Community Prospect List - Angels
Another very difficult list for me. To be honest, I really don't say very much talent in the system at all. It's gone a long way from being top 5 several years in a row earlier in the decade. I'm pretty sure my list will be way off, and as with the Mariners, I reserve the right to change my list at any time. 130 AB, 50 IP limits as usual.
1. Will Smith
2. Hank Conger
5. Mike Trout
Skaggs, Bell, and Grichuk are other intriguing names.

What's Your List?
Trout and Martinez Mesa lost points for level. Reckling is 21 or so in AA, which is great, plus he has decent stuff. He performed well except for terrible control. Smith got some real hype from a big Angels prospect site last year, and I see it coming through.

They just had, what, six first-round picks?
Almost impossible for them not to get some amount of MLB talent out of that.
(By the way, this sort of thing is an excellent argument for why free-agent compensation picks should be abolished or altered. The way the system works now, it’s actually the big-market teams that benefit the most from them.)

Conger
Reckling
Walden
Bourjos
Trout
Can’t understand why Conger isn’t getting more attention this year. He’s a 21-year-old catcher who held his own offensively and defensively in AA (Carlos Santana was 23 this year at the same level). He stayed healthy, showed improvement behind the plate – he caught 30% of basestealers and only allowed a few passed balls, though he did commit too many errors -, hit lefties well and put up a 68 SO/55 BB ratio. He only hit 11 homeruns, but was in a miserable offensive home park. He’s a top prospect.
Reckling and Walden both have huge question marks now, but their upside is mid- to high- rotation, and neither guy is that far off. Bourjos has made huge strides over the past two years, making a lot of solid contact in ‘08, and adding plate discipline this year. He needs to hit righties better and add some homerun pop, but has shown the capacity to add skills every year, so I think he still has a decent shot at becoming a regular. Trout’s ceiling could be much higher, or it could be where Bourjos is at now – let’s see how he does in full season ball. I also think people continue to unfairly discount Grichuk – the guy was a beast in rookie ball, getting significantly better in each month.
agreed on conger
catcher. improved his approach miles this year all while making the jump to AA. hit almost .300. not a ton of power yet but he’s got some in the tank. not sure his time will come with the Angels with Napoli entrenched…but he’s good.
baseball rules.
Napoli entrenched
Too bad Scioscia would rather play Jeff “Bank a .600 OPS” Mathis.
Re Bourjos
How much value does a right-handed Jacoby Elsburry have? The comparison isn’t dead on, obviously, but I’m curious.
Right...
A player with the same skills, but with the mlb-average splits. Obviously less valuable, but is he still a regular?
crap
i didn’t realize his platoon split was so severe. OPS is .350 points higher vs LHP
that’s not going to cut it as a starter unless he really improves. could still have plenty of value as a platoon guy and 4th OF, though.

Grichuk
Maybe the .418 BABIP and 64/9 K/BB has something to do with it…
The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...

17 and second in his league in total bases
That’s a lot of hard contact. I’ll take that over polish from a kid without his draft card any day of the week.
My list
Wow this system looks much weaker than I thought.
1. Conger – Huge strides in bb’s this year, like Bourjos.
2. Reckling – young, in AA, solid enough season.
3. Walden – he is what he is – if he was healthy all year, probably would’ve slid him ahead of Reckling.
4. Trout – too much potential compared to the rest that the level difference isn’t enough for me to drop him for now.
5. Bourjos – huge strides in bb’s this year.
Smith/Skaggs would follow, at first glance.
1. Reckling
2. Walden
3. Smith
4. Trout
5. Conger
Reckling doesnt have great stuff, but he’s the best of guys with decent ceilings and seemingly the only one who hasnt had performance or injury issues in 09. If Conger can stay behind the plate he would shoot way up, but I dont think he can and the risk of him moving to 1B is frightening. He may not even be a major leaguer over there. Pretty poor system right now, but reloaded with all those picks. Make or break kind of year for lots of guys… be very interesting to see where they are a year from now.
