Community Team Lists - Washington Nationals

Just an Idea I had. We post our top 5 lists for each team. I'll put together the combined list on a 5-4-3-2-1 point scale. I'll try to stay on top of it and post one a day. 130 AB/50 IP cutoffs. I'll post the final lists at the end of all the teams.

1. Stephen Starsburg

2. Derek Norris

3. Chris Marrero

4. Drew Storen

5. Danny Espinosa

Decent list...

Nationals are slowly building up some decent talent. Of course everyone already knows how great Strasburg is, but Derek Norris has some very good power for a catcher and Chris Marrero has had a pretty good year. I could see the Nationals having a few decent years coming up pretty soon. A good rotation with Lannan, Strasburg, Zimmerman, Detwiler, and Balister should help them become competitive.

The Point Of This

Is to get you to post your OWN lists.

Then I’ll compile scores to make an overall list.

Norris

I love how much he walks. Very few guys in the minors or majors walk as much as him…

1. Strasburg

2. Norris

3. Espinosa

4. Hood

5. Storen

I’ve never been a big fan of Marrero and I think Hood’s just waiting for a breakout. Really like the potential there.

Hmm

Forgot about Espinosa and Hood.

Hmm…

Probably have them both over Desmond. Espinosa first though.

I'm not overly familiar with the org. at the lower levels

but I think you are pretty close to what I would have.

1. Strasburg
2. Norris
3. Desmond
4. Espinosa
5. Marrero

Only Top Five?

1. Strasburg
2. Norris
3. Marrero
4. Espinosa
5. Desmond

6. Storen
7. Hood
8. Burgess

Desmond over Storen

The toughest call, in my opinion. Desmond finally broke through offensively and has a glove. Storen has only been pitching in the pros for a few months, although he has done well and up to AA.

Only 5

Because it will get more people to do it. Plus, the final list won’t just be 5. It’ll be EVERYONE included, so some teams could have up to like 10.

I get why it's five...

The Nationals have a pretty set six or seven guys. I don’t see Destin Hood top 5 on many peoples list.

by byronlhsdrmr on Sep 15, 2009 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions

My list

1.) Stephen Strasburg: (Future Ace. Best prospect in Baseball)
2.) Danny Espinosa: (One of the best SS prospects in baseball….surprising power to go along with 20 SB steal and plus defense. Will take a walk.)
3.) Derek Norris: (Waiting to see how he does in A+ and AA, but looks GREAT.)
4.) Chris Marrero: (Return to grace this year, could be an offensive monster in the future.)
5.) Destin Hood: (MASSIVE ceiling, still pretty raw.)

Hood

I do really like Destin Hood, but Ian Desmond had a great name.

Strasburg
Norris
Desmond
Espinosa
Marrero

by JJACK on Sep 14, 2009 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

me too

Desmond took a while, but has less of a K issue than Espinosa. Storen isa reliever, so I had Marrero ahead.

Me 3 (or 4?) (or 5?)

I think it’s 4. Whatever it is, I’ve got it the same way below, for the reasons you mentioned, wobatus.

Suggestions For Tomorrow?

I’m thinking I’ll go down the NL East.

My top 4

would be like several other’s … Strasburg, Norris, Espinosa, Storen.

I’m not really sure on the 5th. I guess the upside of Hood or Marrero fit in there, but I don’t really love them. I also think Meyers is a tad underhyped.

Anyhow, this sounds like it could be an interesting thing to try to segueway into whenever someone wants to kickstart the community prospect list this offseason.

I Say Wait

For the community list. Fall leagues made huge differences in rankings last year. Look at hanson.

Mine

Strasburg
Norris
Marrero
Storen
Desmond

I am so not on the Espinosa bandwagon and I know it. He’s looked good, but to me, I’m maybe overly cautious of the low BA and high K ratio. Then again, I was worried about Chris Carter the same way and look what happened…

by thudean on Sep 15, 2009 8:24 AM EDT reply actions

Forget about offense for a second

Espinosa has some of the best defense for a SS in all the minor leagues. That alone makes him very valuable.

Be real with yourself.

by Daggerrrrrr on Sep 15, 2009 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Fine

So that puts his floor as an all glove-backup infielder. All glove, no-hit guys get what, a C? So, based on offense potential, he’s about a C+ for me. Good potential, some worries that I mentioned, good-great defense. I may be convinced to move him up a half grade or so (which could vault him over Desmond) if I find a convincing enough scouting report on his hitting ability that suggests he could overcome his current flaws.

mine

Strasburg
Storen
Norris
Espinosa
Marrero

by The Gottfather on Sep 15, 2009 9:10 AM EDT reply actions

I've said this several times

but it still irks me to no end that the Nats, whose minor league operations are on the upswing, wouldn’t even take a peek at Storen as a starter. What’s the hurt in that? If he fails, move him back to the pen and fast track it, as we know he’s close to pen ready for a big league job. You should always try your best arms as starters. (In interviews, Storen’s basically said that the Nats have told him he’ll be in the pen next year, so I’m not really expecting them to try starting him next year).

by toonsterwu on Sep 15, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

Strasburg
Norris
Desmond
Espinosa
Marrero

I’m not actually that high on Marrero, but I can’t justify leaving off a guy who has a reasonable shot to be an everyday player for a reliever. I love Espinosa’s upside, but I’m afraid his swing-and-miss could derail his ability to hit at higher levels, so I went with Desmond — who has less upside, but is more of a “sure thing” — ahead of him.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 15, 2009 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

You have to understand

This is Espinosa 1st full year. He will be even better next year. As far as his bat goes. This year he had changed his swing so he can hit with more power, but in doing so his avg fell. So next year I expect him to hit around .290 in AA. And I will be looking to see what he does in the AFL

Be real with yourself.

by Daggerrrrrr on Sep 15, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand that...

…but while it was Espinosa’s first full pro season, he did play at a major college program for 3 years. He had a nice debut, with greater patience and power than you’d have expected based on his college numbers, but a 27.2% K rate is still a bit disconcerting. Remember: the jump to Double-A is the toughest in the minors, and he’ll need to work on cutting down on the strikeouts if he’s going to have success going forward.

1. Strasburg
2. Norris
3. Desmond
4. Burgess
5. Hood

by WrenFGun on Sep 15, 2009 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

Storen and Espinosa snubbed

I kind of like that someone did this. I think Hood and Burgess deserve at least a mention, both have quite a bit of upside to them. I like Hood more than Burgess though.

by byronlhsdrmr on Sep 15, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Like I believe someone above mentioned (Toonster, possibly), I was disappointed they didn’t start Storen. It’s a minor quibble, but I don’t think he really dominated the competition in terms of strikeouts at his higher levels, either. He was dominant in the SAL but right around a K per inning, which is fine, but it’s not exactly Daniel Bard, which is what I want for a top 5 guy.

Espinosa is tougher but it’s just a gut feel that he’s kind of at his peak. From a pure production standpoint, he should be on this list. Burgess’ potential is really huge and he needs to work on making good contact but he’s very young. The swing is long but he’s got plenty of time to fix it and the Nats should bet on what he has shown (good ability to walk and hit for power). Hood’s rookie ball performance was real nice and he’s got a nice set of tools. You could argue Espinosa, probably correctly, depending on what you want to emphasize. I’d no doubt take Burgess over Hood, IMO.

by WrenFGun on Sep 16, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Minor quibble myself, but Storen did whiff 26 (against 0 walks) in 14.2 SAL innings. He followed it up with around a K per inning across High-A and Double-A (23:8 K:BB in 22.1 IP).

That being said, I agree with your basic premise — that I’d rank a guy with a reasonable shot to be an everyday player above a reliever.

by PhillyFriar on Sep 17, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I find it kind of funny

That you guys are mentioning Ian Desmond in the Nats top 5. Not too long ago, wasn’t nobody talking about him being one of the better Nats prospects. It only took him to get to the big leagues to show people he was a true SS prospect. It’s good to see that people are finally coming around to this kid.

Be real with yourself.

by Daggerrrrrr on Sep 15, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

Umm... no

Desmond has been looked at as a prospect for years. A few years ago people pegged him as the future SS for Washington. Problem is, during the ensuing years, he did nothing to support the positive feedback. He played well in 2007 after repeating High-A for the third consecutive, played poorly in 2008, and then rebounded in 2009. When you repeat a level 3 times before getting it right, even at a young age, people become skeptical.
