Giants Calling Up Buster Posey for tonight!

Being reported on mlbtraderumors.com  that the Giants are calling up Posey for tonight.  Very excited and I hope he gets some consistent at bats for the rest of the year.  I know he has a lot of fans on here and he has performed so well this year that lets hope he hits the ground running tonight!

projections?

What do people project as Posey’s ceiling? What kind of numbers can we expect in his prime, and in the next couple of years?

In lieu of venturing my own guess, I’ll just rip off BP’s peak translations.

Cal League: .292/.387/.492 (.303 EqA)
Pacific Coast League: .286/.368/.496 (.293 EqA)

Either of those seems fair to me. I think it’ll take him a few years to consistently reach those heights, but I have faith he’ll do it. Numbers like that will make him a perennial All-Star and a middle of the order force — quite a valuable commodity for a catcher. He’s the third best prospect in baseball in my book (behind Heyward and Stanton).

Wait till Shawon Dunston gets his claws into him

I’m sure he can bring that OBP down to a cool .310 or so. After all, if you want to see walks, go watch the mailman!

He’s starting tomorrow

Great move

Just in time for me to see him on Friday in Milwaukee.

I would say his projection is that of an all star catcher. Good defense, which still needs a little bit of work, but the bat is solid.

I know its a huge projection, but I would say a Joe Mauer type with power. Maybe not as high of a batting average, with defense progressing along as the years go.

Ok

So more power and less batting average than Joe Mauer meaning not like Joe Mauer.

He needs to work on his game calling a bit more

Otherwise, he’s looking like a good catcher.

so...

he’s going to have more power than the guy who is currently leading the AL in slugging? that is huge… potentially large, even.

I like Lyle Overbay as a comp

Good average, knows how to take a walk, gap power but can also get the ball over the wall. Obviously as a catcher that skill set is considerably more valuable than that coming from a first baseman

Isnt that

AJ Pierzinski? Not that that is a bad thing. Just not what I would call “awesome”

Posey will probably be a better player than AJ Pierzinski

by casejud on Sep 3, 2009 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Have you ever looked at Pierzynski's numbers?

His OBP is 40 points lower than Overbay’s and his SLG is 20 points lower. So no, not really the same player at all. More like Russell Martin when he was good.

by Fanon on Sep 3, 2009 3:31 AM EDT up reply actions

russells best year was

.293 .374 .469 .843 with 19 homers 21 SB and 32 Doubles

damn i wish we had that russell martin back and not the .258 .356 .325 .681 one he is now…

by matthewmafa on Sep 3, 2009 3:51 AM EDT up reply actions

yes

i wish the dodgers had the awesome catcher… and not jason kendal jr…

by matthewmafa on Sep 3, 2009 4:12 AM EDT up reply actions

What the hell happened, anyway?

I used to live in Montreal, so I’ve always been a huge fan of Martin’s, but I haven’t heard any speculation as to what exactly has gone wrong. Because clearly, something has. Any ideas from Dodgerdom?

by Fanon on Sep 3, 2009 5:58 AM EDT up reply actions

He quit drinking and partying

And all work and no play make Russell Martin go something something….

Answer

He’s got Geovanny Soto disease.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

by WayneCampbell08 on Sep 3, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really fair,

Soto’s had an injury-plagued year and just never really got going… Martin’s been obviously abused and that has led to his quick demise.

torre happened

maybe it wasn’t a good idea to try to play martin 162 games a year.

Oh

You mean he was Scott Proctored.

I'd be shocked if it was because of the molina injury

re What's a Molina

according to dictionary.com:

Mo⋅li⋅na
  /moʊˈlinə, mə-; Sp. mɔˈlinɑ/
–noun
1. Lu⋅is  /luˈis/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [loo-ees] Show IPA , 1535–1600, Spanish Jesuit theologian.
2. Tirso de. Tirso de Molina.

I don’t think that’s injured. So why was Posey called up?

well that explains it.

Molina died four centuries ago. Man the Giants do react quickly.

I’m relatively certain it was in his contract that he had to get a cup of coffee in the big leagues by 2010.

I’ve never heard anything like that and if it were true, I think the Giants wouldn’t have been so adamant all year that they weren’t going to call him up this year. (The reason they’re changing their mind is that they’re apparently pissed off at Molina.)

or maybe Molina's hurt :-)

that’s not a smile for him being hurt – it’s in reference to the above posts

by rmarx on Sep 2, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Just in case Molina goes down, then the backup Whiteside goes down, then their three emergency catchers go down as well.

I don't see a problem with letting him get a taste of the playoff race

Particularly on a team with a lot of guys who have been there before.
