2 Random Yankee Questions

I have 2 questions I was hoping some of you could answer...

Star-divide

1) Do you see Kevin Russo, Eduardo Nunez, or Reegie Corona as decent prospects or do they only look to be back-ups?

2)  If you are the Yankees, who goes into your 2010 rotation: Alfredo Aceves or Phil Hughes?  With CC-AJ-Joba and likely Pettitte re-signing, there will probably be only one spot.

As a Sox fan, I’d much rather see Aceves fill out the rotation – Phil Hughes has pitched some mean innings out of the bullpen and has shown he can handle big league hitters very well – I don’t want to face him as a starter, for sure.
Hughes should fill out the rotation next year without a question.

I hope they don’t put Hughes in the rotation….or CC or Joba. AJ will choke and Pets-it is 80, so they can stay.

Lackey

I have a feeling the Yankees will make a strong attempt at signing FA John Lackey.

1. Corona and Russo are just fillers. Nunez is only 20 so, there’s still hope for him.
2. Hughes will be in the rotation next year and Aceves will be in the pen as a long reliever/spot starter. There was never any plan to put him in the rotation.

As far as the payroll comment goes, I forgot the Red Sox were a small market team. Lord help those poor, beard wearing, blue collar guys who play for peanuts in Beantown.

I read and then re-read his comment and I can’t see anything about the Red Sox. All I noticed was someone pointing out that the Yankees spend dough, that’s nearly irrefutable. Why so touchy?

As a percentage, no other division has a big a divide between the highest payroll and 2nd highest payroll.

As a percentage.

Think about that.

Backups

As a Yankee Fan, I hate Nunez and Corona. I really think they are overrated (even though Nunez just tied the game on a HR =]). Nunez is a backup. Corona is definitely utility. Russo has had some nice offense in AAA. Maybe slightly better than Jerry Hairston Jr. who is a B level free agent.

I can’t answer number 2. I would love to see Ian Kennedy pull it together but between those two Hughes by a lot. Aceves has been awful. Don’t look at W-L record. ERA is falling apart. He just got it back under 4 the other night. I don’t think it would be better in the rotation. Hughes is much better

Compared to the rest of our bullpen

simply yes. Coke exploded in just one game. His ERA would be around here. Take out two games and his ERA would be 3. Marte was a mistake by our awful GM and Gaudin will be DFAd before the playoffs. Lots of AAA guys could take his spot like Kroenke and Melancon and Dunn and maybe Dejo and Edwar if they are back to normal.

And don’t even mention Bruney. He was injured and came back when he was still injured.

This is just dumb.

Okay, take out Coke’s two worst games and his ERA would be 3?

Take out Aceves’ two worst games his his ERA would be 2.95.

There’s a reason you don’t take out everybody’s two worst games. Aceves has had a fantastic last two years, and his K/BB and K/9 this season have been great. I agree that Hughes is a better option for the rotation, but I think you’re drastically underrating Aceves.

Take out Aceves two worst games?

Do you watch him pitch? His ERA would still be about the same. He usually gives up like 2 runs every other time he pitches 2 innings or so.

Coke rarely gives up runs. He gave up 6 in .1 inning and 4 in .2. He also gave up 3 in 1 but I am not even counting that.

Coke is doing fine. He blew up 3 times all year otherwise he has been awesome. And at least 2 of those games were blowouts.

I didn't know about the shoulder sourness

but he still gave up 16 earned runs in his last 10 appearances.

Sorry to change the subject, but I just saw his road ERA looking at his splits and saw his road ERA which surprised me. 6.91. I would have thought NYS ERA was awful, but not so with him.

Ace has been great

he comes in and keeps us in games for 3 or 4 innings you need a guy like that.

by yankeechaser on Sep 3, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hmm

1. they’re all backups to different extends, Russo might be able to do something with the bat that would make him more Mark Loretta like but he’s the worest defensively of the 3. Nunez have the glove and decent hitting ability but he makes Cano looks like the king of walks, Corona can’t seem to even hit at AAA. though he’s done alright at AA.

Verdict : they’re nice pieces to have around and one of them might end up being a nice solid utility guys. but not much else. still , it beats having to pay millions of dollars to Miguel Cairo or even worse. Tony Womack.

2. Hughes definately , upside trumps pitchability. they’ll probably split some itme next year though anywya. Hughes will need multiple seasons to build up innnings again after this year.

Defense

No way Russo is the worst defensively. Nunez has 30 errors and counting on the season. Russo has versatility playing 5 maybe 6 positions. Corona plays both MI position (2B and SS) while 3B might be difficult. I wouldn’t fiddle with Nunez’s position. Maybe 2B or 3B. Big Maybe.

Russo walks a lot too to accompany his low strikeout total and high average. Has some speed even he doesn’t steal bases well. Little power. Nice amount for a 2B though.

Russo only has 12 errors in the last two years despite playing various positions. His fielding has progressed and remember the mlb doesn’t give errors when they might be deserved.

Russo defensively>Corona defensively>Nunez defensively

errors

are a poor judgement method to a guy’s fielding ability, espicalyl in the minors.

all it reflect is that Russo probably have more steady hands and doesn’t try to overextend himself too often. the very fact that he’s the only one of the 3 that havn’t played any SS reflects well what the yankees think of him defensively from a tools point of view.

Of course. having great defensive tools doesn’t equate to having great defense (see Yuniesky Betancourt) but you can’t really judge that until they get up to the majros with some deal of consistency.
