The "No longer prospects" thread
On here we talk about prospects from the time they are 18 until they reach the majors. Then after a month in the bigs, they become ancient history.
I think the Phil Hughes, Alex Gordons, and Clay Buchholz of the baseball world need there own thread. They may not be still technically considered prospects, but they are the future of baseball and that is what this site is about.
So instead of having a bunch of threads, I say we put it all in one and have a nice discussion about our one time favorite prospects. Are they on the right path? Will they be stars? Will they be bust?

Billy Butler
Everybody’s favorite Manny comparison. He has moved to first base. After a couple average seasons, he is quietly doing pretty damn good. On pace for 50 2B, 18 HR, and a .300 BA.
Only 23, I think he is on the path to living up to expectations.

re: butler
I wish I could actually see him play more, he’s been on fire recently and what he’s doing as a 23 year old is really promising for the future. He had been hitting a lot of doubles this season without the homers but now the homers are coming more frequently and he’s on pace for 20 or so. Is he still an Edgar Martinez clone? What’s his defense like at first base?
He’s always been one of my favorite prospects

Love this kid
I’m not sure if he made some adjustments at the start of July or what, but we may be looking at a breakout 2nd half here. Just glancing at the numbers, the big difference that jumps out at me is the BB/K numbers from July on. He’s posted a 14/19 BB/K ratio since then, and 45% of his hits have gone for extra bases in that span as well. Hopefully someone like doublestix or anyone who gets to see him on a regular basis can tell us if he’s doing anything differently.

i really don't know
all i know is he’s f’ing awesome. he goes to the opposite field gap as well as any young hitter i’ve seen recently. i’d bet near half his doubles have been to right center.
going to be a monster if some of those doubles start turning into home runs as he matures.

I would say pretty good odds
He is 6’2 240
He has a chance to hit 20 this year as a 23 year old.
As a 19 year old he hit 30 homers in the minors. (25 in A+ ball in only 92 games)
Now I am not sure he will ever hit 40 homers, but I see him hitting around 30 a year.

An injury unfortunetly shortened his season. He would have hit 30+ homers, but that would have probably hit under .250. He has all the potential in the world, but can he hit for average?

While I don’t think he’s going to hit .300 consistently, the guy has a BABIP of .202 this year, which is beyond ridiculously low. I can see him settling in as a .260-.270 hitter with 35-40 HR’s.

and I could see a year or two where luck is in his favor and he does post a .300 average, but I’m not sure he can do it consistently. As someone who owns Bruce in a fantasy league, I will say I’d love it if he did end up a .300 hitter with big power numbers.

Brett Anderson
Even through the rough patches, his peripherals supported better numbers. Brett has certainly impressed, being the A’s best pitcher since June. Only one start of his last 8 has he given up more than 4 runs, including two very excellent starts. (CG shutout in Fenway, 8 innings of perfect ball vs. Los Angeles) I knew he was going to be good, but he has really blown me away. Stud written all over him if he can stay healthy.

I believe this guy is a somewhat overlooked 5 tool player. He struggled last season in Oakland, but I think his trip back to AAA this season helped him out a lot. He destroyed the ball in AAA to start the year and it seems like that success may be be carrying over (hitting over .500 the last week).

let’s not get ahead of ourselves…
it IS Seattle (he’ll have to win games 2-0 and 3-2). I think a pitcher like, say, Hanson as a similarly realistic shot to be a HOF pitcher as King Felix, and that is “who the #$% knows” shot. ALOT has to go right for a guy to get tot he HOF and King Felix looks to be a bit snake bitten right now.

How is King Felix "snake bitten?"
He’s one of the best pitchers in the majors. I dont understand how people dont see this. He’s phenomenal, and of all pitchers under 25 years old he’s gotta be the most likely by far to be a HOFer.
He’s been one of the top 10 starting pitchers in baseball this year.
by alskor on Aug 9, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he's referring to Felix's last two starts.
And he’s wrong. Felix got 19 swinging strikes in his last start and had some incredibly terrible defense played behind him in the first two innings, getting his pitch count up.
Yes, the walks are troubling, but after the second inning, he controlled the Rays rather easily. His only real hiccup was the meatball he delivered to Pat Burrell.
The start before that he was wild, but not horrible. He’s fine.

mr AAAA eric patterson
I was willing to give this guy a free pass since he’s hit great in AAA, but every mlb chance he’s had has turned into being terrible. A’s attempted to give him a chance as the everyday cf when holliday got traded. And try him in a figgins type role. He’s not good defensively w/ a weak arm, hie has a long, uppercut swing. cant deny the great minor league trackrecord, but he’s just a flawed player.

I know all the Patterson people will say SSS for his major league stints
The problem is that he’s looked AWFUL. Like, not just “not ready” but “completely incapable of understanding how to play baseball.” He has literally shown no major league skills, outside of plus speed. What’s worse than the long swing is that he never seems to have any idea of what pitch is coming or where it’s going to end up.
I honestly have no idea how a guy who destroys AAA pitching could look so, so bad in the big leagues. Most 4A guys are bad major leaguers. Patterson is so bad you kinda feel sorry for him.

I'm hoping that Patterson can be the next version of Rajai Davis.
Rajai looked horrible in his first couple months this season. Very Patterson esque. He was being absolutely dominated in atbats, and was overmatched in every facet of the game.

could easily have described Rajai a few months ago. So while I don’t think Patterson will amount to anything, I’m hoping he has a Rajai like change in his game.

Disagree
I think Pearce is still the best option at first base. It’s a shame that he’s been screwed around by Neal because outside of 2008, he’s hit very well. There is no possible reason to start Brandon Moss instead of Steve Pearce.
I don’t think he’ll hit well enough to be anything more than an average first baseman, but there isn’t anyone in this organization (until Pedro officially moves to first) who is better.

I think so
I realize that Clement was pushed a little bit too hard by Seattle, but their minor league numbers are very similar. Clement has had the benefit of playing in hitter friendly leagues, and still has a worse minor league SLG. I do like Clement’s ability to get on base, but I really have doubts about his bat at first base.

Now that I think about it, a Pearce/Clement platoon may be the way to go.

I know they tried him in the OF at some point
but can Pearce actually play out there a couple of times a week? I don’t think Clement is an everyday catcher, but I do think he could catch a game or two a week to keep Doumit rested(and healthy ideally). So maybe if Pearce could play in the OF, they could essentially rotate three guys thru RF and 1B, with Clement getting 30-40 starts behind the plate. Is that possible at all any longer?
RIP Nick Adenhart

Defense
Pearce is pretty awful in the outfield. First base is really the only position that he can play with efficiency. I haven’t seen Clement catch, but I wouldn’t be against giving him time behind the plate. Doumit looks completely uninterested after the latest batch of trades, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s dealt in the off-season.

Ian Stewart and Chris Iannetta are acting very alike right now
The .229/.224 average will make you say bust, but his ISO numbers are mind wrecking, and his BABIP is abnormally low. Put their BABIP at .200 and they come out to be a .270 hitter, and that’s not even counting the power numbers they have.
Dexter Fowler
The strikeouts and passive approach annoy the heck out of me, but he’s hitting the ball more, leads a very patient Rockies team in walks, and showing the glove and speed, though UZR doesn’t think so.
Franklin Morales
He’s lost some velocity off his fastball, but he’s still a great power pitcher with plus stuff, has settled into a set-up role nicely, and is waiting for a spot in the rotation. Still has an upside of a #2 -#3 starter IMO.
Jason Hammel
A former Rays top prospect who’s fallen off the table has put together an average year. His K/9 is in career averages, but has shown extreme control with more H/9. Take away Coors numbers, and he looks like a solid #3, but in Coors, he’s terrible. If he learns to pitch in Coors, he’s probably going to become a solid starter and not a bust.

Ian Stewart
Stewart is absolutely a player who is no longer a prospect but who is playing at the major league level while still making significant improvements to his game.
Unlike many strike out prone power hitters who have significant limitations in terms of thier ability to make contact Stewart has quick wrists and good bat speed. The chances of him making contact more often as he matures are very good.

Elvis Andrus and Derek Holland
figured id post a couple Rangers.
Elvis’ defense has been better than advertised imo. I think he was 2nd in UZR among SS last time I checked, thats awesome for a 20 yr old who still is somewhat injury prone. His hitting isnt great, but a .326 OB% is very solid and his plate discipline has been a good suprise. I expect him to develop some decent power as he’s got a sold enough frame, maybe 15 or so HR power, making him closer to a .750 OPS super defensive SS… his Renteria comparisons seem very valid and I think inserting him into the Ranger’s D has been one of the biggest reasons the run prevention has gone from worst to almost best in the AL. That cant be underrated.
Holland: Well, after pitching two of the best pitched games i’ve ever seen in his last three starts, Holland has put alot of faith in the Ranger’s faithful that he is the ace of the future. Im excited about seeing him and Anderson face off for years to come. Holland has certaintly been inconsistent and has gone through the growing pains, but its so very obvious that he’s going to be really good if he stays healthy, his stuff is electric. His secondary offerings are very, very good, he just has to continue to get ahead in the count with well located FBs. Holland, despite a 5.00 ERA on the season, has very promising peripheral numbers, the best K/BB ratio of the starters in texas, solid GB/FB ratios, the only thing is a high HR/FB rate and that is gonna go down with time as he continues to figure out how to pitch.
If I had to regrade both of them Id probably give them both A- with Holland’s grade approaching a solid A

“Well, after pitching two of the best pitched games i’ve ever seen in his last three starts”
Wow, they were amazing starts, but best pitched games ever? C’mon

He probably meant for a rangers pitcher
which in this case other than Kenny Rodgers a few times, Nolan Ryan and Kevin Brown that’s probably true.

Carlos Gomez
Does anyone think that his power will ever develop? He has days where he looks like the best player in the majors and the next night he looks like a confused high schooler. I think he will be an impact player if he ever learns patience. Maybe around 26 or 27, after he leaves the Twins.

original thread
Regarding the original premise of the thread, during the offseason we did a community ranking of the best prospects among those who had used up their rookie eligibility the year before. I’m certainly planning on doing that again this year, and I think it is going to be a very interesting group to discuss and rank, not that it shouldn’t be discussed in this thread too, of course.

Chris Young (OF)
Sent down to the minors today. He looked like a future 40/40 guy a couple years ago. Can he get back on track, or will he be doomed by a low BA and high strikeouts?

Jeremy Sowers
Finally starting full time and won’t be sent down since the Tribe doesn’t have much in the ways of pitching.
4 of his last 6 starts have been very encouraging – can he finally put it together, or is he really a finesse pitcher with little control?

2 more A's
Gio – He’s been throwing strikes lately, and has been very effective. Let’s see if it lasts.
Sweeney – Good glove, no power. He’s only 24 so he still has a little time, but unless he shows either more power or a phenomenal ability to get on base (either of which would have to come out of nowhere), I think he’s a 4th OF.

eric patterson
I hate to repeat myself, but this guy is just a waste of talent. You see decent major league quality players with less able to do more. the patterson brothers have to be one the biggest brother bust duos in recent yrs.
He looks totally overmatched and no clue what to do in his major callups, but continues to destroy AAA

What are you talking about?
12 games and he’s a “waste of talent?” Give the guy a real chance in the majors. Babe Ruth had some pretty awful 12 game stretches.

Andrew McCutchen
People were mentioning him as a speedy, above-average leadoff type not long ago.
I know it’s a relatively small MLB sample size, but he looks like a potential star to me.

+1
And has shown power than I thought he would though it is a small sample size.
