september call ups....

alright guys... september is upon us tomorrow. who do you guys predict will get called up pre-playoffs? I think the Giants call up Buster Posey, possibly having Molina as DH. I know theres a lot of non Austin Jackson fans, but i could see A-Jax getting the call up. Anyone else you guys think will see the show? Justin Smoak? Pedro Alvarez? i know the pirates are way out of contention, but maybe as a way to show fans the future.

I don't mean to slightly shift focus, but I have a question regarding call-ups, too.

And I’m not sure it’s worth its own thread.

Basically, do players accrue service time in September? I’ve heard people say that call-ups do not. So how does this work? Is it as simple as “everybody called up on Sept. 1 or later doesn’t count”? What about rookies or other players who are optioned back and forth multiple times during a season, but come up in September? What about a rookie called up on August 20. Do his September days count?

by thejd44 on Aug 31, 2009 2:46 AM EDT reply actions

I believe so — however, days in September do not count towards rookie/prospect eligibility (capped at 45 days). Doesn’t make a difference as far as arbitration, because the extra month won’t make up the difference between two and three season, nor is it enough to get players into super-2 status. Also, players added to the 40-man roster in September don’t lose an option year.

by T Pac on Aug 31, 2009 4:30 AM EDT up reply actions

they WILL lose an option, however, if they are optioned back down to a MiL club following spring training the next season

They've already said Posey is not coming up unless Molina gets seriously injured

and it would be kind of hard to DH Molina, unless the Giants are moving to the AL west.

Molina to DH?

Come on, OP. That’s a ridiculous mistake.

Brignac

Doesn’t sound like Reid is getting promoted, at least for now; possibly when Durham’s season ends

by FI2 on Aug 31, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

re Brignac

Is he more of a defensive guy? I’ve always heard that he’s going to be good offensively, but I just don’t see it. I’ve never seen him play (except for a few MLB games when he was called up and struggled), so I’m only basing this on numbers. What kind of numbers can he put up at the MLB level?

by rmarx on Aug 31, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

He's...

a good glove, potentially good bat guy. His offense hasn’t lived up to expectations, but he’s been great in the past and shown flashes of plus offensive ability.

Even so, with his defense, if Brignac OPS’s .700 in the majors, he’s a very good player. If he can push that up towards .800 he’s a borderline star.

by slamcactus on Aug 31, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I would say he is more of a defensive guy but his bat still has some good upside

he has been rated by some the best defensive IF in the Rays system the last 2 years and the best defensive SS in the IL over the same period.

by Dbullsfan on Aug 31, 2009 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I compared him to Jeff Blauser two years ago

Thought his bat was overrated and right now I look right, good glove though.

Smoak

re

as a Dbacks fan the only prospects I cared to see up were Brandon Allen, who is now starting at 1b, and Jarrod Parker, who isn’t on the 40 man and probably won’t see MLB action until next year. The only other guy on our 40 man that strikes me as the least interesting is SS Pedro Ciriaco.

September (boring/no) callups?

Is it me, or is the selection of guys that SHOULD come up relatively low compared to other years, especially in the hype department?

Smoak? (I wish!…) probably not.
Posey? (I wish!…) probably not.
Hellickson? Davis? (maybe? maybe not?)

Heyward? hope so. (doubt it though)
A.Jackson – no need for the Yanks to bring him up, so doubt it.

Parker, MadBum, Alderson, Stanton, DJennings, Strasburg/etc – a whole bunch of “no” but a maybe in Stanton?

Last year, and years past there were at least that ONE big name, or one uberprospect that should get the cup of tea; but unfortunately I don’t feel or smell that on the horizon.

Who do you guys think will be the big top-25’er that’ll make it ?

oakland has said that they will not call up wallace.

i think the sept. callups as a time to see huge prospects is past. contending teams, absent major injuries, would have called up their prospects by now, if they needed them. non-contending teams are going to keep them down to save the roster spots and to keep the prospect down until May or so to prevent Super-Two-dom. seems like people use the expansion to get a little bullpen relief, some pinchhitters, an extra loogy, a third catcher, etc.

sept callups seem much more for filling in the gaps with role players than for trying out hot prospects.

A's won't call up Wallace for several reasons

1) Sac is in the playoffs
2) He is not ready defensively yet
3) He’s not on the 40 man roster, so no need to add him till you are sure he will stick

Tampa has announced their first wave of call-ups

no Joyce, Brignac, Davis, Hellickson, or Jennings (the last 2 werent expected but the first 3 were) I guess they are pushing hard for that Governers Cup this year.

by Dbullsfan on Aug 31, 2009 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

They always leave their kids down for the playoffs.

They did it last year so it’s not really a surprise.

speaking of Jennings

anyone know what happened to him? I assume some minor injury has kept him out of the lineup the last few days.

Tyler Flowers

Maybe he can play some DH, though I don’t see him cutting into Pierz’s time too much…

Nice secondary skills

on Brantley, apart from power. Walks a lot, easy plus contact and speed—it seems like his BABIP is very low this year considering his wheels and line-drive bat. Does anyone have an idea what his defense is like? How many doubles does he have to hit to play LF for the Indians next year?

by PissedMick on Sep 3, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

From what I've heard, his defense isn't great

Apparently he’s somewhat lacking in outfield fundamentals like route-running.

interesting topic

I’m surprised there aren’t more posts and recs.

by rmarx on Sep 1, 2009 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

and to answer your question...

I have no idea who’s going to be called up any more. I have been holding the #1 waiver priority in my dynasty league since Day 1 waiting for somebody great, but I don’t think either of the 2 I want will happen:

Strasburg: No chance
Heyward: Doubtful

Even Smoak would be nice, but I don’t see that either. Actually, I really need a CI, so Smoak would be great. Garrett Atkins isn’t cutting it for me any more!

by rmarx on Sep 1, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn't sure either

But I had a move available and grabbed Tyler Flowers in my dynasty league.

by fuzzy14eva on Sep 1, 2009 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Posey

I’ll use my #1 waiver priority on Buster I guess, even though I have Wieters. I don’t think Heyward will be up this year :-(. I was also saving my priority all year for Strasburg or Heyward.
