I knew about Bell...

…I’m a bit surprised to see Erbe going, after the arm trouble he’s had.

Any idea who the rest of the O’s will be?

Not announced yet

But I’m surprised that they’re sending Snyder for a third straight season.

No Logan Morrison?

I thought for certain he would be going after missing some development time with the wrist injury.

he was in the AFL last year

not sure on the rules on how many times you can participate, but perhaps thats the reasoning why he isnt there

So is Desme and Brown.

"Carter's 25-game hitting streak isn't any normal streak. He's 46 for 97 (.474 average) during the run, adding 16 walks and compiling 81 total bases in the process. I'm out of superlatives for what he's doing." - Kevin Goldstein

Norris

Can’t wait to see this guy against some higher level competition. Any word on how his defense is progressing?

by ChalupaCabrera on Aug 25, 2009 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

He's throwing out a fair number of runners.

But people run wild in the Sally League. He’s thrown out 50 of 136 attempted basestealers (37%). That’s just tons of throwing, 1.5 attempted steals per game. He still has tons of passed balls and errors, but he’s improving his rates year-to-year.

For the update Andy! Much appreciated sir.

Dustin Ackley is listed as an IFer. I'm not sure what that means.

Is he still not fully recovered from TJ or are they trying to make him a 2B?

Age

Cubans don’t have any incentive to lie about their age.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 28, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

That's nonsense

They have every reason to lie about their age. In fact, they have more incentive than any other Latin players, as it’s much easier for them to get away with it.

by Fanon on Aug 28, 2009 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

re:

Cuban baseball is built around international play. I’ll quote JJ Cooper (this is regarding Chapman, but it should still apply to Viciedo):

“A quick Google Search of “Aroldis Chapman actually 26” shows that the Times report has quickly become the accepted standard, raising significant questions about Chapman’s age. But in addition to not have any real documentation behind it, the report also doesn’t pass the logic test. Why would Cuba lie about a player’s age? Cuba doesn’t want to see its players defect. Lying about Chapman’s age to make him seem younger could have a minor benefit in giving Cuba a better chance win the occasional age-group international tournament (although Chapman has been playing on the senior national team), but it would also raise the likelihood that Chapman would defect for riches in the U.S. If the Cuban government had incentive to mislead, it would want to make its players appear to be older than they are–a 35-year-old pitcher isn’t as likely to land a multimillion dollar deal in the U.S. as a 25-year-old."

by Jeff Reese on Aug 29, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Fair Enough

I worded it poorly; the objection that you have is merely a semantic one though. Cuban baseball is structured in a way that makes faking your birth records much tougher than in other Latin islands.

IF Adam Loewen, TOR

That’s interesting. That’s the former Orioles pitcher, right?

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

Checking the numbers, he's actually had a so-so year as a hitter this year

.246/.349/.372/.721 – 48/108 BB/K

Granted, very little power, but great control of the strike zone for a guy who hasn’t hit since high school, and it’s the FSL. He could actually be something.

adam loewen

me and my buddy went to Florida for 2 weeks nearly 2 years ago. We stayed at my buddies uncles little apartment in his shop. Turns out that was where Adam Loewen stayed during spring training. Had a bunch of his stuff in the apartment. I also went through some of his mail… i didn’t open it though…

Freddie Freeman

May end up being a scratch from the AFL. He’s currently on the DL with a hand injury so we’ll just have to watch and see how it plays out.

When do guys report?

I see Milb says Heyward is with Peoria and he hasn’t played the last couple games, do players report soon or something?

by MightyMoose on Aug 26, 2009 12:36 PM EDT reply actions

Settle down there

The league doesn’t start until Oct. 12th. Many players probably won’t report until after the MLB regular season ends on Oct. 4th, since they will likely be called up to the big league club when rosters expand on Sept. 1.

Kalish

Ryan Kalish is on the Mesa Solar Sox. He is currently putting up a .962 OPS in August after a .863 OPS in July. He has shown much better plate discipline and much improved his power. I can see him as a 20/20 player in the majors. He probably projects as a RF down the line but he has definitely broke out these past few months after his rough transition to AA

Ike Davis

It’ll be nice to see him out hit guys like Alonso and finally get some respect.
