Black Deer
First of all, it’s racist.
Second of all, and more imporantly, he’s absolutely nothing like Rob Deer
No offense...
… but why the FUCK would that be racist?
You are either saying that I am racist- because racism is what is in that HEART of a person-
or that the nickname is inherintly racist- I guess i could see that
but would calling Josh Hamilton the “White Ranger” be racist. I guess i don’t exactly see why it is racist especially because it is done with love for the guy- Carter I mean. I agree that he a much better hitting talent than Rob Deer though interestingly enough there were/are some similarities
- Plus power or close, very good power lets say
- Lots of K’s
- The main one is that both were deceptively good athletes- much better than they are/were given credit for
Id say Carter is going to be a better hitter and Deer was a beter athlete- but Carter could turn out to be a decent LF I guess.
Anyways, I like the nickname but I’m willing to drop it too many people think its racist. Thoughts anybody? Intelligent ones?
the "black" part
You are keying in on his race to differentiate him.
It would be like calling Youkilis “Jew third baseman”.
And the “racist” thing is really secondary. That’s not why you should drop it. The reason you should drop it is because it’s retarded. He’s absolutely nothing like Rob Deer. He’s got way more power than Deer, he strikes out less and walks more.
It’s just an idiotic name because it has no basis in comparison. He’s no more like Rob Deer as he is like Pete Incaviglia or Steve Balboni. But of course, their names aren’t fancy animal names. Why not call him the Black Foxx because he’s so much like Jimmy Foxx? Or the Coon Boone?
Since both players have about as much to do with Chris Carter as Rob Deer. But at least they create wacky naming schemes.
Wow
So my original long response, one that undoubtedly would’ve gotten me banned, encouraged you to dive headfirst into a fully functional wood chipper.
While that particular intention of mine is still pretty much there, seriously man, that is NOT racism. That’s not even close to racism. REFERRING to race as an identifier is…simply identifying somebody by a physical characteristic. “Coon” and “Black” aren’t even remotely on the same level, and if you think they are, you are past the point of stupid. Way past.
And calling Youkilis a “Jew third baseman,” to me at least, has an implied stress on “Jew” that is meant to be disparaging. But simply saying “Youkilis is a Jew third baseman” isn’t racist. It’s true (except when he’s playing first).
Your other point, fine. Except I think a lot of people here are calling him “The Black Deer” in a some sort of ironic way precisely because he’s not like Rob Deer. Maybe I’m wrong there.

You're taking it way too personally
The fact that you are explicitly using his race and his race alone to differentiate him is implicitly racist.
Why not call him “Tall Deer”, since he’s taller than Rob Deer? Or “Vegas Deer” since Chris Carter was born in Vegas and Rob Deer was born in California? or “Awkward Deer” since he’s a bad fielder? There are an infinite ways you can differentiate Chris Carter. You choose his race That’s what’s implicitly racist.
But that’s like 1% of my argument.
It just makes absolutely no sense to compare him to Rob Deer.
PC Police Strikes Again
Of course you realize that by implication, being called black is an insult to you which to me is pretty insulting.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

he never said being called black was an insult
He said being identified primarily by your race is an insult.
Incredible
It’s all just a running joke — why anybody would actually be offended is beyond me.
Simply amazing.

3 things
1) I agree that it is an awful nickname
2) I doubt he has “way more” power than Rob Deer. Deer had a mess of power.
3) Calling a black person black as a means of identification is not racist, in any meaningful sense of the word. However, you could make the case that it is rather gauche.
Can't
everyone STFU and talk baseball? Jump over to CNN and talk race…….this is a baseball site!
he didn't mention race
he said it was a terrible nickname.
"way more power than Deer"?
Wow. I love when people say shit like this. He hasn’t even played a single major league game and he has way more power than a guy that hit 33 homers in 134 games and 32 in 110 games? Over Deer’s career he averaged 32 homers per 162 games.
Rob Deer
I believe I was the one who initially came up with the comparison of Deer for Carter last season. I based this comparison at the time (2008) on:
1. Huge power
2. Huge K’s
3. Almost identical walk rate
That said, I hope the nickname sticks because while the comparison may be way off now, it is still a kick ass nickname.

Yeah
It’s an awesome name, and if anything shows how much he has improved and exceeded expectations. It’s just a joke.
I mean holy crap, how sensitive can you get?
"Chicks dig the long ball, although fat chicks will settle for warning track power" - Nick Diamond
Not that it needs mentioned again and I see where you are coming from agreeing you shouldn’t describe people based primarily on their race but I don’t think I’d label it as racist necessarily. Definitely insensitive and rude, gauche was a good description, but I don’t think I’d say it is racist or anyone who uses it is racist necessarily.
saw Mejia tonight
Got in Mejia’s short outing tonight. Sat in the mid 90’s touching 98 MPH. Even hit a 97 pitching out of the stretch, which he was 90% of the night. Pitch a good 1st inning and K’d a guy with a good curveball. Had an okay 2nd but fell apart for the rest of the game. He completely lost confidence in his changeup and curveball and threw a couple of crappy ones in the 3rd inning that were high and out of the zone. His command of his fastball disappeared and threw fastballs high out of the zone and lost his composure a few times out there. He may have opened up his deliverly too early, maybe from the time off. He threw nothing but fastball once there was two runners on in the 3rd until the end of his start. Maybe I see why they compare him to Edwin Jackson, tonight this was the Rays version on Jackson, not the Tigers version. He needs another year in AA to get his secondary stuff together.
Just want to mention...
he’s only had 4ks in his last 39 PAs. And he’s at 23% in AA, which isn’t too bad.

another nice outing, but short: 3 innings, 1 run, 5 Ks, 1 BB. why just 3 innings? injury? limiting innings at the end of the season?
Grant Desme - Cal league superstar
His injury history is substantial and he’s got some steps to take before being considered a top prospect but man has he taken to the California league this year.
With 2HR in his first 2 AB’s tonight he now has 20 HR in 60 games played at A+ to go along with 16 SB’s from a CF with an above average arm. His biggest problem is his K-rate but it has been steadily going down and now sits at 28% to go with a 12% BB rate. 28% K rate is still a bit concerning but considering it was around 35% a month ago it’s nice to see him moving in the right direction.
Definitely a guy who should be fun to watch in the AFL.
It is going to be insteresting to see what he does in midland next season. Hopefully enough to earn a trip to sacramento mid-year.
