8/2/09 MiLB thread

Kinda surprised nobody posted this with the high amounts of pitching going on today:

AAA – Hector Rondon, Brad Lincoln vs. Wade Davis (pretty strong matchup), Gustavo Chacin vs. Philip Humber (I used to absolutely love chacin),  Junichi Tazawa, Charlie Haegar

AA – Jeanmar Gomez vs. Bradley Holt (another strong matchup), Radhames Liz, Jeremy Papelbon, Kasey Kiker (does he stick at starter or reliever, he's having a great season in my mind), Lance Lynn,

A+ – Mark Rogers, Kyle Nicholson

A – Andrew Carraway, Aaron Miller, Joseph Serafin, Ross Seaton, Manuel Banuelos

Nobody Beats the Viz

He’s 18, so I imagine he’ll stay in SI for the rest of the season. I would be curious to see what he could do at a higher level, but we’ll probably have to wait until next season to see him in full-season ball.

Looks like the best pitcher in SS ball right now...

As alskor points out, those numbers are definitely promotion worthy. Although when you consider he should have just finished his high school career, I guess there’s no need rush. Looking forward to seeing him next year in full-season ball. At this point, you’d have to say he’s #3 ranked prospect in the Yankees system behind Jesus and Austin.

All other numbers aside

When a guy is dominating that much by allowing that few hits… he’s probably ready for another challenge.

Brad Holt

I have to say, whenever I see him in a box score I think of the Steve Holt character from Arrested Development.

“Brad Holt!”

Anyways, 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 6 BB(!), 2 K. 4 GO – 11 FO.

my only concern

His strike zone judgement. I mean, a 15:9 BB:K at AA for a 19 year old? Is that the best he can do?

Oh, and power, too. Only what, 17 XBH in 84 AB’s?

Not minors

but wtf is wrong with Alex Gordon. The one time #1 prospect in baseball doesn’t even look like he belongs in the majors lately.

by nyy601 on Aug 3, 2009 1:52 AM EDT reply actions

Well, he's coming back off an injury

so Im still inclined to cut him some slack… but then, Im a bit of a fanboy to begin with.

He’s actually showing good patience (7 BB-8 K) since his return, but he doesnt have an XBH yet.

by alskor on Aug 3, 2009 2:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I can tell you whats wrong with Delmon, Lack of Playing Time and Can’t seem to settle into an everyday stance….
too many changes and tweaks here or there is resulting in 0 production….
people forget that he actually ended up having a decent 2008…. but he’s been worse in ’09

I’m still in the group that says theres no way 2007 was his ‘career’ year.

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Aug 3, 2009 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Young was always more of a "toolsy" guy with some holes

I always had the impression that Gordon was a polished guy, had a nice swing, kept a good approach, and was a quality defender. Didn’t think he’d have major troubles adjusting. At least, I was more confident in him than Young, who was more of a “tools will play, trust the tools” guy.

I don’t have a strong feeling one way or the other, but should we take guys like these (and Andy Marte, etc.) as cautionary tales when talking about guys like Jason Heyward?

by mraver on Aug 3, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Heyward

The thing I like about Heyward is, I have always read he has great makeup, has always been kept grounded by his parents, and is pretty intelligent. I’m not sure if these are signs that he will be able to maintain this success in the majors, but when I read something like this where the kid has a strong backing and foundation coming in, it makes me feel more confident he will succeed.

Just some notes...

ATL AA Heyward, Jason RF 3 1 1 2 .417
- Sept callup?

BOS MAJ Reddick, Josh LF 6 2 2 2 .364 HR (1)
- 872 in AAA International League as a 22 year old, with potential 20HR power and above avg defense. Underrated as a Sox prospect…I think it’s possible. Trot Nixon Part II?

BOS SS Gibson, Derrik 2B 5 1 4 2 .276 2B (11)
- thought he was a SS? I’ve seen him playing 2b almost exclusivity. Looks exciting though.

CHC MAJ Fox, Jake 3B 4 1 1 1 .308 HR (8)
- hasn’t stopped…

CWS MAJ Beckham, Gordon 3B 5 2 3 1 .311 2 2B (17)
- Think how good that bat plays at 2b/ss. When do the CWS restore that value?

CWS MAJ Getz, Chris 2B 4 0 1 0 .271 3B (4)
- .872 since AS Break

LAA R Grichuk, Randal LF 5 2 1 1 .324 3B (7), SB (5);
LAA R Trout, Mike CF 4 0 3 2 .355 2B (5), SB (7);

- Heard discussion that Trout could play 2B around draft day, guess Angels see differently.

TOR AAA Snider, Travis LF 3 3 1 3 .293 HR (9)
- Absolutely on fire right now. 9 HR and 1.002 OPS. Don’t bury the 21 year old yet :)

BOS AAA Tazawa, Junichi 5.1 4 2 2 1 3 2.38 L (0-2)
- Tazawa > Bowden…agree? disagree?

MIN AA Gutierrez, Carlos 3 1 0 0 1 5 6.65
- been getting shelled in AA, but starting to string together a few good innings.

NYY SS Vizcaino, Arodys 5 2 0 0 2 6 2.16 W (2-4)
- discussed earlier, but impressive showing for 18 year old. Anyone see him live this year?

Gisbson

He flips back and forth, not sure who else is there but they seem to be splitting time between 2 guys. I haven’t been curious enough to see who is taking time away from him at SS.

by jfish26101 on Aug 3, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Reddick

Is actually a good defensive CFer. At least twice the athlete Trot ever was.

I really love this kid and I dont think Im alone. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised by how highly he’s rated by the experts next season. He’s flying up prospect lists.

by alskor on Aug 3, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

beckham

Maybe never? Ramirez seems to have settled in at shortstop and Getz, while not great, is passable and cheap.

Beckham’s glove plays nicely at 3B and obviously it hasn’t hurt his offense one bit, which takes the pressure off the need to move him.

You are right about one thing, though. Gordon Beckham has a special, special bat.

by mrkupe on Aug 3, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

ARam at SS

has he really settled in nicely? I haven’t watched him many games, but from what little I’ve seen, and from what I’ve read, there seems to be some question about his ability to stick there long-term. Maybe you’ve seen him more, have the reports on his ability changed?

Agree on Getz, I think he’s passable while cost controlled. 17SB:1CS, really hitting well over the last month.

Longterm, I still think they need to give Fields a shot at 3B, tell him he’s getting 550AB’s and let him relax. That obviously would mean Beckham moves to SS and Ramirez moves to CF. That bat at SS is All-Star caliber.

I dont see what's to like about Getz

I dont mind giving Fields a chance, still kind of a fan, but I would definitely shift Beckham to 2B and make Getz the utility player he really is.

by alskor on Aug 3, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

sox stuff

I talked about Fields below. Basically he’s bad at most everything except crushing left-handed pitching.

Getz really isn’t that bad. His bat is definitely fringe but he’s fast and (at least to my eye) plays good defense. That’s not a guy you spend a lot of money on, but if you’re paying him the minimum salary, he’s an okay stopgap.

by mrkupe on Aug 4, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

personally

I think Beckham’s bat will end up being AS caliber no matter where he plays . . .he’s not just a good hitter, he’s a very mature one for his age.

Yeah, there are significant questions about Alexi . . .but he does have the physical tools to stick there. I think he’d be best suited in CF, but it looks like one of those “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” sort of deals . . .Ramirez is doing great after a horrid start, and obviously Beckham is doing fine.

I don’t see Josh Fields getting another shot. If he played every day and settled in he’d be a useful option against lefty pitchers, but he doesn’t have the bat speed to catch up to even average fastballs from the right side. And his defense at 3B has improved slightly over the last couple of years but is still well below-average. His upside is Eduardo Perez.

by mrkupe on Aug 4, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

That’ll happen right after the Indians trade Marte for Beckham.

Your name should be "whooooooosh"

The Mariners traded Asdrubal Cabrera to the Indians for Eduardo Perez.

by PissedMick on Aug 4, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe its just me

but I see near stardom in Asdrubal’s future. That kid is something special. High average hitter, patient hitter, great approach, very good defense coming(not there yet, but great tools), bit of speed and power. 23 years old and already played ~three MLB seasons.

Its still early, yes, but I could easily see us looking up in 7 years and finding out he’s been one of the better shortstops in baseball.

he's become a fixture at the top

of their lineup and at SS. Kind of player I wish the Twins had

Thanks for this update. It will be interesting to see how he responds. After coming back from injury, he was on fire, but has really cooled off of late.
