August 20 and 21 minor league thread

Thought Id do this kinda in reverse, just for fun- look at the most intriging pitching matchups, THEN see what happened tonight- and might as well list tomorrows matchups as well since these things have been slowing down lately with all the draft signing talk going on.

AAA- Jeremy Hellickson K'd 10 in 5 innings in Durhams 10-2 win. now 4-1 3.31 (Corrected) at AAA

AA - Was supposed to be an intriging Guerra vs Holt matchup but Brad Holt didn't start for whatever reason.Guerra pitched well 6.2 5 2 1 0 6 - Madison Bumgarner 5 4 2 1 3 5, now 8-1 2.05 in AA, really struggling lol - Kyle Drabek was brilliant 7-3-0-0-1-4

A- Carlos Zambrano went 5 shutout innings for Peoria on the rehab train

Not today but, yesterday Brett Wallace had a HUGE game, 2 Bombs, Double, 5 RbI

Pitching on Friday, at least scheduled to: AAA- Bowden, Carrasco, Hayden Penn, AA- Inman, A- Clayton Tanner, Mike Montgomery, Jay Jackson (2-0, 0.36), Randall Delgado, Jason Knapp

Hellickson

Hellickson’s ERA is in no way reflective of the way he’s pitched in AAA. His FIP is 3.26, K/9 is 9.66, K/BB over 3/1,. his hit rate is good and he’s just down right making people look silly. Last night he had 16 swinging strike out of 92 pitches. That’s fantastic.

Wrong ERA

A big reason why his ERa is in no way reflective of the post is because it is 3.31 since his move to AAA This guy is for real and I hope he gets a shot at the Rays rotation next year

I don't really understand the people

who write off Hellickson’s dominance at every level of the minors, due to pitchability and command.

IMO, Hellickson is making a serious bid at top 25 status.

In addition to his elite poise and command, this guy throws 91-93 on his fastball (touching 95), has arguably a plus curveball, and a serviceable changeup.

With smooth mechanics to boot, there’s really nothing lacking in Jeremy’s profile.

I've been high on Hellickson as well for 3 years

I think he could be a lot better than Kyle Drabek.

MY bad

I appologize for entwering his ERA wrong. I agree that he has been pretty dang good- everywhere he has pitched actually.

What about

Hellickson vs. Moore?

Who will be better for the Rays?

And what about Nick Barnese?

100 years would have been nice, but 101 years still has a nice ring to it.

by airweino on Aug 21, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hard to say.

Moore has the higher ceiling. Better fastball and breaking ball, but is in low-A and has command problems. Hellickson is dominating at a high level currently and just about big league level.

Nick Barnese isn’t close to either of them. He’s got a sinker and that’s about it at this point.

agreed

Barnese is a good distance behind.

Moore does indeed have a tremendous ceiling. Deadly 1-2 fastball/curveball combo.

Hellickson is behind Moore IMO. Good fastball and control, but limited ceiling.

I haven't gotten a good look at Moore's

curveball, but he has really bad mechanics.

He’ll probably be a reliever down the line.

yeah

not next-door, but it’s an 8 minute walk to his house, which is pretty close. i played on his little league and pony team for 2 years and my brother player with his older brother and my parents are friends with his dad, he was always a couple years older than me but it’s still pretty cool i think

I like to think so

He’s always been super nice to me. Obviously, like everybody, has a few people who don’t like him, but he’s pretty well liked.

not really

3.72 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 10 K in 9.2 IP

I do agree that the walks are high (5).

Let’s keep in mind that he was out for a looong time. He’s just getting back into the groove of things.
