Dan Hudson on his way to the Majors?

http://scottmerkin.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/09/dan_hudson_on_the_way.html

Daniel Hudson will be promoted to the major leagues by the White Sox, according to a report by MLB.com.

"When they told me, I did a double-take. They had to tell me twice before I believed them," Hudson said. "It's an awesome feeling. Just an amazing feeling." Hudson, a 2008 fifth-round pick out of Old Dominion, has blitzed through Chicago's farm system this year. Between four stops, he is 14-5 with a 2.32 ERA in 26 starts. At Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte, he was 9-0 with a 2.02 ERA. Hudson has solid middle-of-the-rotation potential. He could become relevant in AL-only formats if given a spot in the rotation.

The guy flat out dominated at every level this year. Do you agree with the estimation here that he has the ceiling of a middle of the rotation starter, or does he have ace potential?

good slider, good build… early scouting reports showed him having trouble with lefties due to lack of changeup, but on the year they’re hitting .160, so apparently he’s figured it out

he’s still young, so let him get his taste of the big leagues this fall… middle – back end guy

I don't like his slider

It barely moves; just drops a little down

His fastball is nice, though — has some late life, and can touch 95-96/

I’m sure you’re right (I’m not too familiar with Sox prospects) but the two scouting reports i saw had him barely touching 90s… where did you read/see the 95-96 reports?

Well, I saw him hit 96

on MiLB.tv, according to the Durham Bulls stadium gun.

It could have been an mph or 2 fast, IDK.

Also, he kinda just chucked that particular pitch like he was drunk or some shit.

It wasn’t even remotely close to the zone.

nevermind… i did another quick search and saw some BA stuff and another report on a Sox site that had him in the low 90’s (up to 94)

saw some video on him

he has a weird 3/4 sort of sidearmed delivery. Could be part of the reason he gets so many K’s. I don’t know. For someone who barely sits in the low 90’s, something’s gotta give. He’s dominated every level, his stuff has to be somewhat decent.

slightly funky delivery and success

Rzepczynski is another guy with just average (maybe a tad below?) velocity but kind of a funky delivery has fooled hitters as a rook, albeit as a southpaw. I think if Hudson can touch mid 90’s with the heat and life on it, it can be a plus pitch even for righty. I’m really thinking he can have No.2-3 potential.

Plus Plus fastball velocity isn't everything.

Tim Lincecum of all people has sat at 92 and touched 94 this year.

more like 93 and 97

plus he throws the ball from 50’5 and not 60’5 like everyone else

Have you been watching him pitch this year???

PissedMick is right — Lincecum has been 91-93 the whole year.

but he can still touch 96

and still throws an average fastball of 92.5 mph… so not really 91-93

Hudson...

Can we keep the conversation about him? Lincecum is a beast, there’s no question. Lets talk about Hudson. Anyone see his MLB debut last night? How did he look? What did he throw?

Shucks, yo

I was watching the game, but I turned it off because the White Sox were defecating all over the Red Sox.

Looked solid...

Although it was mop up time, as Boston had put in all their reserves by about the 4th inning… as it was 12-1. He had pretty good sink on his fastball which was sitting at 93 consistently, and a bit deceptive with his semi-funky deliver. He retired 6 of 7 guys, after going 0-2 on his first batter he ended up drilling him in the foot, but sat the rest down in order. Was getting ahead of guys early, and had great command. Didnt get a good read on secondary stuff, as he threw mostly fastballs however. Very excited about this youngster

I think Lincecum is gonna have a fine career

Sure he’s struggled throughout his first few seasons, but that’s understandable given his young age and limited minor league experience. He’s got the stuff to maybe win a Cy Young award some day.

And Hudson has had an amazing breakout this year, I hope he can keep up the success.
