Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Is there any doubt Jason Heyward is the top prospect in baseball?

Today is his 20th birthday and Jason Heyward continues to prove that he's the top prospect in baseball. After an impressive debut season, he's taken it to another level this year with his power really developing. Although it's only been 30 games at AA, Heyward has been out of this world at the level typically considered a proving ground for prospect legitimacy.

I dare anyone to find a prospect better than Jason Heyward.

Of course

First, because no one matches both his ceiling and his floor, IMO. He projects to have almost Stanton and Carter’s power with the SO. He his for great average. He is a 5 tool player, though the speed probably won’t be used to SB later on.

Hot streak

Dude’s on a hot streak right now that’s it. Let’s see how he looks once he’s cooled down

by FanBall on Aug 9, 2009 12:41 PM EDT reply actions

Obviously he's not this good, but

how many other prospects could even put up these sort of numbers on a hot streak over the course of an entire month playing in a neutral league and playing their home games in a big time pitcher’s park? Its not just the obvious numbers either, the underlying stats are incredibly impressive as well. Seriously, since moving up to AA he has 12 SO compared to 17 BB and 19 XBH. That’s just insane for someone his age, at his level, with his skill set.

true, but...

This much of a hot streak right away moving up a level? Show me a similar streak by a player moving up.

Also, I have read that Chapman would be ranked right after Strasburg if both sign.

Chapman

can’t throw strikes, but watch publications fall into the age old caveat of falling in love with lanky young lefties who throw hard and have no idea where it’s going.

Assuming he's young

He could turn out to be 35.

Chapman

That would surprise me to see him that high on anyone’s list.

Just a guess, but the way this usually goes down is we find out his fastball isnt quite as hard as has been reported (or that he can dial it up that high, but sits 3-4mph slower) and that his secondary stuff isnt good. Ive seen a couple videos of him now… fastball looks great, other pitches look pretty run of the mill and he wasnt locating them in either. Still, lefty who throws that hard – lots to like.

I do usually love these Cuban pitchers who change speed and arm slots frequently… have to see what happens.

good point

But until then he is. I’d have it Strasburg, Heyward, Chapman. But I think Heyward isn’t that far behind Strasburg. Strasburg has a ton of question marks still.

close, but I generally take the hitter over the arm.

by slickterp on Aug 9, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

i'd take Heyward....

and with the money left over sign Baumgartner over Strasburg.

Heyward : 1.7 million signing bonus
Baumgartner : 2.0 million signing bonus

Strasburg is SEEKING: $50 million over 6 years.

No doubt the kid is good, but he’s not THAT good.

you are joking, right?

Flowers can hit the ball far, but where will he play? Will he hit over .220?

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Aug 10, 2009 7:22 AM EDT up reply actions

a little joking

but he will hit over .220 easily, all around hitting prospect

Come On

that kid has “bust” written all over him.

Pete Rose was actually banned from baseball for teaching Jeff Francoeur how to play. He made up the gambling stuff to hide his shame.

Chapman ?

or even Strasburg, but it isn’t a 100% consensus or fore-bound conclusion that Heyward will be #1 IMO

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Aug 10, 2009 3:05 AM EDT reply actions

Heyward has been my #1 for a long-time

He’s a six tool player if you consider plate discipline a tool, which I do. I was pretty puzzled how he fell down to #14 in the draft, and he’s confirmed what I thought about him.
