Hudson or Hellickson?
Two rapidly rising prospects this year Daniel Hudson of the ChiSox and Jeremy Hellickson of the Rays. same age, different paths (high school v college). both with good but not crazy good stuff, and both with fairly dominant performances in the high minors this year. both about ready to be regular big leaguers (within a year or so...). If you can have one or the other...who you taking?

I'm intrigued with Hudson
but the scouting reports on Hellickson seem to be better, and there’s more to judge Hellickson off of, thus leaning Hellickson now.
Great question.
I struggled with this, but went with Hellickson in the end. The longer track record played a role, but the deciding factor for me was that reading what scouts say, it sounds like Hellickson might be the best in the minors at mixing his pitches.
Not a knock on Hudson, by any means — it’s virtually a toss-up between the two.
BTW
Hellickson was fantastic tonight in the AAA championship game- I imagine we get to see him throw-in-the-show a bit now right?

Not on the 40-man roster
so he won’t get a cup of coffee.

3 to 1 so far
a little surprised its that much for hellickson. i think personally i would vote hellickson over hudson, but it would be close in my mind. is that how people are feeling too? or is the 3:1 ratio indicative of a larger perceived gap between the two?
I think
the talent is probably much closer than the voting indicates, but I also think Hellickson is clearly ahead as of right now.
In a year or two’s time, who knows. I could Hudson developing into a better starter. Just … as of now, Hellickson has a longer track record of success, seems more advanced in his arsenal.
The vote reflects the overall unfamiliarity with Hudson.
Their talent levels are a lot closer than that votes makes it look. It’s just that Hellickson’s been a decent prospect for years, and people are excited with the step up he seems to have made this year.
Hellickson has one of the best change-ups in the minors
throw in an above average fastball and breaking ball and a sinker that is developing quite well and he may be one of the top 5-10 pitching prospects in all of baseball. If he has a big spring and start to the 2010 season in AAA it will be hard for the Rays to keep him in AAA despite 5 pretty good MLB starters in Price, Garza, Shields, Davis, and Niemann.

That's awesome
but do you know anything about Hudson?

Doesn't matter
Haven’t you heard, Hellickson has 3 above average pitches with a fourth on the way!

are you saying that Hellickson doesn't have 3 above average pitches?
Yes I am a little biased but watching him pitch I’m not sure how you could call his fastball/change-up/breaking ball only average.
Jennings, Hellickson, Davis, Brignac, Beckham, Moore > Your top 3
no I don't
but that doesn’t change my statement. Heck maybe Hudson is a top 10 pitching prospect I don’t know.
