caliber?

Watch him play. He routinely takes bad routes to balls and his arm isn’t outstanding either.

Yeah

Rasmus is going to be a top defender imo. He may frustrate at the plate for a couple of years a la Jay Bruce (long periods of indiscriminate pitch selection), but he looks like an All-Star caliber player every time I see him.

Fowler

They’re the same age, Fowler has produced much better in the bigs, and I prefer the known quantity over projection when I think players are close. Rasmus could easily become Grady Sizemore, but I’m just not 100% sold on his plate discipline right now. I’d prefer a guy who I think can lead off, steal 40 bags, hit 12-20 home runs and get on base at a .375-.390 clip at his peak – and I think Fowler is more likely to realize that peak. Fowler’s 6-4, 185 – he’s got some room to fill out yet.

I think they’re both going to be very good to great players. I prefer the surer thing.

Well

It would help Rasmus a lot if he played for a manager that would actually let him steal a base every once in a while.

Fowler

I’ll take the one who turned down a full ride to an IVY league school any day.

Fowler is SMART.

so Einstein

would’ve been a better hitter than, say, Manny Ramirez?

Perhaps

If he had the same access to female fertility drugs…but he was so smart he might’ve come up with some superior performance enhancement drugs on his own.
