Black “Rob Deer”!! hahahah I still cannot get over that one!

The Black Deer could actually be a decent nickname

Although going by his given first name of Vernon would be pretty badass.

The Black Deer

Is now what I will call this man. Although ‘Vernon’ is certainly badass, and ‘deer’ probably does not suit Carter’s running speed…I cannot pass up on this name, good work PTBNL!!!

So, getting me to think about the Black Deer, I’ll throw out some guys who may be MLB past/present similar numbers and let me know (Not restricted by position, just hitting comp):

Albert Belle (minus a bit of AVG)
Mike Schmidt
Tim Salmon
Dale Murphy
Rob Deer!!! (just kidding)

I’m sure I missed on a few, but in terms of final end of hitting numbers, any of these guys stats sound similar to The Black Deer’s MLB projections?? Am I too optimistic??

by ChalupaCabrera on Aug 7, 2009 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Assuming

I am projecting The Black Deer to be in the vicinity of:

BA: .270-.285
SLG: .530-.560
OBP: .340-.355
OPS: .870-.915

Comps

Guys with a ~.225+ IsoP
Guys with a ~12-14% BB rate
Guys with a ~20-25% K rate

Luke Scott
Brad Hawpe
Derek Lee
Jason Bay
Prince Fielder
Adrian Gonzalez

+1

Derrek Lee 2002-2004 could be a very nice comp.

Physically

Both big, athletic guys that also have enough speed to steal 10-15 bases. I like that comp (minus the defense, probably)

he seems to me to be a player who would be very hard to predict going forward

as good as his statistics are right now, for some reason i cannot see huge MLB success. What does anybody else think about Mr. Carter?

What is your definition of "huge MLB success"?

No one is predicting that Carter will be Barry Bonds, but I don’t think him being Jim Thome is out of the realm of possibility. I’d consider that to be “huge MLB success”. I definitely don’t expect him to end up being Rob Deer.

I'd consider that being huge

Jim Thome is a stud, 500+ HRs, but I don’t know. That could be an applicable ceiling.

It's ridiculous what he's doing now

Even if he cant play (or is pushed off of due to org. depth) first, his bat looks like it’d be immesnely valuable just as a DH.

I was at this game tonight and due to alot of pretty girls in the stands (don’t worry I’m a college guy) didn’t pay as much attention as I should have, but Montgomery looked damn good. First 4 innings guy flat out dominated. Hitting 95 and was sitting 91-92 pretty late into the game. Very impressive.

Listened to some of this game

The douchey announcers only said velocity like twice for May and it was 92 and 93. Clearly he was having trouble with his command and several of the singles were infield/seeing eye types.

Hagadone sounded pretty good and it sounded like he was throwing just as hard as May (from the left side).

Listened to a tad of this game

Moore was 90-91ish and touched 95 at one point. He threw his curve for a strike a lot (more than I thought he would) and that’s why he was able to K so many.

Ryan Kalish

2-4, HR (7). After a brutal first two months in AA, he put up an .863 OPS in July, and he’s at 1.244 so far in August. Obviously he won’t continue that well, but if he finishes the season strong he’s back in the 50-75 range for me.

Hosmer 1/4 – 3B, RBI, R

Moustakas 0/3 – K

Moose played and carried himself horribly tonight. K’d and just threw his bat and helmet across the field. Hit a sharper ground up the 1B line and didn’t even take a step out of the batters box, I guess he thought it was foul, but ump called it fair and punched him out while was still standing at home plate.

1 for 4 for Hosmer doesn’t sound overly impressive and perhaps his one hit just really stood out to me, but I came away liking what I saw with the guy. Very nice BP session, sharp liners to the opposite field, no HR’s, but some hard shots off the wall to all fields. His one hit was an absolute rocket to dead CF, I thought for sure it was gone, but hit the bottom of the double wall in Potomac. hustled his butt off and went headfirst into third for the triple. also went headfirst into first in his last at bat trying to beat one out.

by SouthAtlanticLeagueFan on Aug 7, 2009 1:09 AM EDT reply actions

headfirst into first

I am once again perplexed why anyone with any sense would slide headfirst into first base other than to avoid a tag derived from an errant throw. When this game we call baseball was being developed 150 years ago or so, the reason they allowed runners to continue to run through first base without penalty is so that a runner did not have to slide to control a stop at first. I know you’re trying to show Hosmer hustled on that play, but for me, I shake my head, since running through the bag is faster and the rule allows that.
