Seth Smith in 2010

2009 Stats: .311/.397/.549/.947

Seth Smith is finally getting some much deserved regular playing time from manager Jim Tracy.  My concern is that with a crowded outfield in Colorado (Brad Hawpe, Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzalez), something has gotta give eventually.  Who do you believe will be the odd man out?  Carlos Gonzalez has nothing left to prove in the minors, Dexter Fowler seems capable of holding his own in the majors, and Brad Hawpe is Rox middle of the order run producer.  Where does that leave Seth Smith?  Smith can definitely hit and deserves to be in the lineup on a regular basis now and heading into next season.  Is there a strong possibility that Brad Hawpe will be traded during the offseason?  In my opinion, that's the only way Smith will be guaranteed everyday playing time next season.

What do you project for the future of the Rox OF?

If Smith were to eventually receive 500+ ABs/season, what kind of stats can he produce?  .300+ 25-30 HR?

In 401 MLB ABs (career), Smith has a .307/.392/.534/.926 line with 19 HRs.

hawpe is the most expensive of the group

and closer to free agency so you would think he might the choice

I can't see Hawpe having much (if any) trade value in this market

It will be pretty easy to find someone to provide his total production at a much cheaper salary. Although saying that, I feel like we’ll be seeing Hawpe in a blue uniform in western Missouri next season.

hawpe's gotta go

he’d be a great fit in the AL for any team looking for a DH/OF. for COL, if you factor in his atrocious defense, he’s not more valuable than fowler or c-gon. even spilborghs is a decent OF.

i’d go with a younger, more athletic, better at defense OF that seems to be the trendy thing these days. take whatever i can get for hawpe – the lesson from atkins is not to wait too late to trade a guy.

actually the more I think about it

His OBP is way too high. I think you’re safe.

Can he play first?

This ability tends to strongly influence Dayton Moore’s personnel decisions.

I know some Mets fans

Who wanted to give up F-Mart or Holt for him earlier this season.

Thankfully, Omar is smarter than your average Mets fan.

I wouldn't go that far

Omar isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed

Have you Met the average Mets fan?

They make me disinclined to root for my team. Always with the trade Reyes or Wright for Todd Helton.

Less home runs

Smith doesn’t have a home run swing (though he does have homerun power). He is a guy who insists on maintaining a line drive gap to gap type of approach and just happens to hit home runs at times. This isn’t a bad thing but just don’t expect him to start pulling the ball as he matures (like many hitters with his type of strength do).

Hawpe is the obvious choice to go but the Rockies is in love with his character and his ‘reliability’ much like they were with Atkins last year and will hold on to him until he hits free agency. They also don’t want to be perceived as selling off veterans.

He's decent, imo

I don’t think he sustains that kind of line over the course of the year.

Realistically, if given 500+ ab’s, I’d think the following line more appropriate (assuming he would hit 2-3 and not 6-8):

18-23hr’s, 80-85 runs, 65-70 rbi’s, .280-.285 avg.

what do ppl think

about a Michael Cuddyer like comp?

by MightyMoose on Sep 14, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't like it

I think Smith should be the starter though in 2010. Maybe they should try to trade Fowler for as much as they can get. If the front of their order starts with EY jr and CarGo then he’s somewhat expendable. I bet a lot of teams would be interested in him and CarGo.
